he was always conflicted iirc cuz he had a lovebone for daenerys

he is/was working for varys iirc. as far as the show goes, he has not been rumbled and i don't recall him officially renouncing anything.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:56 (ten years ago) link

ya but this is tywin the master schemer, its like his raison d'etre to squelch any possible threats to his house, i bet he's not taking this lightly

yeah i guess he is always hanging around that dragon burned castle

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:57 (ten years ago) link

tywin is kind of the avatar of cynicism - mundane power and materialism. i think he would at least resist the notion of the return of magic, maybe be in denial if up close to it.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:58 (ten years ago) link

also i think her survivng the bonfire is supposed to be like a one-time miracle and not necessarily a sustained superpower

also in the book it singed all her hair off

this isnt the book man... its the show

Are Robb and his bannermen really at war, or does he just hang out in tents a lot.

polyphonic, Monday, 13 May 2013 19:44 (ten years ago) link

the fighting has been *in-tents*!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 13 May 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

They've had some downtime reserved for sex that can't wait until Mom completely leaves the tent and war planning/note writing that can't wait until underwear is first put back on.

The Targaryans can tolerate a bit more heat than most ordinary people, they like really hot baths and things like that, but that doesn't mean they're totally immune to fire, no.

idgi one week John snow and his wilding gf are pledging loyalty to no one but each other and the next she's all amped to attack the wall, shouldn't they be planning their escape abt now

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

Maybe ultimately loyal to only each other?

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

idk

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I interpreted that arrangement as them going along with the plan as it stands, but Jon has Ygritte's back if shit gets real with whoever they're about to start fighting irrespective of his true status as a Crow (no Watch left though really so I dunno), and in turn Ygritte has Jon's back irrespective of his status as a Crow as and when Gareth from The Office goes postal on him in an attempt to win Ygritte's love and/or the other Wildlings find out what Jon's really all about.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link

sure but why not just take off instead of risking death you know

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

as far as the show goes, he has not been rumbled and i don't recall him officially renouncing anything.

iirc there was a bit in season 2 (when Dany'd lost her dragons) when the mysterious woman in the gold full-face mask thing calls him out & asks if he'll betray Dany again and he says he won't.

but he's not been rumbled by Dany.

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Monday, 13 May 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link

this was a fairly boring episode imo - the whole let's go back to harrenhall thing is just like "yeesh okay."

... (LocalGarda), Monday, 13 May 2013 23:21 (ten years ago) link

xxpost - I spose because Ygritte is way too committed to the Wildling cause to sack it off so quickly.

Likewise Jon probably is gonna pull a fast one and do something to undermine this whole project as a result of his devotion to the Watch - or the idea of the Watch, anyway. Gotta remember that for all that Catelyn Stark was a dick to him, Jon seems to have gotten on well with Ned and clearly loved Robb and Arya and he obviously regards himself as a Stark of Winterfell to some degree. And it's the Starks who've always supported the Watch, manned the Wall, Uncle Benjen as head Ranger and so on - Jon's probably been brought up to believe that the Watch are fundamentally good guys doing a vital job for the realm.

And each one (strongly) suspects these things about the other, but they're in the first flush of passionate love. So what are they to do? Desperately in love but both with a fundamental awareness that this is all doomed because of the other's core identity, wanting really badly to just run off together but being too committed to their respective causes to actually do it? And each able to recognise that fact in the other?

Idk, that might be it. Basically this storyline is heading for major fucking tragedy, whatever else happens

Windsor Davies, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:25 (ten years ago) link

Basically this storyline is heading for major fucking tragedy, whatever else happens

that's sort of the way this whole series works tho

Clay, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:38 (ten years ago) link

Well yeah ok so it was kind of a redundant thing to say. But this story feels more poignant to me than Sansa having to marry Tyrion or Alfie Allen getting his cock chopped off by a psychopath or whatever.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:42 (ten years ago) link

Speaking of, that lowers the likelihood of a male cast heh heh member showing more than body double butt, whereas every female regular between 18 and 40 has gotten her kit off.

Alfie Allen showed full frontal in Series 1!

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 10:51 (ten years ago) link

that's the point

Oh, duh - (sorry)

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:45 (ten years ago) link

omg torturing alfie allen was even more boring and stupid than it was last week

kingslayer and brienne thing is cute tho. sweet block and left cross from the bear too, should really have taken his head off to reveal nic cage afterwards

i already forgot what melisandre wants the bastard smith kid's blood for can someone remind me

r|t|c, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:49 (ten years ago) link

also i keep thinking robb's gruff honourable bannerdude is being played by russ abbot, it's very distracting

r|t|c, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:53 (ten years ago) link

I don't think it's been properly explained? Just that royal blood possesses power etc

Number None, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:53 (ten years ago) link

The blood of kings has powerful magic. Don't believe they've been more specific than that yet.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:54 (ten years ago) link

i like the torture scenes myself. just sort of cheap lolz at theon.

i already forgot what melisandre wants the bastard smith kid's blood for can someone remind me

isn't it to make another evil ghost thing? stannis asked her and she said he was too weak. presumably it used his blood time. doesn't sound like great things are in store for the poor lad.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:55 (ten years ago) link

presumably it used his blood *the previous time i meant to say.

i think this was quite clearly discussed.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:56 (ten years ago) link

oh yes that rings a bell. did they say who exactly he wanted to assassinate with it, seems like there's a fair few contenders at the mo

r|t|c, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:31 (ten years ago) link

he just wants a new friend i think.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:42 (ten years ago) link

Wait so if Theon isn't even in the third book are they just going to keep the character popping up in pointless scenes for two seasons just so Alfie Allen has something to do?

The scene with the bear was awesome.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:46 (ten years ago) link

There's going to be an awful lot of that coming up once we're beyond the third book in storyline terms. Feast For Crows and Dance With Dragons each deals with half the cast, with the stories running broadly in parallel. Be much easier in the tv show to just run it as a single continuous story.

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:51 (ten years ago) link

There's been a lot of press around someone at HBO saying they see the show as running for 7 seasons. So Season 4 will be the second half of book 3, right?

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

xp presumably the events of those books are happening at the same time at each other, then? It would be more confusing to show them one at a time, so.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:39 (ten years ago) link

well they're already integrating books 3, 4 and 5 to an extent and they'll continue to run 4 and 5 parallel as windsor says. book 3 material shouldn't stretch past the 3rd or 4th episode of season 4 at the outside.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

i kept thinking of the bear fight from Anchorman and couldn't take the scene too seriously!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 14:59 (ten years ago) link

I thought Melisandre wanted a king babby? ie I thought part of her plan was to bone down with Gendry. Or am I imagining that?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

could be projecting a little...

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:07 (ten years ago) link

was the smoke monster a king babby? didn't stannis express some wife-related qualms around the time of its inception?

✌_✌ (c sharp major), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:09 (ten years ago) link

Wait so if Theon isn't even in the third book are they just going to keep the character popping up in pointless scenes for two seasons just so Alfie Allen has something to do?

apparently, yes. we're at the point in the story now where the books start dropping various character arcs for long chunks of time before resuming them and i guess they want to give all the main characters consistent screen time still despite this

ciderpress, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link

yes it would not really work to drop major characters for seasons at a time tbh

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:13 (ten years ago) link

i wonder how true that is. i guess they didn't want to be the ones to find out. but there is some much else going on besides.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:14 (ten years ago) link

if u tell an actor he's not going to work for two seasons or whatever then good luck getting him back when you need him

but also i can't imagine the audience would go for that

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

didn't work too well in the books iirc so why not take the lesson.
