oh yes that rings a bell. did they say who exactly he wanted to assassinate with it, seems like there's a fair few contenders at the mo

he just wants a new friend i think.

Wait so if Theon isn't even in the third book are they just going to keep the character popping up in pointless scenes for two seasons just so Alfie Allen has something to do?

The scene with the bear was awesome.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:46 (ten years ago) link

There's going to be an awful lot of that coming up once we're beyond the third book in storyline terms. Feast For Crows and Dance With Dragons each deals with half the cast, with the stories running broadly in parallel. Be much easier in the tv show to just run it as a single continuous story.

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 12:51 (ten years ago) link

There's been a lot of press around someone at HBO saying they see the show as running for 7 seasons. So Season 4 will be the second half of book 3, right?

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

xp presumably the events of those books are happening at the same time at each other, then? It would be more confusing to show them one at a time, so.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:39 (ten years ago) link

well they're already integrating books 3, 4 and 5 to an extent and they'll continue to run 4 and 5 parallel as windsor says. book 3 material shouldn't stretch past the 3rd or 4th episode of season 4 at the outside.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

i kept thinking of the bear fight from Anchorman and couldn't take the scene too seriously!

I thought Melisandre wanted a king babby? ie I thought part of her plan was to bone down with Gendry. Or am I imagining that?

was the smoke monster a king babby? didn't stannis express some wife-related qualms around the time of its inception?

apparently, yes. we're at the point in the story now where the books start dropping various character arcs for long chunks of time before resuming them and i guess they want to give all the main characters consistent screen time still despite this

ciderpress, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link

yes it would not really work to drop major characters for seasons at a time tbh

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:13 (ten years ago) link

i wonder how true that is. i guess they didn't want to be the ones to find out. but there is some much else going on besides.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:14 (ten years ago) link

if u tell an actor he's not going to work for two seasons or whatever then good luck getting him back when you need him

but also i can't imagine the audience would go for that

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:20 (ten years ago) link

didn't work too well in the books iirc so why not take the lesson.

inste grammophon (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:23 (ten years ago) link

Other shows (ie Lost) have managed to get away with dropping characters and then bringing them back but I'd imagine it's contractually A LOT more straightforward this way, especially with in-demand actors.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link

Alfie Allen is in demand?

Kind of hope that just to make things completely unsubtle, ie par for the course, the torturer is going to hang Theon's Willy around his neck, would be a quaint visual parallel to Jaime's hand.

Gregor Sansa (Leee), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 15:32 (ten years ago) link

maybe they could graft Theon's willy onto Jaime's stump

pretty sure that if a bear smacks you in the nek, it doesn't leave shallow cuts. it just sorta knocks your head off.

Note to self: when talking to someone who has not seen the latest got ep and they say "how was it", don't do that thing where you FAKE OUT SPOILER by saying "oh yeah, i couldn't believe X died" because maybe they read the books and will reply, totally honestly "yeah, that was a shock to me when i read it" and now you have self spoilered and no one is going to be sympathetic about this ever

Matt DC, Monday, 20 May 2013 21:57 (ten years ago) link

lol

I agree actually, Dinklage got the tone pitch-perfect - death-inducing levels of shame and mortification, tempered by the only emotion stronger, viz. an all-consuming hatred of his family for putting him through this (and everything else), all wrapped up in a lovely blanket of being a bit too drunk. Great acting
