Twitter going nuts that one of the SNL songs is basically Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People"

well this song sucks

whatever that was >>>>>>>>>>>> "new slaves" imo

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:14 (ten years ago) link

also i'm betting that's what Daft Punk worked on:

Details surrounding his recording sessions remain scarce, but he has been in the studio with Daft Punk, who programmed drums for the album. “It was very raw: he was rapping—kind of screaming primally, actually,” Thomas Bangalter of the French duo told Rolling Stone.

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:14 (ten years ago) link

i think this song will sound good in a higher quality recording, especially from 2:40 on. the lip syncing was hilarious and i'm loving the zordon vibes.

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:17 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah i was talking about "new slaves"

oh is that a new song at the end? i thought it was a coda.

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:21 (ten years ago) link

the cut's so abrupt that i think it's a different song. a really terrible kanye falsetto song.

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:21 (ten years ago) link

can't tell if i'm really this or if it was irredeemably corn

"new slaves" the jam tho

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:30 (ten years ago) link

good lord i should re-read my posts after i've been drinking

can't tell if i'm really into this or if it was irredeemably corny

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:31 (ten years ago) link

It is very direct and he sounds very excited or worked up. Both of those things are good I think.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:36 (ten years ago) link

if this does actually sample marilyn manson i'm going with "corniest thing ever"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:36 (ten years ago) link

third listen, i'm digging this. i like kanye when he is in full-on self-serious, bordering on corny mode. i like MBDTF a great deal.

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:41 (ten years ago) link

fucking hell

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:42 (ten years ago) link

listening to it on headphones, yeah "Black Skinhead" is cool and totally destroys "New Slaves," which is barely even a song, sounds like an album intro or something.

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:49 (ten years ago) link

it's just a short rap song over a minimal beat, i like it a lot

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:51 (ten years ago) link

then again i have yet to listen to a recording of a tv performance on headphones

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:52 (ten years ago) link

my one gripe with "new slaves" is it has that crescendoing coda that sounds a lot like "clique"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:53 (ten years ago) link

it just feels like some poorly rapped provocative (tm will ferrell) nonsense to me though

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:53 (ten years ago) link

lol all i meant was i couldn't really make out the words to "Black Skinhead" at all when i watched it on TV but on headphones it came through much clearer and i was like yeah this is good

yeeznuts (some dude), Sunday, 19 May 2013 04:54 (ten years ago) link

I love that he got the line "I came on her Hampton blouse and in her Hampton mouth" on live tv. Censor asleep on the job.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 19 May 2013 05:07 (ten years ago) link

He seems angry - good. Very stark. Tony Stark. Sorry. I like this direction - opposite of the gross opulence previously.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 May 2013 06:26 (ten years ago) link

The "swallower" line ruins "New Slaves" for me.

Simon H., Sunday, 19 May 2013 06:35 (ten years ago) link

Why?

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 May 2013 06:38 (ten years ago) link

I really like all of this. I didn't care for Grad/808, detested the last one and only half remember the Jay/labelmates ones so I'm excited to be back on the kanye train after like a decade of being blazay about his stuff.

tell me more (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 19 May 2013 06:39 (ten years ago) link

"It was very raw: he was rapping—kind of screaming primally, actually,” Thomas Bangalter of the French duo told Rolling Stone.

So this is his Plastic Ono Band. Awesome.

Cunga, Sunday, 19 May 2013 07:55 (ten years ago) link

both songs are straight furnace (hi hoos!) except for that lame coda at end of new slaves

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:34 (ten years ago) link

i'm really impressed that he was able to play this in 66 places across the world w/o a high quality rip or something leaking, good job kanye stree team

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:36 (ten years ago) link

"i keep it three hunna like the romans" lol

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:38 (ten years ago) link

judging from these two songs this album is gonna blow MBDTF out the water, im hyped

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:42 (ten years ago) link

dying @ 'the beautiful people' comparison, that's great

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:44 (ten years ago) link

I'm implausibly excited by this

WAY TO BE LATE K3V

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 12:55 (ten years ago) link

haha i swear i was gonna make fun of that line first but my wifi crapped out

I love the Kanye vicious cycle. Get rich, write angry, asshole songs about people who think he is an asshole, get angry again, write another song about the response to people who think he's a dick, etc. Kanye smash. Meanwhile, most people dont give a fuck. Who are his enemies? Does he have enemies? Is he just paranoid for the the sake of the craft? Is he still into fashion? Is he still doing fan interviews over skype from exotic locations?

Where did all this anger come from? He was pretty chill, funny, fun, thoughtful, then he does 808s, then he comes back with a concept album about being an angry asshole. Did the death of his mom, grounding element, break him?

not having to answer to mom, especially after breaking up with his long term girlfriend, undoubtedly set him free to paint an uglier picture

da croupier, Sunday, 19 May 2013 13:50 (ten years ago) link

idgi what the big mystery is, he's an unmoored stardom coke fiend on a provocation treadmill and his artistic rage is always chiefly directed at the prospect of the dying of his own light

we are all his mom now

help computer (sleepingbag), Saturday, 15 August 2015 21:05 (eight years ago) link

enough strong elements are immediately there in "blood" for it to be pretty powerful despite the wack lyrics but yea it was a missed opportunity for something that could've been way better

i agree w/this, musically it's super epic but the lyrics make me feel a little dumb for getting swept up in it.

still listening to Yeezus frequently btw.

lil urbane (Jordan), Saturday, 15 August 2015 21:41 (eight years ago) link

My bold opinion is that Late Registration aged better already.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 21 August 2015 04:38 (eight years ago) link

still haven't been able to get through this album a second time.

Spottie, Friday, 21 August 2015 06:25 (eight years ago) link

album has lost its 'WTF is this' shock factor since it came out, but its still good, its just marred by a lot of the lyrics, that havent aged too well (already), and the fact that it doesnt seem to hang too well together overall. but its bound to be better than the new one.

StillAdvance, Friday, 21 August 2015 16:18 (eight years ago) link

Blood on the Leaves is about drug paranoia to me. I don't know if it was intended as such, but it works that way to me.

Frederik B, Friday, 21 August 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

I nearly had a heart attack the first time I heard this record. Love it to pieces; those first 4 tracks rock hard — my first time listening to the opener when I suddenly heard where the 1 was and how the verse was leaning into the groove was magical.

To me BotL seems to be about the toll of meaningless sex; subversively using "black bodies" and "strange fruit" to mean naked people getting it on. I could be projecting.

glad that this one's so good because i've long since accepted that whenever swish/so help me god/whatever the fuck he's calling it this week comes out, it won't be good at all

its bound to be better than the new one.

I dunno, his new one's pretty good:

The outro to “I am a God,” when he follows up a bunch of blasphemous boasts — “i know he’s the most high, but i am a close high” — with panicked panting and screaming. Suchg a strange record.

If you wanted to be turned off by Kanye West there was ample material on Yeezus, but it also had an undeniable, transferable energy, a crackling and palpable electricity.

just put this on for the first time in ages and yeah this is such a succinct description of why it's great

devvvine, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 00:06 (five years ago) link

Agreed, that line stood out to me in Jordan's review.

three years pass...

I was listening to an interview with a drummer who does sample replays for a living, and learned that the gospel sample on 'On Sight' was actually an entire replay. Days before the album dropped, they had to hire another producer/engineer to get a drummer and a gospel choir to precisely re-record the sample (which presumably couldn't be cleared). Crazy.

I.e. it's not actually this record --
