I clicked the link but to suggest that people don't care about the characters because they didn't read the books is pretty fucking stupid.

yeah, you're misreading me.
i'm suggesting that if your commitment to the teevee show is such that the death of a major character affected you more than both your children's births, it is an odd thing that you have somehow not gotten around to reading the source material
or more to the point, lol internet and geek fandom and everything but casually threatening an author with a stabbing because he killed off your fave character is nagl

no doubt that the general geeky violent reaction is dumb as hell, but to link that to "not reading the books" is still pretty fucking stupid.

Gukbe, Monday, 3 June 2013 07:10 (ten years ago) link

i dunno, it's always odd to me when people bond with episodic television show characters to the point when they are wrecked when characters die? Especially on shows where the deaths of major characters is part of the NASCAR like attraction? And especially especially when it's been an open secret for like thirteen years?

wow it's almost as if people on the internet use hyperbole as an affect

J0rdan S., Monday, 3 June 2013 07:12 (ten years ago) link

i think the wrecked part comes largely from the fact that the starks have been presented as the more narratively traditional "good guys" in a show that is generally bereft of them, and that sort of centering group of characters has just largely been decimated in the most brutal fashion imaginable.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 3 June 2013 07:14 (ten years ago) link

like the zero hope, nightmarish fate that is usually reserved for peripheral gray hat characters.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 3 June 2013 07:15 (ten years ago) link

sure; that's a good part of what makes the show interesting and has been present since episode one when the incest twins pushed a kid out of a building

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 June 2013 07:16 (ten years ago) link

any form, whether it be tv or film or literature, has the power to create emotional investments. True, GoT does seemingly pride itself on the destruction of main characters, though it's not alone amongst television shows to do so. You say it's an open secret, but some (including me) managed to avoid that spoiler for the last four years. I made a conscious choice to not read the books after i was a hundred or so pages into the first one because I saw the ep where Ned died and thought, "I think I'd enjoy having this as a TV series to look forward to for a number of weeks every year rather than a book".

Go ahead and make fun of the absurd reactions of some of the fans on the internet, but don't condescend because they didn't read the books and thus couldn't "really care". Books and TV are different media, and they allow for different experiences.

Gukbe, Monday, 3 June 2013 07:16 (ten years ago) link

xp and i suppose hyperbole beats jaded irony as an affect but I'll take vanilla all the same

guk, honestly, i quit reading the books after the first one for exactly the same reasons and i am not on some turn up my nose at people who can't read hrumph hrumph shit here; touchy crowd tonight

lol at people who have DEEP EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS with this show but haven't taken the time to read the books

J0rdan S., Monday, 3 June 2013 07:21 (ten years ago) link

I don't think it's being touchy to suggest that you're being condescending in the wrong ways. By all means, mock those who are being ridiculous about it, but for goodness' sake mock them in the right way. We have to have standards, after all.

Gukbe, Monday, 3 June 2013 07:22 (ten years ago) link

catelyn's helpless throat-slitting of walder frey's wife was an A+ moment. this show, man.

but i could see where that might be difficult to twig if you're hung up on picking a fight.

not in the least bit interested in picking a fight. just wanting to point out when someone is being a prick in the hopes they'll correct their behaviour.

from the huffpo interview with Michelle Fairley here: http://www.huffpost.com/us/entry/3375895/

Max Read of Gawker wrote an obsessive article about the accents on the show. Did you guys discuss who gets what accents?

Yes, absolutely. Ned was the head of the family and that was Sean Bean, and Sean’s accent is a Sheffield accent. It’s northern. Therefore, the older children were to speak the way Robb speaks, with a northern accent. But Catelyn is originally from the south, so she wouldn’t have a northern accent. And the children are educated. Some of the kids have northern accents, and Jon Snow has a northern accent. It was discussed individually with each actor about what they were expected to be.

Clay, Monday, 3 June 2013 08:55 (ten years ago) link

well I dicked the URL up but whatever

Clay, Monday, 3 June 2013 08:55 (ten years ago) link

whoops, a bit more.

So Arya and Sansa have educated accents because they're younger?
Yeah.

And what is Dinklage doing?
Peter? Peter’s doing English.

Just a stage English, Shakespearean English?
Yeah.

I wondered how they would make that scene as horrifying and chaotic as it is in the book (they didn't really but the stabbing of a pregnant woman fairly distressing).

I loved Walder Frey in this, but I kind of wanted him to deliver a George Bluth style "And that's why you should always keep your promises."

i will agree that people's reactions to this have been hilariously OTT. this also includes some book readers that KNEW THIS WAS COMING!!!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 3 June 2013 13:47 (ten years ago) link

I thought it was very well done. (Obligatory but-as-a-reader caveats*: I wish they had done more to recreate the sense of building dread in that chapter, especially with the drums, and of course the show couldn't convey the sheer heartbreak of "No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair".) But Robb's final, pleading, "Mother" was great and Michelle Fairley was simply brilliant throughout. After she sees Robb dies she is just gone. Honestly, I was a lot more saddened than I thought I'd be.

Bran and Rickon's goodbye was very affecting as well.

*I also meant to add, Roose killing Robb was a bit quick for me, thought it was more than made up for by the look he gives Cat when she sees he's wearing mail.
