i go to a brewery that has a "taproom" that only serves their own beer, has a three drink maximum, closes at 9pm, does not accept cash, and does not accept tips.

you can however, have a "beer for the bartender" put on your tab as a gesture of gratitude (which i assume just funnels revenue in to an "employees drink for free" sub-account).

Is that around here?

Jeff, Friday, 14 June 2013 14:02 (ten years ago) link

naperville

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Friday, 14 June 2013 14:05 (ten years ago) link

That would have been my guess.

Jeff, Friday, 14 June 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link

is there also a little paragraph on the fancy card they presumably have somewhere that tells you how this setup works, or does the bartender earn the gratitude mostly by explaining to people how to tip the bartender

j., Friday, 14 June 2013 14:42 (ten years ago) link

there's a paragraph on their website about it and a brief note printed on the bottom of their beer list

The restaurant worker justice org that I used to work with says:

just talked to them. They claim to pay workers $20 + / hour. Now we just need to verify that with some actual workers.

i went to this place where you stood around in a line, cafeteria style - kind of like chipotle. the difference was, they had a server who would come up to you before you ordered and asked if you wanted to stay or take out. if you wanted to stay, she'd tried to coordinate it so that there would be an empty table by the time you got to the end. when it came time to pay, i paid by credit card and on the receipt there was space for a tip. everybody had been very cordial. i became confused, and didn't tip anything, but now i am thinking maybe i should have. it was an unpleasant experience. in conclusion, i would never yelp there again.

乒乓, Thursday, 20 June 2013 16:55 (ten years ago) link

When did you pay? On your way out, after you finished eating?

If that's the case, 10 percent for the hostess and tea lady, if this place was cafeteria style.

I once forgot to tip at a restaurant. I drove 10 miles back to the restaurant, and gave the dude his tip along with an apology. He looked at me like I was insane. It was probably the worst I've ever felt.

Sufjan Grafton, Thursday, 20 June 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link

you paid after you got your food but before you sat down, like chipotle xp

乒乓, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

Never been to chipotle.

If they're making you pay before you leave, asking for a tip while you're still standing over your tray of food, I'd say fuckit. Throw a dollar or two on the table when you're done.

pplains, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

yeah... a lot of places by virtue of being a restaurant will have the tip section on the credit card receipt, even if you're just getting takeout or w/e. it's terrifying

乒乓, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

Do I have to tip in Belgium?

Jeff, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

in Austin right now, there are a bunch of trendy restaurants that are set up so you wait in a long, slow moving line to get up to a counter where you place your order. Oftentimes, you will be served drinks as you wait in line. In some cases you get your food when you order and in others it is brought to you. Either way, it is a somewhat less service-intensive model than a regular restaurant, but I think they still expect you to tip as if they were identical.

As far as I can tell, the whole purpose of this is to reduce the space of the restaurant and make it look like it is extremely popular because there is always a big line. Suffice it to say, I have mixed feelings about this model.

Moodles, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

Those places where you have to take back some plastic flag with a number or a postcard of Jane Russell inside an acrylic stand back to your table are low on my list. You're caught in this purgatory zone of having officially become a customer without any of the benefits. I mean, places get slammed sometimes and that's necessary, but as part of the regular routine, it sucks.

Like at fast food drive-thru places where they take your money, give you a Coke and then tell you to pull up a little bit and someone will come out with your order. I had that purgatory last me 20 minutes once. I can't pull away since I already paid. I can go inside and wait or complain, but that defeats the whole point of a drive-thru.

pplains, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:19 (ten years ago) link

Jeff: at a restaurant add 10% or so, though it's not really compulsory. At a bar: no. I round up a cab fare and add a euro, generally.
