boring little 1 on 1s are also a finale tradition and they're always my favorite, esp when they're reflecting/navel-gazey/not directly talking about the big storylines/sort of how real people talk

Yeah but with them all one after another it deflated the (potential) momentum I'd been hoping for in the finale. Though I'm aware we all needed a rest after the red wedding arguably... except I was looking for a little more resulting chaos.

tbh i'm cool with the second to last episode containing the climax and the last episode acting as an actual come-down conclusion, everyone's just used to the jj abrams "finale has to be super exciting and end on a major cliffhanger" method

Was there talk upthread about another fantasy series by a contemporary writer that is as rad and HAM as ASOIAF and doesn't have the same racial and gender baggage that GRRM carries?

Lynyrd Cohen (Leee), Wednesday, 19 June 2013 01:25 (ten years ago) link

what's HAM?

So I've seen most of this, and I don't like it. I don't know why. No complaints about the photography/technical side of it. Why don't I like GoT, anyone?

I think part of it is the cumulative effect of lots of almost-actual-names. It's a pedantic annoyance. The thing is, I could ignore the silly names if it wasn't also aiming for (and a lot of the time getting) a certain level of realism.

Relatedly, it's medieval europe without the Christianity. It takes away the element of scheming royalty who pretend to be acting for a greater good, or anyone who actually considers themselves to be acting for a greater good. There's no Gregory of Tours writing his histories in the middle of all the violence. Decaffeinated medievalism. But then who wants to watch Kingdom of God.

I like the dirt and sweat on character's faces. Landscapes, costumes, that's all good. And this isn't me being flippant, these things are important in creating a world. In a similar way I liked this element of Mad Men.

I like the eunuch bits and the dwarf bits and the bits with them together.

cardamon, Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:28 (ten years ago) link

the eunuch doesn't have any bits iirc

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:34 (ten years ago) link

The thing that bugs me a bit about the show, having no idea where it is going, is the pointlessness of all this fighting and scheming in a world with armies of snow zombies, dragons and women birthing smoke demons. Prioritize, you inbred morons! That's why I liked the end of the last episode. Red Witch was all fuck this game of thrones shit, there is an approaching army of snow of zombies!

Speaking of which, what happened to the army of snow zombies? Did it get lost?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:46 (ten years ago) link

lol i sort of get the name thing

isn't ASOIAF supposed to be one of those "they're all speaking a different language, you're just reading it in english" books? whenever i read some alternate universe story where the names are just slightly different, it seems to imply some sort of evolutionary determinism, like "in every iteration of earth, language will evolve similarly and with a degree of direction, but not quite exactly". which is bunk, and a cool excuse to not create silly names and instead create silly deviations from names we're used to, i guess bc it's between "robb" and "gakzorn". but if we're reading a hypothetically-translated language, why not just translate the names to common english spellings as you would with "dragon" or "sword" or "tree", or i dunno be annoying about it and spell it "dragyn" instead. idk. it is corny and obnoxious to see "robb" and "CATelyn", though there aren't too many other examples from GRRM

also of course the main language we spend the most time with is always perfectly translated into english and the foreign languages across the river into dothraki land aren't based on any real languages, just your standard "savagey gibber-gabber" etc

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:47 (ten years ago) link

nb i might be thinking of LOTR with this stuff

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:47 (ten years ago) link

Actually, they speak English, complete with Latin alphabet.

Lynyrd Cohen (Leee), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:52 (ten years ago) link

oh lol

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:52 (ten years ago) link

Sorry, they don't speak using the Latin alphabet, of course! They wrote in it.

Lynyrd Cohen (Leee), Thursday, 20 June 2013 01:55 (ten years ago) link

Ah yeah, that's another thing, I wish there weren't dragons in it. Sorry if that's missing the point. Ice-demons and smoke-demons, fine, I liked them.

cardamon, Thursday, 20 June 2013 02:05 (ten years ago) link

dragons p cool in general tbh

the REAL Dr Morbius (silby), Thursday, 20 June 2013 04:47 (ten years ago) link

"Relatedly, it's medieval europe without the Christianity. It takes away the element of scheming royalty who pretend to be acting for a greater good, or anyone who actually considers themselves to be acting for a greater good. "

Dunno if I agree with this tbh, I think there are a number of characters and organisations who seem broadly interested in representing the interests of the people or "the greater good" or whatever. Most notably at this point Varys (tho tbf who the fuck knows) and the Brotherhood Without Banners, whose raison d'etre is to protect the 'smallfolk' from the schemers and the monsters and so on

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:52 (ten years ago) link

I think GRRM does have a problem understanding religion - the way that the religion of the seven fits with the state and daily life and economic power is v thin and unrealised (and none of the variants he presents in any of the books make it any less so).

the dragons are sadly inextricable from the entire thing.
