I once forgot to tip at a restaurant. I drove 10 miles back to the restaurant, and gave the dude his tip along with an apology. He looked at me like I was insane. It was probably the worst I've ever felt.

you paid after you got your food but before you sat down, like chipotle xp

乒乓, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

Never been to chipotle.

If they're making you pay before you leave, asking for a tip while you're still standing over your tray of food, I'd say fuckit. Throw a dollar or two on the table when you're done.

yeah... a lot of places by virtue of being a restaurant will have the tip section on the credit card receipt, even if you're just getting takeout or w/e. it's terrifying

Do I have to tip in Belgium?

Jeff, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

in Austin right now, there are a bunch of trendy restaurants that are set up so you wait in a long, slow moving line to get up to a counter where you place your order. Oftentimes, you will be served drinks as you wait in line. In some cases you get your food when you order and in others it is brought to you. Either way, it is a somewhat less service-intensive model than a regular restaurant, but I think they still expect you to tip as if they were identical.

As far as I can tell, the whole purpose of this is to reduce the space of the restaurant and make it look like it is extremely popular because there is always a big line. Suffice it to say, I have mixed feelings about this model.

Moodles, Thursday, 20 June 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

Those places where you have to take back some plastic flag with a number or a postcard of Jane Russell inside an acrylic stand back to your table are low on my list. You're caught in this purgatory zone of having officially become a customer without any of the benefits. I mean, places get slammed sometimes and that's necessary, but as part of the regular routine, it sucks.

Like at fast food drive-thru places where they take your money, give you a Coke and then tell you to pull up a little bit and someone will come out with your order. I had that purgatory last me 20 minutes once. I can't pull away since I already paid. I can go inside and wait or complain, but that defeats the whole point of a drive-thru.

Jeff: at a restaurant add 10% or so, though it's not really compulsory. At a bar: no. I round up a cab fare and add a euro, generally.

in a lot of restaurants you're supposed to tip for takeout tho

(i'm guessing this has already been discussed itt a million times)

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 June 2013 18:50 (ten years ago) link

the thing that gets me is when i'm using a card for my $6 sandwich at a pit beef stand, just an easy walk-up-and-order deal, and there's a tip line on the receipt and they just stare at me until i sign the receipt and give it back. i always end up not writing anything but then i empty the change in my pockets into the tip jar and hope they hear it

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Thursday, 20 June 2013 18:54 (ten years ago) link

tip for takeout, really?

乒乓, Thursday, 20 June 2013 19:32 (ten years ago) link

in places where you'd tip a waiter, yeah, just not as much as you'd tip a waiter

See I'm always torn on that. I always want to give something if it's a sit down restaurant, because I know they're probably tipping out on it, but since I drove up there to get it, wasn't waited on, and this wasn't a delivery, I feel like 10% is usually enough (whereas I give 20% when sat at a sit down restaurant, hell even at places like Golden Corral).

but yeah, a place like Chipotle, fuck that.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

But the majority is in the wrong. You should tip Amazon.com, because filling your order takes work. Someone has to take your order over the internet, and that order could be different items from opposite sides of the warehouse — in other words, complicated. Or worse, it could be vague. Many times orders are returned because the customer ordered the wrong thing.

pplains, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:36 (ten years ago) link

If Starbucks baristas didn't make five times what a Waffle House waitress makes, I'd consider it.

tipping on take out? fuck that. the sushi restaurant across the street from me AUTOMATICALLY adds a 10% tip to your bill for take out. we haven't been back.

I agree with some of the conclusions that author makes, but not how they arrived at them. Otherwise, why didn't I get tipped at fucking Arby's?

Neanderthal, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:38 (ten years ago) link

those sandwiches were hard to make. and I worked there when they required us to open and clean the slicer. I literally got wounds and grease burns FOR YOUR FUCKING BEEF 'N CHEDDARS. had you all tipped me maybe I wouldn't have had to keep stealing food while on the job

I'm going to start wearing shades into restaurants so that I can tip them at servers and say "there you go" on the way out the door

DJP, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

I am pro-tipping waitstaff btw as opposed to giving them 'livable wages', cuz I think they do better in the tip scenario. One of the advantages of the industry is that if you get into some financial trouble and need money quick, if you work for a good and busy restaurant, it's fairly easy to get some immediate cash, and pick up shifts to make extra (rather than having to wait for that paycheck to hit, which will be the same amount check to check).

Neanderthal, Thursday, 20 June 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link

We have talked about tipping on takeout before and it is the right thing to do if it is a place that is primarily a sit-down place. The person who prepared your take-out order didn't just "do work," she did work that she ordinarily gets tipped for, and preparing your take-out took time away from them giving the best possible service to these tables. In an aggregate way it is eating into their tips. When you are running around in the kitchen and have like eight things you should be doing to get your tables served and then you have to get a fucking to-go order together, it takes some kind of pride in your job to say "okay, I'm going to take the time to make sure this order is right, argue with the cook if it's wrong, make sure they have the condiments they might want but haven't specifically asked for" - all that stuff.

If it's just primarily a take-out place and they have a beat-up plastic jug there, I would still throw your change or a buck in there because a) why not, b) it might be going to, like, the delivery person to cover for the people who under-tip. Or for all I know they empty it out at the end of the shift and buy a six-pack to share - wtf do I care, it's 65 cents or a dollar or whatever.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:22 (ten years ago) link

I got a slice and a salad to go today, fully intending to dump the change in the tiny little jar on the counter. Total came out to $5.93. So what the fuck am I gonna do.

1.) "Oh, go ahead and keep the change."

2.) Get out my wallet, with the line behind me, and fish out a buck, hoping rainbows and bluebirds don't fall out in front of everyone when I stick it in the jar.

3.) Take the change and get out of there, noting in my head that I'll get them the next time, maybe even stuff a dollar in my shirt pocket.

Went with (3.)

ha, it seems i made the exact same post two years ago:

servers still often have to tip out on to-go orders, which i get most ppl dont really realize, but its always fun to lose money on an order
― dearth of the hipster (Lamp), Thursday, April 28, 2011 2:40 PM Bookmark

this can't get stated enough. One of my MANAGERS actually remarked that "hey, the whole reason I *order* food to-go is so I don't have to tip! Ha ha!" and I just about stabbed the guy. People who go to sit-down restaurants and order to-go food HAVE TO TIP at least a couple bucks. It's like, yeah, you're not sitting down and getting refills and as much checking-in, but the server (who has actual tables, who they are trying to GIVE attention to) is taking time away from that to run around and get your to-go order together, including all the behind-the-scenes service (making sure it's made right, arguing with the cook when it's not, including the condiments you might want, putting the ice cream in a separate styrofoam thing so it doesn't melt as fast etc etc) - - c'mon!

sorry, sore spot, carry on y'all.

huh cool, amazing how the money you used to pay for the thing teleported itself from your wallet to the cashier without you having to do any of this

It's also same-day money, which can be a big advantage. When I waited tables, I enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to wait every two weeks for my windfall, I took home cash nightly. (Though I also made about 1/6th what I make now, but that's cuz I worked in a shitty restaurant).

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 June 2013 04:49 (ten years ago) link

so it's like tivo for your money?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 21 June 2013 05:21 (ten years ago) link

5 years after I quit waiting tables and started working as a legal assistant, I'm still not making what I was making waiting tables (at a seafood restaurant w/ lots of business clientele).

Tax evasion on tips is less common these days due to credit cards and the magic of the restaurant automatically reporting imputed tips for cash sales. Which means that if you get stuffed on a cash sale, you wind up in the hole for that sale.

Je55e, Friday, 21 June 2013 11:33 (ten years ago) link

yeah. restaurants are bad at the whole reconciling thing, too. there was one period of time where my restaurant, less than a year before it shut down, was doing horrible business. Friday nights, most waiters were taking home a measily $50. One night I worked a long shift and due to it being ridiculously slow, my tips plus the $2.13 an hour I got paid at the time actually came out to less than minimum wage. So naturally, I reported my tips accurately that night. Also, at the time I was in school, so I only worked a handful of shifts a week.

The restaurant was legally required to adjust my pay so that I made minimum wage. Instead, they altered the tips I reported to claim more than I actually made. Illegal, yes, but at the time I had just gone to corporate behind the GM's back about some unethical practice in our store, which they forced him to desist, so I was afraid of getting shitcanned for farting or coughing so I just said nothing.

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 June 2013 12:22 (ten years ago) link

How much should you tip your server for farting?

kinder, Friday, 21 June 2013 12:43 (ten years ago) link

Restaurant managers can be the worst bosses. Either they have never worked as servers or bartenders, so they don't understand how to manage for those jobs*, or they did, and they get bitter about servers and bartenders making so much more than they are.

* At my last waiting job, we had a dipshit manager who was promoted from a few months of hosting after never having worked in a restaurant. He tried to write me up for using hand sanitizer instead of washing my hands after every single time I touched a used dish. Which is IMPOSSIBLE if you want to have time to do the rest of the job. He removed all the containers of hand sanitizer from wait stations.

ok, i understand tipping on take out from a sitdown restaurant now... i'm just never gonna get takeout from a sitdown restaurant then

乒乓, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:17 (ten years ago) link

I don't think I've ever gotten takeout from a sitdown restaurant? Unless that includes like Indian places that have some perfunctory tables that no one ever uses.
I didn't even know this was a thing people would do!

chinavision!, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:34 (ten years ago) link

WilliamC, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:40 (ten years ago) link

wait I don't even get takeout from Indian places, just delivery, in which case the delivery guy obviously gets a tip.

chinavision!, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

I get takeout from sit down places all the time, because they're so popular/crowded that there's a two-hour wait for a table, and they don't take reservations.

This amigurumi Jamaican octopus is ready to chill with you (Phil D.), Friday, 21 June 2013 13:44 (ten years ago) link

I get takeout all the time from pizza places and sandwich shops with tables. It's those weirdos who do shit like get takeout from Outback Steakhouse® that freak me out.
