Genial IRL.

I wonder if he knows he is the subject of many "old man feels" on Tumblr. It's only a matter of time before they discover Fergus's Wedding.

The khalasar did so much damage in the village of the lhazareen that instead of going like 30 miles south to Slaver's Bay, they instead walked thousands of miles through the red waste to get to Qarth, and then took a boat back to Slaver's Bay? Why not turn around and go to Matarys or Volantis?

Also why were they so far south in the first place. Weren't they originally going to Vaes Dothrak before Drogo got sick? I guess they had some pillaging to do but it seems like a lot of work for such a seemingly insignificant village.

I wonder what it is about the Smoking Sea that makes it smoking.

House Bolton lives in a place called Dreadfort and no one thought it was a bad idea to ally with them?

I wonder what the terrain is like west of the Shadow Tower.

Etc.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 June 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

Yeah Bolton's whole thing screams "villan" a little too much.

Watching the series now. I kinda wish they'll do a Napoleonic Wars epic after this.

Hockey Drunk (kingfish), Friday, 21 June 2013 04:49 (ten years ago) link

Haven't read the books, so everything I get is from the show:

-Nobody credible has seen the white walkers until Sam turns up at Castle Black in the last episode, when ravens are immediately sent out. There had been warnings before, but nobody really pays attention to the Nights Watch. Even now, it took Melisandre looking into the fire and saying "oh shit" for Stannis to move.

-Tyrion is worried about the dragons, but Tywin mentions the small nature of the last ones etc and on top of that the royals seem to have the only intel, or at least those on the small council are.

-People who have gone to foreign lands seem to be more worried about magic than Westerosi

-I quite like the way it's dealt with religion, even if it has no tight-locking connection to our world. Sure, they're way more tolerant of the Old Gods of the North and the Iron Island's Drowned Dude, but they think of them as quaint, parochial weirdos anyway. It doesn't seem that anyone in King's Landing genuinely believes in the 7, and only sees them as politically necessary to deal with the commoners (weddings, the Baelor, etc). Gregory of Tours was brought up, and for me it was impossible to read his Histories without seeing Clovis' use of Christianity as a cynical political necessity. The Red God is a new thing, and that seems more magic-based than deity based, but I could be wrong. Either way it tickles me that a woman has been leading the charge on introducing a monotheistic god.

Dunno if this is a show or book thing, but it is oddly fascinating how this show depicts women in power while simultaneously undermining women in positions of power. I can only assume the books don't have random naked women bobbing about in the background.

in the book, didn't they go through the Red Waste because dany was superstitiously following the path of the comet? or was that just an excuse she was using to save face?

It was the only way for them to go to avoid being killed or enslaved by competing tribes

Moodles, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, wasn't it a matter of taking the path of least resistance, no matter how environmentally inhospitable?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:47 (ten years ago) link

I think it would be funny if she made it all the way to King's Landing, killed just about everyone in her way, then when she was about to take the throne Joffrey, who had been hiding, pops out and stabs her in the ear, stays King, and then the show/series ends.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 21 June 2013 13:49 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I've joked before that the very last scene of the last episode will be a tracking shot across the Red Keep throne room; bodies of dead dragons and people scattered about on the floor. The camera pans up to reveal Joffrey sitting on the iron throne, smirking directly into the camera. Fade to black, end titles.

just stopping by with a tip: if anyone on here thinks that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is hot, I strongly recommend that you watch the Danish 1994 thriller "Nightwatch" (Nattevagten)- it features a 24 year old NCW and his megawatt cuteness had me reaching for the smelling salts (plus it's a fun, over-the-top thriller even if you're not there to gawk). As a GoT bonus, one of the characters has an outcome that eerily predicts an element of the Jamie Lannister plotline too . . .

Chugging thru this season and I still want this cast & crew to do a Napoleonic epic. With a proper HBO budget, they could do wonders.

It's also based on books that are really very good. Better than the dumb movie (which I totally enjoyed every minute of).

Since S3 has ended I've blazed through the second and third books, halfway through #4 now. It's a testament to Charles Dance the actor that he can do justice to Tywin so completely. His performance is absolutely perfect throughout.
