i thought TLOU might be different as it doesn't seem to have much replay value (tried to avoid reading too much about it but it seems to veer more towards heavy rain style story-telling than GTA4?).
There are plenty of quick-time moments like heavy rain, but there is also plenty of combat, and if you bump up to a harder difficulty where resource management is more important, a second playthrough will be very enjoyable imo

I thought it was OK. I wanted to play Bit Trip Runner 2 and Hitman Absolution isn't that old. Star Wars Pinball should be fine for anyone who's not already on the Pinball FX/Zen Pinball 2 train.

How soon does count and plick start so I can start writing my most hated hitman absolution rant?

I played Divekick tonight at a local meetup - man, it's ridiculous that made it to a full-fledged game! Amazingly stupid, adult swim-style. Probably more fun with alcohol and more friends and strangers, I gather

i didn't like dyad very much at all, it's got a cool vibe but the controls are garbage.

i played heavy rain through to the end and kinda enjoyed it but afterwards felt bleugh about the corny heavy-handed writing and the crappy barely-there gameplay. is this beyond two souls just another one of those or does it improve on it? (weirdly i remember liking farenheit a lot more than HR, better writing maybe)
― NI, Saturday, 12 October 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link
Poker night 2, if I had paid for you and dealt with all this buggy bullshit I would be freaking the fuck out right now
― ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Monday, 21 October 2013 04:06 (ten years ago) link
xp i haven't played Heavy Rain yet, but Farenheit had terrible writing - but it was terrible like a schlocky B-movie, and kind of entertaining up until the last third
― Nhex, Monday, 21 October 2013 04:31 (ten years ago) link
Haha otm
― Bitch Fantastic (DJP), Monday, 21 October 2013 05:59 (ten years ago) link
i adored fahrenheit until the end (when a cool serial killer detective murder story turned into yet another occult secret energy weapon blah blah blah), so Nhex otm; i REALLY REALLY wanted to love heavy rain as well but, well, 1) dead children and 2) barely there gameplay made for a fairly dreary experience
i went on a binge this weekend and downloaded:
1) GTA52) The Last of Us3) Okami HD4) The Unfinished Swan
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 October 2013 10:31 (ten years ago) link
oh and:
5) RAIN
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 October 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link
I have already decided I'm not going play much more Unfinished Swan. It's an awesome idea but - and here it's similar to Heavy Rain - they sort of forgot to spend some time on making it fun.
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 October 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link
nhex, if you thought fahrenheit was bad you're gona HATE heavy rain. la noire level ponderous rubbishness. any word on beyond two souls yet? it's a reach i know but really hoping it makes good on the v v promising 'film-cum-game' premise. similarly, is last of us like HR or fallout or what? dying to play but been burned so many times lately (think i'm poss expecting too much of game-makers)
― NI, Monday, 21 October 2013 17:31 (ten years ago) link
word is that Beyond is even more diminishing returns than HR. sigh. (i know i'm gonna play these both anyway)
i really enjoyed Fahrenheit, just the whole last magic junk totally botched what was set up so well at the beginning, like Tracer said
I think Last of Us is more like Uncharted, it's by the same people
― Nhex, Monday, 21 October 2013 18:15 (ten years ago) link
the rivaling protagonist thing was SUCH a good idea in Fahrenheit, it's a really shame that nobody has crafted an entire game of that (even Fahrenheit itself)
― Nhex, Monday, 21 October 2013 18:18 (ten years ago) link
ack, i had real problems with uncharted 2 - mostly how it was so strictly linear, no chance to do anything that wasn't the exact abc steps mapped out by the makers. also clunky sluggish controls/movement and the ugly standard sexist/corny dialogue. i realise i'm alone in this as the uncharted series gets mad love on here and most everywhere else, but am i likely to find last of us basically the same? (this qu to anyone who's played LoU, obv)
― NI, Monday, 21 October 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link
Last of Us is great but it's definitely not an open-world game. I liked it much more than Uncharted even though on a surface level they have a lot of similarities.
― polyphonic, Monday, 21 October 2013 20:07 (ten years ago) link
ok sold, though im gona wait til it goes down another fiver (currently around £25 used)

all games in this genre should be like this, i'd much rather have a guided experience than have one that's on rails but pretends it's not
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link
nah, i'd take the illusion of freedom over a game that could be done with eyes closed if i spent a few minutes revising what buttons to click and when. uncharted 2 even looked like an semi-openworld game, all this gorgeous scenery, detailed buildings and mountains and villages in the near-distance but if you took a few steps off the strictly delineated route you'd come up against the magical immersion-killing invisible barrier. felt tutted at if i tried to go for a mooch rather than doing the a>b>c route. this hasn't really bothered me before (grew up on 8 bit) but uncharted 2 had me grinding my teeth with rage. expectations prob too high, dunno
― NI, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link
The linearity is what makes Uncharted so much fun IMO!
― the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 09:57 (ten years ago) link
ya its like getting mad at a racing game because you're limited to the track. that's where the fun is. it's not the kind of game where you go shopping and find NPCs to talk to.
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link
i suffer from TALK TO EVERY NPC AND PRESS "A" ON EVERY DAMN THING so the occasional superlinear uncharted etc experience is very pleasant. that said i thought the last of us was pretty bad.
― adam, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link
xposts i know what you're saying but something about the super-strict DO THIS GO HERE DONT EVEN THINK OF GOING OVER THERE really grated on me. so wearying and nagging after playing semi-open & brilliant stuff like far cry 3/BD, dishonored, splinter cell, etc. (uncharted 2 being, uh, a bit closer in gameplay to those than 'a racing game'). hated tons of other things about it though so maybe under diff circumstances i wouldn't have minded so much.
adam, what didn't you like about LoU?
― NI, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link
ya i actually find that kind of thing refreshing after so many open-world games that dont really provide fun so much as the illusion of fun, most of them are just walking around pretty dead zones looking for people to give you chores to do
