It's the Uralkali mine in Permskaya Oblast.

that's just not right at all

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 20 November 2014 13:50 (nine years ago) link

what the hell do they do with these things once they open up like that? how many trucks worth of rock or concrete would it take to fill it? or do they just leave them to fill up with water?

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 20 November 2014 13:52 (nine years ago) link

There's a possibility that the photo might be a fake as it's much larger than the initial unconfirmed report given by the mining company. Their shares are tanking anyway, though.

That's what...five houses gone?

imago, Thursday, 20 November 2014 14:37 (nine years ago) link

goddamn, when one of those opens up is it instant doom fall or is it sort of gradual?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

Up until this point I'd been convinced that Russia didn't have any houses at all. I've only ever seen concrete apartment buildings peppered among otherwise barren landscapes.

it's pretty sudden by all accounts - it's a plug of earth over a giant cavity giving way xp

Just trying to mentally prepare myself for what it would be like if my home was ever sucked into a sinkhole with me inside

From http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/article/russian-potash-giant-uralkali-s-shares-drop-after-sinkhole-suspends-production-at-mine-/511417.html

The sinkhole, stretching 20 by 30 meters, was found 3.5 kilometers east of the mine, the regional emergency situations ministry said on Wednesday. It is located on an abandoned mine and does not pose a threat to people who live in Solikamsk town.

Yeah sure...

willem, Thursday, 20 November 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

People were relocated last summer, apparently: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-12/uralkali-s-hometown-could-face-new-sinkhole-risk-by-2015.html

willem, Thursday, 20 November 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

The mine's apparently partly owned by the guy who also owns the Brooklyn Nets.
