haha what an odd go-to point of comparison

well unfortunately there's no history of rappers with "weird" voices achieving wide success for us to draw on

Sorry, wasn't aware of many rappers whose voice grated some like Chance's. It is an odd comparison.
― Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:50 (ten years ago) link
Maybe it's the "neh neh neah" voice that's the most annoying... And some of the singing as well...

this talk about his weird grating voice is strange to me because it's so similar to lil wayne's? i mean not identical but certainly in the same lane, and it's made pretty obvious at the start of the tape when he says "please say the rapper"
i'm mostly with rtc in that i don't find what chance says particularly compelling, it's all a bit too backpackery for me though i don't hate it or anything
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link
what does 'too backpackery' mean in relation to what he's talking abt
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link
i def thought his earlier stuff was a little too much The Craft Of Song and not enough of him in it, but recent stuff is more fully fleshed out.
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:51 (ten years ago) link
Man...I can't at all understand anyone who says they don't find him compelling. "Paranoia" breaks my heart every time I hear it. I can't remember the last song that did the same.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link
yeah i don't get that criticism at all
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link
Rapping about your close friend being stabbed to death doesn't strike me as excessively backpackery tbh
― Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:09 (ten years ago) link
Lol at the idea of reducing a goofball like him to I R SERIOUS RAP tho, even if he does have some shit gettin' too real moments
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:10 (ten years ago) link
that one's not on acid rap
idk it's all fine i guess but it doesn't feel distinct, or anything i feel i need to go back to? nothing about it is substandard but i can't pinpoint anything that really stands out for me, i feel like it all reminds me of other stuff
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link
oh the weed coughs are pretty dnw i guess
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:12 (ten years ago) link
I must be in a morbid mood because it's the death-related lines that stuck with me.
― Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:15 (ten years ago) link
"Paranoia"? It's like part 2 of the second track.

oh is that why there's a huge gap in the middle of "pusha man", i did wonder
sorry, it didn't hit me or grab me then :/ i admit my attention had almost completely wandered by the last few tracks though. (this was a long-belated relisten, i hadn't heard it since my first go)

I think he'll be great live, despite my earlier posts. And do think it's clearly one of the best tapes this year.

Yeah... it was okay.
Maybe chanting U.S.A. and running off stage at the end isn't an awesome move in Europe. In fact, there were more than a few amateurish moves, including cutting off tracks early and sort of criticizing the audience for not 'having fun', but I guess he's still finding his feet in front of different audiences.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:13 (ten years ago) link
criticizing the audience for not 'having fun'
Everyone does this now.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:35 (ten years ago) link
I mean, obviously not acts who are good enough live to make the audience actually have fun, but there are a lot of butthurt whining performers around nowadays.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 22:37 (ten years ago) link
idk having seen them perform up close sounds like someone who isn't used to the way a rap DJ interacts w/ the crowd
dj oreo is a thorough fuckin party DJ

he killed live when we saw him in toronto.
show sold out. originally was 15$ ended up being way more expensive if you didn't get tickets in advance (we did).
high energy all the way through, crowd knew the words to most of the songs, chance was loving it. granted he wasn't opening for a big tour - it was a day off in between stops on the mac miller tour and he was the headliner at the hoxton which is small-ish but still, he definitely knows how to work a crowd.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 19 September 2013 04:03 (ten years ago) link
Actually, yeah, I thought DJ Oreo was great. The intro was amazing fun.
But don't get me wrong, the show was fine as a whole. I go to rap show often enough, but was surprised that they really took it in the direction of full blown party atmosphere. Sometimes the hype and vibe works to just enhance what's already there, sometimes it feels a bit forced. Maybe I just wasn't feeling for some reason.
Under the circumstances, for a Wednesday night in Amsterdam, they had to work hard and in the end it was pretty crazy.
― MikoMcha, Thursday, 19 September 2013 09:25 (ten years ago) link
Really picked up on the Eminem influence on Chance live tho.
