This game feels like it was written by a men's rights guy

Maybe it's just that I associate GTA with Vice but I thought about Gavin McInnes a couple times

Women in this game are either whores or shrews

The Tesla car is rad. I don't think I would have noticed it had I had not been wearing headphones.

lots of nice cars, find myself endlessly speeding around the industrial parts with their long straight roads.

that's in between feeding stray hitchhikers to cannibals.

Yeah I was going to ask people about the tone of the game. It's occasionally funny, one of the radio DJs screamed "the Internet is a k-hole!" last night, the shrink parody is good, but it's frequently juvenile, sexist, and kinda racist.

It could probably stand to be cynical in the way that exposes prejudice rather than cementing it, I mean like The Onion or something is incredibly dark but largely a force for good, and you imagine it has women writing for it, seems doubtful for GTA.

I guess all the GTAs have been a bit like this but this one is more claustrophobic and concentrated.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 08:18 (ten years ago) link

It's not even just that it's casually sexist, it's like the writers take every opportunity to be sexist. EG the aunt and the mom exercising. Or the American Apparel spoof ads on the radio, they could attack that from the left but they go the other way entirely.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 08:21 (ten years ago) link

haven't had a chance to sit down with this until tonight - i just looked up and realized it was six in the morning!

totally enthralling so far - i didn't get very far in la noire or red dead redemption, and it's been so long since GTA IV that i forgot just how much more immersive rockstar worlds are than, say, those of the saints row games (which i still love for different reasons). the juvenilia/sexism/racism is obviously really problematic but i guess i've been playing GTA games for so long that i can kinda take it in stride at this point? the taboos were definitely part of the allure when i was playing GTA2 at 17; i cringe at it now at 30, but it's never been the main reason i've played these games. i wouldn't begrudge anybody for feeling uneasy about this stuff, but i'm less turned off by it than i thought i'd be given all the advance reactions.

Do you always get a big thunderstorm at the bit where Trevor first travels into the city? fuckin amazing anyway

the gaming press seems to be united in accepting that the satire in GTA games is amazingly clever and that it SKEWERS America when most of the time it's just this clunky, illusion-shattering shit like the Fox News knockoff literally having "Confirming Your Prejudices" as its amazing satirical genius slogan

I like that the game has an option to sync up with some real-life Facebook functionality, and also that mission where Michael goes to their office and does something that is essentially counter to the spirit of that business relationship

also, really wish I hadn't read the soundtrack spoiler links when they came out cos some of the stuff on there would've had me properly cackling with glee when it first came on

happily hadn't noticed Don Johnson's foghorned-voiced lone solo hit had crept in there though, soundtracked a bagsnatching interlude beautifully

still waiting to hear something in particular that was meant to be on there but hasn't turned up on the radio though, the big one, the elephant in the room if you will

also

cara delevingne hosts the pop station and her dialogue is seriously awful, such a weird choice of dj (she's never done anything like this before has she?). was gona post about it on that crepey ile thread dedicated to posting unflattering photos of her but nah

you ain't kidding buddy, yeesh

almost suspicious about their motives for putting her out there tbh

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 21 September 2013 11:39 (ten years ago) link

ha is that cara d, jesus! i dunno tho, she did say the line "the internet is a k-hole" which i enjoyed. the pop station is pretty good, misteeq's "scandalous" had me reaching for the volume button on my remote last night.

How have you guys played the heists so far? I've just played the first one, invested a fair old whack in my crew so I'm pretty annoyed that they don't tell you until after the mission's started that their stats will improve each time you use them but the % stays the same. Would've used cheap'ns if I'd known.

All the same, it it was fucking thrilling smashing all those jewellery cases and seeing the take go up - 10 seconds and one case left, whaddaya do?! Fun gaming

This one has changed "game world" to something scalable? telescoping? It feels completely new to me. Parts of the city become microcosmic (Franklin's neighbourhood) while other places around Trevor's house are processed as large, bulky spaces. I think of Skyrim and how after 40 hours or so, most of the gameworld had been visited on foot and dungeons investigated, but you were always looking at the game world from the same distance. GTA 5 has areas that you'll only ever see whizzing by in a drag race or from a plane. Feels very foreground/background in its design. I don't know how else to put it.

flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 21 September 2013 14:02 (ten years ago) link

trevor is fucking terrible. was like a brick wall when he was introduced. the crrrrrrrazy guy. so ccccrrrrrrrazy. how long do you have to play as him before you can switch back to a better character?

adam, Saturday, 21 September 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

not long, just blow through his available missions

so far Trevor seems like they had different people writing his creepy pointless murder bits and his hilarious wacky beating up a hapless developmentally disabled juggalo bits

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:25 (ten years ago) link

so, total GTA amateur here, but i just realized that i accidentally switched the controls to "alternate" at the very beginning of the game, just after the flashback scene that opens the game. as a result, the button that lets you zoom in a bit and aim switched to LB rather than LT. i kept pressing LT to aim, and when it didn't work, i just assumed that at the beginning of the game you have crappy weapons and poor aiming skills so you're not allowed to use the aim button. or something.

finally realized my mistake and gunplay just got a whoooooooooooooole lot easier! i was starting to get really frustrated shooting from the hip all of the time.

Z S, Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:51 (ten years ago) link

*minor spoilers if you're not very far in the game*

i'm having a little trouble playing the market. my general strategy is to buy stocks that have taken a recent downturn - buy low, sell high, of course. so when the facebook-esque guy meets his untimely end, i thought that would be a great time to buy their stock since the prices collapse. but it seems like...they just keep collapsing. oops.

Z S, Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:54 (ten years ago) link

That happened to me too. Whoops

polyphonic, Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

Ha I did exactly that too.

JimD, Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

best gta. love this game already.

anyone got a gf yet. franklin <3 infernus the stripper.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

the default controls are still a bit confusing cos there are so many functions to juggle, not sure about using right d-pad for so much stuff

have had various incidents where I inadvertently killed hobos with one punch while experimenting to see if the cinematic camera worked on foot, unwillingly jacked buses I was trying to ride like a good citizen etc

also can't throw people's litter at their heads any more I think?

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

Jeff Gerstmann mentioned his disappointment at the satire of the game, that it hadn't really developed or advanced at all since the GTA3 era, only with more topical references cut & pasted in.

I played 4 later than everyone else did after Saints Row 3 and at that point, all the jokes were really lazy entry level dick jokes and knob gags. I mean, it hadn't even hit the level of sophomoric yet.

i tried to make franklin <3 nikki, but nikki went to the doctor and "can't have any dick" now

Z S, Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:45 (ten years ago) link

the aiming function is really bugging me. much more difficult when trying to shoot from vehicles, gta4 was bad for this but this is daft. whole system seems crappy, the shooting range missions aren't enjoyable in any way because using this tiny pad to aim a tiny crosshair means it veers all over the place. doesn't seem to even be a zoom function where you can see the target and crosshair better - i've been playing sc:blacklist a ton lately and the shooting/aiming system in that is perfect so this is kinda frustrating.

localgarda otm re all the sexism stuff. don't think i've encountered any female character yet who isn't obsessed with sex/money/crack. makes the whole thing unpleasant, esp as it didn't have to be like this - this could have been the game where they turned it all around but instead they kept on aiming it at the late-teen male. v grim.

finally got to trevor and agree he's so much more fun to play than the other whiney two characters - esp driving over vast desert landscape, these parts remind me a bit of red dead redemption. but yeah not so much looking forward to going back to playing as 2d 'moral core of the game' franklin and frustrated dad 101 michael.

ZS - there's a ~development~ later in the game that makes it a wee bit easier to play the stockmarket

cozen, Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

As far as aiming is concerned, I definitely recommend changing your reticle in the menus so it's more visible. It defaulted as a single white pixel and it was constantly getting lost in the background.

Also recommend turning radar off and only using blips. I spend a lot less time looking at the HUD now, but still have enough information to go by.

polyphonic, Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:06 (ten years ago) link

one thing about this game is that i spend like 90% of the time driving looking at the tiny mini-map and missing the gorgeous scenery and shit

though i took a nice selfie on top of hte mountain

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:09 (ten years ago) link

does anyone else find the icons in the help messages are ridiculously small? not sure if it's the res of my tv but it's like "press *invisible dot* plus *invisible dot* to activate franklin's special ability. my eyesight isn't the best but they're actually miniscule.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:11 (ten years ago) link

Apparently they've sold over 13m copies of this already. The fact they're still struggling to even keep the social club site up with that many users makes me think they're unlikely to actually hit the October 1st launch of the online game (or at least if they do launch it, it'll be broke for weeks).

JimD, Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:18 (ten years ago) link

thanks polyphonic, gonna do both those. good point in an article above: All of that endless vista, and you with your eyes too-often glued to the mini-map.

most non-game-world things on screen are too small. i play on a bigscreen tv sat across the room and i'm constantly having to get up to read those tiny text messages and instructions before they disappear. never had this problem with any other game, like they've squeezed all the extra bits on there as small as possible

NI, Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

before launch they were saying how they expected to sell to half of all ps3 and xbox owners on the first day or something wild. did this happen?

NI, Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

The heist music is amazing, the way it builds.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Saturday, 21 September 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

Not yet. There are about 13m ps3/360 consoles in just the the uk at the moment, and their 13m sales are worldwide. But I think they were projecting total lifetime sales and this is just 3 days in, so who knows.
