Also of course chocolate; and chips with mayonnaise!

Mmmmm.... chocolate and chips with mayonnaise....

I think you need to include some French breakcore, something off of the PeaceOff! label, Rotator perhaps.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago) link

smeared all over jacques brel... anyway this is a thread abt french music, so we need to get back to the point. you should really put some of that great african fusin frederic gaillano does for f-com and the frikiyiwa label on here, so as not to be accused of an "ethnically cleansed" comp a la amelie, but mainly because it's fab.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago) link

I had no idea the Amelie soundtrack had been accused of being "ethnically cleansed"...

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

Brigitte Fontaine - Pipeau
Jacqueline Taieb - 7 heures du matin
Charlotte Lelie - Les filles c'est fait

I'll happily second these.

I'll try and suggest some specific tracks for the french hip hop acts I mentioned upthread. Maybe tomorrow.

Hopefully all this Belgian=French nonsense is nipped in the bud now. Good grief.

The obvious: Magma, Heldon. Less obvious but essential: ZNR (first LP, 'Barricades 3'). Whatever became of DDAA? Seems that one has been written out of history. Strange.

More Brigitte Fontaine/Areski! Their importance in blending the chanson tradition with middle eastern music, jazz, rock, and post-May 1968 consciousness is very important.

Anyone here ever heard the 60s recordings of Stella? Stella, a 15 year-old ye-ye singer - later to become Stella Vander of Magma. Very odd pop singles, these. (There is or was a double cd of her complete 60s output - NOTHING like Magma but quite odd for the genre they are part of.)

"Their importance in blending the chanson tradition with middle eastern music, jazz, rock, and post-May 1968 consciousness is very important."

Super Maria (Bertrand Burgalat) - "Au sommaire de Tricatel"

Yannick - "Ces Soirées Lá" (the French Will Smith does the French "Get Jiggy Wid It")

"J'ai pas vingt ans"
"Gourmandises"
"L'Alize"
"A Contre-Courant"

so has anyone heard Noir Désir? i've only heard of them through the recent murder case, and i want to know what they sound like.

zappi (joni), Friday, 16 April 2004 02:46 (twenty years ago) link

I had no idea the Amelie soundtrack had been accused of being "ethnically cleansed"...

the movie was, repeatedly, not the soundtrack

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 16 April 2004 08:52 (twenty years ago) link

Oh right, that would make more sense.

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago) link

well, that's what i said, anyway. the accusation was in a piece in the guardian, by a writer i can't remember saying there were no africans in the arrondisements used in the film when they are actually quite african areas. this is bollocks coz the director was in la haine is well known for being pretty political in exactly the other direction, plus the film wasn't exactly a documentary in the 1st place... one of the most imbecilic bits of movie crit i've ever read (however, this is pretty much a qualification for being a guardian critic - my own couple of appearances in said organ excepted, naturally! - so you shouldn't be surprised)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago) link

well it does trade in a nostaglic version of paris, a version that notably does not include africans or arabs

what did people think of prudence???

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago) link

I think it would be absolutely criminal not to include Christophe...

Just try "Les Mots bleus" (with lyrics written by Jean-Michel Jarre...(?!!)), "Le Beau Bizarre", or "les Paradis Perdus".

Snowballing, Friday, 16 April 2004 10:49 (twenty years ago) link

I really enjoy that Prudence track, it's sung by Armelle Pioline, frontwoman of a band called Holden which has great tunes too, like "Une fraction de seconde" and "c'est plus pareil".

Sami (Sami), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

duly noted!

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:53 (twenty years ago) link

Although I particularly dislike it, the 90's French folk-rock scene should be represented I guess. Stuff like Louise Attaque, Miossec, as well as the accoustic Domique A, Francoise Breuz (sp?).

You should include something by French punk pioneers Bérurier Noir. Try "Salut à toi", "Fils de...", "L'Empereur Tomato Ketchup", or "Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge".

Yeah for a while already. I was listening to Lio's Banana Split the other day and thinking how much it sounded like le Mambo du Decalco...

Baaderonixx: the lost ILX years (baaderonixx), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:00 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, richie had pretty good electro-bebete-pop hits. very underated in france. which is weird since lio is pretty respected nowadays in "the scene" (mostly thanks to jacno).
anyway, about the list : am i wrong or is johnny not in it (ok he's belgian but he's the quintessential french rocker... together with eddy mitchel and dick rivers, so...).

i am stunned that no one has mentioned dominique a. or francoiz breut or katerine or programme... the lithium label in general, as it once was. what about yann tiersen or a lot of the folks associated with ici d'ailleurs, such as dominique pettitgand?

almost all of dominique's cds are stunning, most particularly "la fossette" from 1993 and the more recent "auguri". his live shows are not to be missed either, especially when he performs solo as documented on his live dvd.
