The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Man, I miss my Tones on Tail records. I haven't heard them on years, but they were on the YUMMIEST looking coloured vinyl.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Picking "Motorcycle" over "So Alive" is evidence of senility and/or encroaching deafness. "Motorcycle" is a painfully stupid, embarrassing train wreck of nonsense that is about on par with the worst of Justin Timberlake in terms of "rank pile of shit"-ness.

Anyone with sense is going to pick "????" off that album.

Daniel Ash in a heartbeat. Peter Murphy has never really interested me away from Bauhaus.

I dare say that "Cry Me A River" by same is also a quadrillion times better than "So Alive".

It's not that the lyrics of "Motorcyle" are anything great -- it's simply THAT huge fucking guitar sound. So unweildy and massive and great -- that you can't appreciate it only underscores your (typical) failure to understand that which rocks.

Anyone with sense is going to pick "????" off that album.

Do you mean "Jungle Law"? It's fucking brilliant.

Daniel Ash in a heartbeat. Peter Murphy has never really interested me away from Bauhaus.

I like quite a bit of Murphy's solo stuff, but sort've lost interest circa Holy Smoke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

that you can't appreciate it only underscores your (typical) failure to understand that which rocks.

That which rocks is usually synonymous with that which sucks.

Dan (For Reals) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you suck rock?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I am not a crackhead, no.

Dan (Just Say No) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

YUMMY SUGAR FROSTED CRACK.

I disagree with Dan on the worth of "Motorcycle" but I like me the big riffs, as Alex notes. But I do highly agree with Dan on the worth of "So Alive."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Ehh...I guess. I just had a hard time believing that the same cats who recorded "So Alive" also birthed brilliant stuff like "Stigmata Martyr" and "Swing the Heartache," etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

So what's wrong with variety? Besides, the whole point of Bauhaus WAS variety. "Mask" the song would have been nowhere near as good if that shockingly beautiful acoustic guitar line hadn't appeared out of nowhere towards the end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll tell you what's great: "No Big Deal."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Hehehe. Yes. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

"No Big Deal" is extremely overrated even if it is catchy as hell.

Dan (Truth In Advertising) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I've heard the song in 15 years.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:57 (eighteen years ago) link

"No Big Deal" is extremely overrated

Not NEARLY as overrated as "So Alive".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 November 2005 21:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the important thing to recognise here is not whether or Pete Murphy is fractionally > Daniel Ash in any particular respect; or indeed whether David J's haircut is significantly > Kevin Haskins' trousers; but the fact that Bauhaus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> absolutely anything that any of it's individual members have ever been involved with either individually, with other people, or in any combination other than Bauhaus, ever.

""Slender Fungus" is completely goddamn brilliant!"

Heed Ned well - for he speaks with great wisdom and perceptiveness.

"You'd describe Tom Petty as a shining ball of meat?"

Well, maybe not: but I've long had my suspicions that he sucks the toes that linger round your feet - and indeed, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that has kissed a fish inside a stolen jeep on at least one occasion. Possibly even more often than that.

Now having established peace, let us now demonstrate that Bauhaus is superior to Killing Joke.

*notes explosion in NYC area*

Huh, odd. Anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I was hoping I wouldn't have to be the only one backing Ned up on his opinion of "Slender Fungus."

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Now I'm tempted to use my one allowed cover song for NaSoAlMo....

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:48 (eighteen years ago) link

"Now having established peace, let us now demonstrate that Bauhaus is superior to Killing Joke."

Sounds like a cue for a new thread....

Martin, if you do a cover of "Slender Fungus," glory shall be yours forever.

Ash could have been replaced to little fanfare

Owen, you must stop taking these drugs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:55 (eighteen years ago) link

My vote goes to Ash for his work with the Jazz Butcher in particular and post-Bauhaus activity in general.

Funnily enough, this very statement came up when I did a Google search with the following words: "stack", "crap", "stack of crap".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:00 (eighteen years ago) link

"Uh, you mean David J and his work with the Jazz Butcher, yes?"

AFAIK all of Love And Rockets backed Mr Fish up on numerous tracks.

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Hm. Now that I look at the records I only see Haskins on one track, and a "Mr. Jones" also credited with David J on most of 'em.

Still, Ash wins.

daniel ash EASILY, a girl i knew in iceland had that one ash solo album with 'day tripper' on it ('coming down' i think??) - great stuff

"Bauhaus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> absolutely anything that any of it's individual members have ever been involved with either individually, with other people, or in any combination other than Bauhaus, ever."

Stewart has spoken the truth. As far as frontmen go though, I'd chose Peter.

Yeah, I love that first solo album -- really fantastic and just as trippily crazed as the fourth Love and Rockets album, all over the place and better for it.

L&R are even namechecked (and sing!) on "The Devil Is My Friend"

Ah, now this is very true. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:49 (eighteen years ago) link

The first version of "Coming Down" is a really great grind. I also remember a cover of "Day Tripper" that emphasized the bass over the melody; it was almost shoegaze. (Ned will correct me if I'm wrong.) Either way, nice stuff.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

i really need the bubblemen record.

The long version of "Walk This Way" that came out on that Beggar's Banquet is, as the hip kids say, TEH SHIT!

According to jazzbutcher.com, which is pretty reliably complete, David & Kevin were conspirators, but not Kevin.
http://jazzbutcher.com/htdb/people

Anyway, Ash - no doubt. Pete is a clown.

THE BUBBLEMEN PWN ALL!!!!

On planet girl, we go for a whirl... etc. oh yeah, best spin off ever.

Daniel was never involved in the Jazz Butcher. David played on a couple of albums and tours, I think Kevin did one session at least. But usually drums were played by Owen P. Jones (Apparently they woke up one day and found him living in their house "ask him if he plays drums!" said Pat "But he's got a beard!" protested Max. "Well, tell him to shave it off, and he's in," replied Pat - goes the story) and guitar was played the stupendously fantastic Max Eider.

Streatham's Paisley Princess (kate), Friday, 4 November 2005 08:52 (eighteen years ago) link

(Why do I *know* these things? OK, sayeth the girl who once wrote an illustrated novel called "301 Reasons Why I Like David J")

Streatham's Paisley Princess (kate), Friday, 4 November 2005 08:53 (eighteen years ago) link

More talk about the stupendously fantastic Max Eider, who shits all over everyone mentioned so far.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Friday, 4 November 2005 12:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't go THAT far.

However, Max Eider does rule, and "Drink" is the best song ever about the joys of sweet alcohol.

"Falling apart in bars
I like to suffer for my art
Just one more before we part..."

(For the uninitiated, imagine this being delivered and sung in the kind of light-hearted, breezy 30s jazz that Eric Idle specializes in for his Monty Python songs.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 12:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Soul Happy Hour is the best song ever about drink.
