Did she ever really happen in the US? I heard "With Ur Love" on the radio a few times but don't get the sense she's really broken through on this side of the big pond.

Love the outro on "I Wish"

Shut Down, vol. 3 (Lee626), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

Tough to say how much she broke through. With Ur Love almost made the top 10 and hung around for ages selling something like 2 million copies which sounds like a lot to me. They released Oath as a follow up which didn't really do a lot but the album still went top 10. I thought this new single would be another hit for her but it's done nothing on US itunes.

I think in the UK most people have forgotten about her now. I Wish has had zero radio play so far and has been pushed back until November (probably so they can her on X Factor that week) I'm still annoyed they didn't put out Superhero singe as a single at any point, it's still her best song by a mile.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 21:38 (ten years ago) link

It was "I Want U Back" that was the smash US hit (#12, double platinum), not "With Ur Love".
I loved "Beautiful People" off the album, that would have been a great single too.

breastcrawl, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 22:27 (ten years ago) link

Yeah you're right wrong song title. There were quite a few good single choices on that album, don't know why they gave up after just three?

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 10 October 2013 00:11 (ten years ago) link

surprised "i wish" hasn't had much traction, it's great.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 October 2013 08:45 (ten years ago) link

yeah like this a lot. KYU KYU KISS ME BOY

monotony, Thursday, 10 October 2013 12:20 (ten years ago) link

According to Compare my Radio I Wish has had just 2 plays in the last 30 days on any radio station in the UK. This is going to flop hard isn't it?

KYU KYU

i finally realised this sounds exactly like me and my girlfriend/beyonce/jayz/icona pop but with lovely brass and T.I. referencing himself/Q tip Why U Wanna do that that + nelly/kelly dilemma ohs.

although i can't recognise where KYU KYU comes from. It's almost as good as her helicopter noises.

danzig, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

It's finally out in the UK next week, no slot on X Factor for her though as they've got to make room for Robbie Williams and Celine Dion!

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 7 November 2013 03:44 (ten years ago) link

And the single has been cancelled. Think she's pretty much done in the UK now. She seems to be unable to get another hit in the US too.

In other news, she has brand new teeth now. They're very white.

oppet, Monday, 11 November 2013 09:43 (ten years ago) link

WTF? Couldn't the single have been released as download only at least?

Meine Damen und Herren, Kraf-twerk (snoball), Monday, 11 November 2013 10:03 (ten years ago) link

just watched I Wish thanks to revive. a record company should pay her a living wage just to make faces in music videos, regardless of sales, for the benefit of humanity.

Somebody make a mash-up of this and Skee-Lo's 'I Wish'.

So a second album is actually happening. Sorry I'm Late is out on May 27th.

Second single is this Katy Perry like ballad. Not sure how much I like it yet.

Yeah I'm not too into that. Prefer her playful than in Sia mode.

5/11 of the songs are already released

"dirty love" has a pretty massive chorus but the production is really brash and kind of off-putting. "sirens" is kind of tame and not special at all. "human" is a pretty fucking epic/sweeping/dramatic Big Ballad! without a doubt my fave from the album so far is "bind your love" tho:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT2Eh8BbeS4

it's pretty unassuming at first but has taken over my life now. the melodies are so light and beautiful.

uberweiss, Monday, 28 April 2014 00:37 (ten years ago) link

Yeah Bind Your Love is great and probably my favourite song from the album so far, just ahead of I Wish. Shame this album will completely flop.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 28 April 2014 14:02 (ten years ago) link

Ooh I hadn't been into the previous singles but Bind Your Love is v nice. I'm not super enthused about the overall direction but with the right songs she could def make it work

lex pretend, Monday, 28 April 2014 15:08 (ten years ago) link

oh wow the video to "sirens" is...what is going on here? she plays a dealer's gf who burns his stash when the cops arrest him? LOTS of amazing overacting in this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyqFA0JGc-o

it makes me like the song more

lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 13:09 (ten years ago) link

she should've just gone ahead and called "human" "human after all"

lex pretend, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 13:36 (ten years ago) link

Yeah that video is quite something. That's actually the first time I've enjoyed the song too.

the video for sirens is next level.

hits hard everytime i watch it.

has the second album done anything US side as it looks as she is a done deal in the UK now ?

mark e, Thursday, 11 September 2014 19:55 (nine years ago) link

i see i didn't really post in this thread after the album came out but it's really grown into one of my favourite albums of the year. she kills those power ballads. it feels very vulnerable and fragile and kinda depressive for a major label pop album; i'd sort of file it somewhere near kelly clarkson's my december maybe? i guess i haven't talked about it much because it feels like such a lost cause trying to get anyone to care but it's a strong personal favourite.

lex pretend, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

(and in terms of big(ish) pop artists, this is one of the few total triumphs of the year so far *stares at ariana in disappointment*)

lex pretend, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:01 (nine years ago) link

ta for the nudge lex.
guess it's time to hit the buy now option on amazon ..
don't think i have even seen the new album in the racks.
if there are more tracks in the same league as 'sirens' then i will be a happily depressed man.

mark e, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

has the second album done anything US side

Not really. The album briefly hit the top 20 then was gone. She's mostly known for that Demi Lovato number (Demi's best song imo) which went big, but Cher didn't really bring much to that.

everything, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

ok, i've checked.
not even zoverstocks are selling the new album off cheap.
thats how low profile it was in the uk.

mark e, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

in fact, its listed as an import !?
has the second album even been released in the UK ?

mark e, Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Really real deal love this album. Killin It is huge, surely it will be a single right??

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Thursday, 11 September 2014 20:53 (nine years ago) link

It reached number 21 in the UK but dropped out of the top 100 after one week. Sirens missed the top 40 by one place. Doubt there will be anymore singles from the album anywhere now. Really she needs to put out Bind Your Love and go on X Factor to perform it but that's not very likely. They've not tried to push her in the UK since the first album came out for some reason. Agree with Lex that this has grown to be one of my favourite albums of the year.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 11 September 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

Top 3 of the year for me! I can't express how much I love Human.

just re-listening in prep for eoy lists and the whole build up to finally finishing with 'alone with me' is so so good :)

nxd, Thursday, 4 December 2014 10:50 (nine years ago) link

this album has such a low profile in the uk, not even zoverstocks have it available.

mark e, Thursday, 4 December 2014 11:29 (nine years ago) link

X Factor final weekend inspired me to finally listen to this album and it's really good! Far better than its low profile would make it seem.

I can't express how much I love Human.

this album is full of wonderful songs, but this one hits hard and brings on the chills up the spine.
best pop album i have heard in a long time.

i still love both albums far more than i should.

Disappointing new single. The chorus isn't bad but the verses sound so clumsy. I had high hopes after how brilliant Sorry I'm Late was.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 22 July 2016 13:29 (seven years ago) link

The chorus is all kinds of wonderful though! I'm loving this a lot.
