ack, i had real problems with uncharted 2 - mostly how it was so strictly linear, no chance to do anything that wasn't the exact abc steps mapped out by the makers.
all games in this genre should be like this, i'd much rather have a guided experience than have one that's on rails but pretends it's not
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 05:02 (ten years ago) link
nah, i'd take the illusion of freedom over a game that could be done with eyes closed if i spent a few minutes revising what buttons to click and when. uncharted 2 even looked like an semi-openworld game, all this gorgeous scenery, detailed buildings and mountains and villages in the near-distance but if you took a few steps off the strictly delineated route you'd come up against the magical immersion-killing invisible barrier. felt tutted at if i tried to go for a mooch rather than doing the a>b>c route. this hasn't really bothered me before (grew up on 8 bit) but uncharted 2 had me grinding my teeth with rage. expectations prob too high, dunno
― NI, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 05:58 (ten years ago) link
The linearity is what makes Uncharted so much fun IMO!
― the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 09:57 (ten years ago) link
ya its like getting mad at a racing game because you're limited to the track. that's where the fun is. it's not the kind of game where you go shopping and find NPCs to talk to.
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link
i suffer from TALK TO EVERY NPC AND PRESS "A" ON EVERY DAMN THING so the occasional superlinear uncharted etc experience is very pleasant. that said i thought the last of us was pretty bad.
― adam, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 14:10 (ten years ago) link
xposts i know what you're saying but something about the super-strict DO THIS GO HERE DONT EVEN THINK OF GOING OVER THERE really grated on me. so wearying and nagging after playing semi-open & brilliant stuff like far cry 3/BD, dishonored, splinter cell, etc. (uncharted 2 being, uh, a bit closer in gameplay to those than 'a racing game'). hated tons of other things about it though so maybe under diff circumstances i wouldn't have minded so much.
adam, what didn't you like about LoU?
― NI, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:59 (ten years ago) link
ya i actually find that kind of thing refreshing after so many open-world games that dont really provide fun so much as the illusion of fun, most of them are just walking around pretty dead zones looking for people to give you chores to do
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:12 (ten years ago) link
hahaha i wonder what game you are talking about s1ocki :D
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link
zambies, dead daughter, general sense of Importance, usual bad naughty dog shooting without nathan drake OTT legend of the nazi sub gold fun
― adam, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link
yeah like i said, it's not about wanting it to be some vast sprawling open game thing, just the option to do a mission in more than one ultra-defined way would turn up the fun quota a notch for me. bought uncharted 2 & 3 at same time so gona try out 3 soon, see if the movement/shooting mechanics have improved at all (prob my key gripe with 2)
― NI, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link
Whoa this current sale is fucking nuts. Walking dead season pass for $2.99 for ps+
― ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link
i'm even tempted to rebuy on PS3 at that price, but eh... am i really ever gonna play it again
― Nhex, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 06:31 (ten years ago) link
Ok now that I got it for free, and have spent 30 minutes on it, someone please explain to me why hotline Miami isn't completely unfun and horrible garbage.
― ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 07:22 (ten years ago) link
I spent 30 minutes on the PC version and thought it was great fun, I think maybe it's best approached as a puzzle game than a top down shooter? It's massively unforgiving but I think the point is that you need to figure out how best to approach each level over multiple attempts.
Didn't play much more though because I'm assuming it'll be a PS+ vita game eventually and I'd rather play it on there.
― JimD, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 10:34 (ten years ago) link
Yeah I think it's in the guilty satisfaction of a meticulously planned massacre coming together at the 15th attempt, controls are a bit bullshit at times tho
Think it's on US PSPlus imminently and like 2.50 on the Europe one
― random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 11:22 (ten years ago) link
jim is right, it's not a shooter at all, it's more of a plan-and-go tactical puzzle game. the high comes successful execution of those plans and the twitch satisfaction of surviving the metal-gear-on-acid AI
― Nhex, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link
not to be confused with Metal Gear Acid AI
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:22 (ten years ago) link
im guessing that it would be tons better on pc, controls on ps3 seem not so hot
on more important news, woke up to random funds being added to my account and a really poorly worded email saying that someones friend had added funds to my account to buy gta v and apologizing. obv a scam, so i went to the sony entertainment whatever from my computer and changed my password - i am new to ps3 identity theft, is there more shit that i should do? the funds are in my wallet, so it wasn't a straight phishing email.

ha and in a truly amazing design choice, it appears that i can't blank my credit card info from the pc site, so basically theres nothing else i can do until i get home 9 hours from now. thats comforting.
― ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:46 (ten years ago) link
ouch, that sucks
xps i haven't tried it on PS3 yet, but it's hard for me to imagine playing that game well without the mouse control
― Nhex, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:51 (ten years ago) link
jjj jsut dont respond. they cant access any of your information unless you give it to them. changing your password is a good move, but dont worry about anyone breaking into your cc. if you're really really concerned call the bank & block the card for 24h or something

sometimes playing it makes me wistful that I can't bring the same level of elaborate planning skills to bear on my actual workload at work as I do when I'm feverishly prioritising which guy I'm going to hit with the golf club first and what I'll do if the fuckin dog wanders in mid-massacre
― random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Saturday, 26 October 2013 14:59 (ten years ago) link
Just finished Last of Us and it was fucking great. Wasn't really feeling it for the first 3 hours or so, but once I got the mechanics down it totally sucked me in. Couldn't put it down. The last 1/3 or so was particularly beautifully done. I can honestly say I've never given a damn about characters or story in just about any game I've ever played, but I got super invested in this one. "Citizen Kane of video games" is pretty lol, but this really did impress me.

Really great Spielberg-ian moment of respite towards the end. Not sure if it was the emotional weakness from the hangover, but that was so completely unexpected and perfect.

i have bought it and am really looking forward to playing it after i finish GTA5 some time in 2015

Locked out of my wallet because I suck at filling out forms. Still downloaded catherine ($13.39) and will pounce on deadly premonition when my lock clears in 24 hours. $25! Why do you not already have this?
