Prince is ideal: he doesn't steal the song so much as sneak in and get comfortable on the couch and slips out when Monae has her erotic breakdown.

"primetime" is pretty incredible

^^ agreed. This and "Give'em What They Love" are what I kept, and whenever "Primetime" pops up I don't change it."

i think "Sally Ride" is the sleeper

She retained more of her Pazz & Jop dominance than I thought she would, I figured she'd quietly place outside the top ten

prophetic

Oscar winner Helen Mirren has been honored as woman of the year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals, twerking as part of the traditional spoof roast.
Mirren at first tried to sign the word "twerk," then let slip a curse word, opting to dance instead. She said she's tried to twerk privately in her bedroom and having to do it in public was humiliating.
"I've tried in my bedroom in private, in front of the mirror, very unsuccessfully, so absolutely humiliating to have to do it in public in front of a whole load of people.

free concert in bk was nuts. way more people than they'd let into the bandshell. waited in line two hours, then they closed the doors. hung out at the gates and danced a while. crowd ate up the want you back cover and tightrope was wild af.

Well, I'm glad to know she's alive and well. She cancelled her entire Australian tour because she was hospitalised, and there's been no personal tweets from her since 14 May. Been no info at all as to what was wrong with her, but to cancel a tour spread out over multiple weeks, it must have been pretty bad.

We weren't fans either.

i've no idea what's meant to be so awful about this song. OH NO SHE MADE A REASONABLY PROFICIENT MAINSTREAM-SOUNDING SONG

stop being so invested in ~weirdness

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:03 (eight years ago) link

it pairs well with jidenna's own single

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:04 (eight years ago) link

Jeez, I just think it's corny and irritating and actually TOO kooky if anything.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:07 (eight years ago) link

The production is certainly proficient, I will agree with you there.

― lex pretend,

she totally did this with "Primetime."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:10 (eight years ago) link

And "Tightrope."

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:13 (eight years ago) link

Also Tightrope is not exactly avant-noise.

xp

I'm with Lex. This is a step in the right direction. The retro has been smothering her futurism for a while now.

longneck, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:35 (eight years ago) link

I wouldn't call this futurism.

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:42 (eight years ago) link

"Yoga pants are sexy" is pretty of-the-moment tbh.

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:44 (eight years ago) link

i really like this and was surprised by the lukewarm reaction on TSJ

bae sremmurd (monotony), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:03 (eight years ago) link

reminds me more than anything of "7/11" and i recall people being a bit "what is this basic mess" when that premiered too

bae sremmurd (monotony), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:04 (eight years ago) link

(゜-゜) @ the persistant myth she ever had any talent anyway

(゜-゜) @ that idea she hasn't always been a fraud

(゜-゜) @ it finally all being exposed in a song about bending over doing yoga exposing your ass

Arctic Noon Auk, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:05 (eight years ago) link

what's it like exposing yourself as an ass?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:07 (eight years ago) link

She's always been a derivative fraudulent leech so this comes as no surprise and may be the current nadir of western appropriation of a spiritual meditation practice. Fuck that, look how great your ass looks.

Arctic Noon Auk, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:12 (eight years ago) link

"get off my areola"...hah

frogbs, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:18 (eight years ago) link

xp I'll take this song over goddamned "eat pray love", thanks

bae sremmurd (monotony), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:27 (eight years ago) link

I love Janelle but don't really like this single at all. Sounds way too close to Dark Horse for me.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:52 (eight years ago) link

No this isn't futurism. But at least she sounds present.

longneck, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:17 (eight years ago) link

she sounds in line with current r&b/pop trends from "7/11" to rnbass and does a decent job at it; maybe this isn't world-stoppingly great but if you really need the smelling salts for it, it does reveal how much of monáe's original retro appeal was defined against "other/mainstream r&b singers"

longneck, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:45 (eight years ago) link

My favorite Monae track was a straight up "Golden Lady" rip, so there's probably some meat on that argument.

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:59 (eight years ago) link

she sounds in line with current r&b/pop trends

this is a large part of what I find boring about this song

she still sounds great, mind you

DJP, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link

also I flat-out hated "Dance Apocalyptic" until I saw the Letterman performance of it so I now know to reserve judgment on her singles until I see her perform them live

DJP, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:04 (eight years ago) link

xxp - which song is this?

frogbs, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:04 (eight years ago) link

"Locked Inside"

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:07 (eight years ago) link

i only think this is bad relative to the jidenna single that came first, which is more awesome & in the same style

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:20 (eight years ago) link

i don't have a problem w/ this song but it is kinda hilarious. the phrase "let me see you do that yoga," which doesn't really make sense, doesn't really help this feel natural. like "7/11" it has the faint whiff of lonely island to me.

also donmonique "pilates" did the concept 100x better at the same time, and that kinda nags at me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:21 (eight years ago) link

yes but i like current r&b/pop trends, or these ones at any rate, and i don't think current r&b/pop trends as either practiced here or as a concept generally are objectionable

i would agree that the jidenna single is better - hard to stan for "yoga" especially, but there's just been a lot of negative overreaction

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 15:29 (eight years ago) link

ill agree with that

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 16:00 (eight years ago) link

I like current R&B/pop trends but her voice is too shrill for this shit. She works better with more dynamic melodies.
