cute. Are these sorts of things implicitly singles meetups? I think H and I once went to some kind of interest-based meetup group a while back and we felt like we were the only couple.

Chen had said earlier that he was "serious" about purchasing the Times, so he could work on "rebuilding its credibility and influence" by reforming its award-winning coverage of China.

Chen said he was aware that many American papers were Jewish-owned. He said he was up for the job since he had "equally competent IQ and EQ" compared with Jews.

"I am very good at working with Jews," he said.

His business card went viral yesterday http://qz.com/165136/chen-guangbiaos-ridiculous-business-card-reminds-chinese-why-they-dont-trust-philanthropists/

He's famous for, among other things, canning air from Tibet to sell to people in Beijing (more publicity stunt than serious effort)

he sounds kind of trump-like

I like this guy, and also I am Jewish. Please set up a meeting for us and I will discuss the possibility of arranging a deal for him to buy my uncle's major daily newspaper.

My dad used to have this thing where he had to visit the synagogue anywhere we went, like just to see it. We always made fun of him for it.

http://jewishphilosophyplace.wordpress.com/2014/05/14/jewish-philosophy-in-china/

Sponsored by The Center for Judaic and Inter-Religious Studies at Shandong University, the “Translation Series of Classics of the Jewish Culture” speaks to director and editor-in-chief Professor Fu Youde’ interest in Jewish philosophy and thought and how that interest shapes his understanding of Jewish Studies in China. In the United States and Israel, these kinds of centers for Jewish Studies tend to be dominated by historians, whereas at Shandong University an emphasis has been placed on modern thought and philosophy. My guess is that Josephus (!!), Mishna, and Maimonides were chosen not just for their inherent interest but rather as foundations to a Jewish wisdom tradition. I’ll observe in passing the very minor role played by history on this particular list. Most of it seems to relate to Jewish-Christian relations, and the emergence of the modern religious movement in the wake of Emancipation. But the center of gravity is occupied by the modern philosophical tradition and its basics: Mendelssohn, Cohen, Buber, Rosenzweig, Baeck, Kaplan, Heschel. There’s just enough of history to frame the modern conceptual work.

The Chinese name of the fungus literally translates to "Black Wood Ear"

We take no responsibility for the translation sins of the West

, Thursday, 21 August 2014 14:13 (nine years ago) link

how does it taste?

Mordy, Thursday, 21 August 2014 14:18 (nine years ago) link

At least they remembered to capitalize Juice.

pplains, Thursday, 21 August 2014 14:19 (nine years ago) link

I've never had the drink but the fungus itself tastes pretty bland and benefits from a splash of vinegar

, Thursday, 21 August 2014 14:23 (nine years ago) link

Its specific epithet is derived from the belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from an elder tree; the common name "Judas's ear" eventually became "Jew's ear", while today "jelly ear" and other names are sometimes used. The fungus can be found throughout the year in temperate regions worldwide, where it grows upon both dead and living wood.

Ah yes, the well known Chinese fable of Judas Iscariot

The Nazi swastika and other icons related to the white supremacist political ideal aren’t uncommon on this island. Last year, a man was photographed by local media dressed in full SS soldier uniform while attending an anti-homosexuality parade. When asked about his choice of attire, the man was quoted by local media as saying “I am against homosexuality and so were the Nazis.”

As for Rockmill, the restaurant has since changed the name of its dishes to “Long Live Purity.”

Not really much of an improvement tbh

the father of my rabbi from my childhood (who is the head of the beis din of philadelphia and who did my sister's conversion) was one of the students who survived w/ the Mir by moving to Shanghai.

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 22:03 (nine years ago) link

wait why did your sister have to convert? I mean I guess the obvious answer "she was not born to a Jewish mother" but I dunno maybe something more complicated than that?

ah OK, I was picturing some kind of complicated "hung with the reform crowd and now orthodox rabbi sez u need some conversion to orthodoxy" type thing. I dunno I make up weird stuff sometimes. Mo mikvah, mo better.
