wonder if that celtics-rockets deal was floated in the press as a way to get someone else to think, "we can beat that!"

spurs 4 through 10 rotation could play well against GS, but the odds of it are not especially favorable.

i don't understand that?

Nhex, Friday, 20 December 2013 13:31 (ten years ago) link

“Only thing we’re shooting in practice are layups and 3s,” starting point guard Patrick Beverley explains. “We don’t like midrange,” Garcia and Beverley say in unison.

The two of them have a firm grasp on Houston’s mission, but I want to know just how extreme their team’s approach is. “Did you know that LaMarcus Aldridge has shot ...” Beverley interrupts my question with the exact number of midrange shots Aldridge has hoisted relative to the entire Rockets team. As of Friday, the Portland power forward has attempted 98 more midrange shots than everyone on the Houston roster combined. That’s a startling statistic, but it’s not especially novel to Beverley, who “keeps up with everything,” as he puts it.

lag∞n, Friday, 20 December 2013 17:58 (ten years ago) link

LA has been the King of Midrange this season, but the overlooked point is that he makes them. The unanswered question for me is, have defenses begun to concede opponents the midrange, even funneling as many attempts they can into that area, to where it is becoming the point of greatest opportunity? If so, LA may be the guy who breaks that defensive scheme and starts the pendulum swinging back to defenses having to defend it more aggressively.

James Harden and Terrence Jones yell and laugh about something, but who can hear it amid the sudden distraction of Dwight suddenly singing and dancing in his underwear?

Also I don't think anyone cares that much about a PG grabbing 4 boards per game, it just seems like a meaningless extra criteria thrown in. Robertson grabbing like 9-12 boards per game with those assists and scoring numbers -- that's pretty impressive. But I'm guessing some ballhead could give a good explanation as to why the offenses he played with or the style of play back then was more conducive to a PG getting rebs?

they played at a much much faster pace back then and shot really poorly there were so many more rebounds

lag∞n, Friday, 20 December 2013 20:18 (ten years ago) link

counting stats from that era are muy inflatedo across the board

lag∞n, Friday, 20 December 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

They shot like no 3s and hella midrange shots too, woefully inefficient times

"I like to do that because it's harder to catch a little guy," Diaw recalled of the block. When asked if he was a LeBron stopper -- he did well guarding James in the Finals -- or a Curry stopper, Diaw responded with a confident "None. I am not a stopper."

that's true but no other PG back then put up those numbers. it's still pretty impressive.

if you bump the rebounds down to 3.0 the only player added is Michael Adams in that totally nonsense season where the Nuggets ran Westhead-ball.
