Big Ears Festival 2014 [Knoxville, TN] -- Reich, Cale, Ribot & more...

I started a Spotify playlist for this so I can investigate some of the artists I don't know anything about. Didn't include everything by all the listed artists -- Cale, Reich, Hecker et al would make it pretty unwieldy -- but it'll be a jumping off point for more digging.

Getting pretty stoked -- friends from London and Amsterdam are making "I might come to this" noises.

Dang, the London pal already booked flight and hotel, he's not kidding around.

i am within inches of making a decision about this, but i have a question that may determine whether or not this is worthwhile for me --

are they going to save john cale for sunday night? do they put big headliners in the middle or at the end (like most festivals ime) of the weekend? if it's at the end, i would have to miss JC and that would be terrible.
if there is evidence that they may put him in the middle, i could live with missing jonny greenwood or w/e.

Wish I had any wisdom, but the festival is so new I can't see many trends in past scheduling.

Johnny Greenwood is playing a Steve Reich piece. I mean, I'm def in the LOL RADOIHEAD ATEASE camp too, but he's not gonna be bloppin out "fake plastic trees" or somethin

as tempting as reich-bloppin is, my job doesn't really let me take a day off whenever i want, plus i would have to be gone on friday as well. anyway, i'll figure it out. just wanted to see if someone had insight about the schedule.

when terry reilly was a headliner he played on more than one day iirc? vastly different sets tho, one was an organ concert

Fwiw we have an upstairs bedroom with its own bathroom that a couple ppl can crash in if you want. There's a bed and air mattress. Email if you want -- jmaysh4rk AT gee mail. (That 4 shd be an a, obv.) We're just outside downtown.

last time i was in knoxville we stayed in a cabin near the park (what a bummer to go all the way there and not go hiking but i doubt there will be time for that, unless there is!)

to clarify -- last time i went there specifically to go hiking; this time, no (or maybe?)

All the Big Ears stuff is downtown. Hiking stuff not so much, though there are some nice trails not far across the river.

dammit I am gonna be ready the next year this thing happens, I had a different vacation scheduled in VA for the week before and there is just no way I can swing it this time

this fest is like one act from getting me to go. Like, if they announce Matana Roberts or Ben Frost or Laurel Halo or something, I'll take it as a sign than I can spare the $150. But that's a lotta money esp when you factor in travel, accommodations, food, etc

Checked the website last night and there are still some $150 passes left before they move up to the $175 passes. Nowhere near selling out completely, unless they're only selling a half dozen $175 passes.

xp -- yeah, at BE#2 I caught up with Ashley Capps and thanked him for a festival that didn't take a day and a half of travel time each way. He said FIMAV was kind of in his mind when he started conceiving BE.
