Hate the band name, but clearly it's working for them

Evan R, Thursday, 26 December 2013 17:10 (ten years ago) link

can't make out lyrics from listening to the songs, but worth reading them on the bandcamp site. lyrics sold me on these songs.

I want to like this as I like noise and pop and noisy pop, but I don't know...seems flat/kinda boring. And that's not backlash talking.

Will revisit.

definitely flat and boring to me, which is backlash talking

I enjoyed it myself. Not too long...well sequenced and uses space well. Like the electronic ending too.

As usually happens eventually, the name is just the sound of words to me now. I don't think of cement when I talk about Pavement.

Mark, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 04:50 (ten years ago) link

The internet still thinks about exceptional vagina when you search "Perfect Pussy."

"Pavement" is a somewhat more value-neutral name than "Perfect Pussy", tho

Second listen through and I am a confirmed fan. I THINK this kind of sound could so easily be relentless but it's not. It's good.

Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 05:02 (ten years ago) link

you know you're in an ILM thread about a punk rock band when someone is putting forward 'relentless' and 'good' as mutually exclusive values

this is a super interesting record imo - lotsa sweet 7th chords all over which coupled with the aggression/blown-out vocals makes for a good listen - remind me of unwound kinda?

Relentless has a negative connotation. Yes I see your point. I guess I am a family man now.

upon further review, i am creeping to the "dig it" side of the fence about the first 15 minutes of this and love the last 6-8 minutes. i didn't even make it to the last part the first time i listened.

was a strange little record.

It's not bad! Though it's weird which bands seem to get randomly picked out of underground rock for acclaim... like this seems like a band I would see at a bar and be like I'm digging this but there are probably 1000 bands that are just as cool

post here the name of a young noisy rock band that could/should be just as big as Perfect Pussy and I'll explain why PP is probably better.

Mark, Saturday, 15 March 2014 16:24 (ten years ago) link

"noisy rock" much like "experimental music" or is another dress-up box re-enactment society.
don't get it. you need a whipcrack tight drummer & better tunes to pull this off. all i hear is a rushed plod with shouting.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 15 March 2014 18:56 (ten years ago) link

at the risk of stepping beyond anything I know about, I heard two hardcore-sounding tracks by this band and thought they sounded like Melt Banana, but less aggressive. Then I heard an indie-rock sounding song, and didn't like it. Am I missing something, or are there a ton of bands who sound like this, 99% of which are not and never will be famous?

Dominique, Monday, 17 March 2014 22:04 (ten years ago) link

I've tried really hard to like this record, especially in light of all the people insinuating that I'm a bad person and/or bad critic if I don't, and it still... doesn't do anything much for me. it's not awful, it just doesn't distinguish itself. it sounds like a thousand vague memories of bands I've seen at death by audio and started to check my phone ten minutes in, whose names even blur together at this point. speaking of, the band name still bugs me, the same way most cutesy-congratulatory-shocking names do.

not sold on the sound. i like that scuzzy, raw over-driven sound sometimes; just not working here, especially with the shrieking vocals. but the lyrics i've seen, mostly from the ep but a few songs from the debut, are fierce.

i want to read this album more than i want to hear it.

OK actually cos I love the songs, the noise interludes, and bc they're not called "Melt Banana". Also afaik their name isn't meant to be cutesy/shocking/anything other than affriming

Hype is fun bc makes me feel part of something in distanced age of internet

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:18 (ten years ago) link

Yes. And what is meant by hype in this case? Seems to me it just means that 'Pitchfork likes it' + a couple.of other articles in supposedly influential publications. It's not like there are billboards everywhere, viral campaigns and well managed appearances on Ellen. This is pretty small scale hype I would say - 99.99 percent of the population has no idea this band exists. But I welcome a bit of excitement and hyperbole...if that's how it makes you feel then why not? I don't want to always feel jaded and cynical about new music despite that fact that age and experience are inevitably wearying. Remember how it used to feel?

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:43 (ten years ago) link

Yeah exactly, also age is a lot less wearying if you don't sit around whining all the fucking time

four months pass...

Just saw them but her mic wasn't working for the entire set. Like, you couldn't hear her at all for the entire thing. It was a bit weird, you'd think they'd stop the set and give her another mic. People kept glaring at the soundman but he just kept shrugging like he couldn't do anything about it. The soundman sent someone onstage to check the mics after they'd finished, and they worked OK for the headline band, so I dunno wtf that was about.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

♫ a candy-coloured clown they call the soundman ♫

john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

Not at all? I've heard reports from shows on this (UK) tour that the vocals were way too low. I'm sceptical about some of those reports 'cause the vocals aren't necessarily that discernable on initial listens on the recorded material, and when I saw them last week in Brighton the levels seemed more or less similar to the records. They went down a storm in any case.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 00:41 (nine years ago) link

A few years ago I saw a Shoppers show in a basement where the bassist's amp wasn't working at all, but rather than wait until she figured it out they played a solid third of the set without her while she messed around with it helplessly. Meredith Graves really doesn't seem like she sweats the details

Evan R, Sunday, 3 August 2014 01:17 (nine years ago) link

tbh I haven't heard anything by Perfect Pussy before, so maybe they are an instrumental band with a miming Bez dancing around in front, I did wonder.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 09:00 (nine years ago) link

This was how they were in Brighton

http://youtu.be/5t6sqV9ooXw

One of the things with the records is gradually hearing more of the lyrics I guess, it makes sense having the lyrics swimming in the middle of the mix. I've seen other clips of them live where the lyrics were more clearly audible though.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:48 (nine years ago) link

That's what I kept thinking I suppose, she was obviously putting a lot into singing or shouting or whatever she does, it was quite unsettling that there was no sound coming out, and most of the music seemed pretty interchangeable noise guitars so the lyrics must be part of the appeal I assume. Maybe the people at the front could hear her through proximity but the gig was in the back room of a pub so I wasn't that far away.

I started wondering if it was some kind of art statement about the female voice being drowned out by males or something.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:58 (nine years ago) link

The venue manager just posted on FB - She had her hand totally covering the mic (Sound tech and I were listening through the headphones on the desk, nae vocals)

So yeah, dunno what that was about, but it was a bit shit.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 14:31 (nine years ago) link

I saw them the other day in a basement and can attest that the either the mic wasn't working or the vocals were completely buried in the mix, such as it was. I heard vocals from other bands so I am assuming it's an aesthetic choice.
