another idjuts / theo parrish type filter abuse disco house thingy ... this is the first draft of the "euphoric house" mix i promised for the dj mix 2009 contest thread. instead we just ended up mashing together a bunch of jacking tracks with doubled-up basslines.

not sure if that's going to win any fans on ILX, so i am posting it here for feedback ... obviously we need to put it into audacity and clean up the bass levels a bit, we were jamming the EQ a bit beyond what common sense dictated. anyway ... i recommend not listening with the bass turned up, for now, unless you want a sort of disco-house meets black country techno type earbleed experience.

this was done live, in one take, four handed on two tables and one shitty mixer (still saving up for kp3 kaoss pad) with serato scratch live, so listen for the loops

joseph st. joseph vs dj moonship - dirty needles & dusty drawers

paul murphy & marc woolford - jazz room (spiritual south mix)
maas - powers of ten
jess & crabbe - spliff party 2000
wee papa girl rappers - heat it up (KMS acid mix)
ian drury - hit me with your rhythm stick (in flagranti edit)
mfon - ron hardy's revenge
todd terry - jumpin remix
aphrohead - body stronger
black science orchestra - save us (the jam)
maurizio - M5
dj garth & ETI - 20 minutes of disco glory (dj harvey remix)
paperclip people - the climax (12" edit)
chicago housing commision - the way i want ya
armand van helden - break da 80s
plastikman - kiropraktor
gene farris - confessions
sound stream - dance with me ... levels get painfully red here, sorry :-(
problem kids - our summer suite
artist unknown - ???
royal house - this shit iz 4 real
seven grand housing authority - love's got me high
random fuckery

yeah sorry about the levels on this one, esp the back end ... we were trying to do some daft punk type stuff with levels but w/o actually owning a band pass filter or a proper mixer. next time i'll watch the levels a bit more closely!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link

moonship, that mix is awesome; the levels are definitely no worse than rub-n-tug's campfire mix or something. hardly amateurish fuckery dude

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

however, THIS is some real amateurish fuckery...

DANCE AND SHAKE YOUR TAMBOURINE

a mountain of one - "can't be serious" (amo)
greg wilson - "cosmic dj delight" (rvng)
the bee gees - "love you inside out (cole medina edit)" (american standard)
bonar bradberry - "dungeons" (mindless boogie)
dr. john - "i walk on guilded splinters" (atco)
fleetwood mac - "tussskk (beard science extension)" (beard science)
universal robot band - "dance and shake your tambourine" (p & p)
grace jones - "williams blood (yam who? cosmic jam mix)" (bootleg)
soft rocks - "umut 2000" (soft rocks)
unknown artist - "sir mr. doctor to you" (golf channel)
hercules and love affair - "hercules' theme" (dfa)
noir désir - "le vent nous portera (rubber room rerub)" (mindless boogie)
the joubert singers - "stand on the word (larry levan mix)" (tirk)

thought i'd go for some feedback on my mix, too, as i'm considering entering this one in the ilm competition. it mostly just has a bunch of really obvious beardo choices i really dig, with minimal efforts being made on the dj trickery side of things. it's all vinyls though, recorded to a C-90 (hence the hiss- did this as a stylistic move but i'm not sure it works) and transferred to mp3

got some other, more housey mixes in the works for the competition though- maybe i'll even break out the kaos pad for some filter/effects fun eventually

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago) link

also- be prepared for some real shaky mixing on that last one

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

feelin this!

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:24 (fifteen years ago) link

cept i just hit one weirdly mixed section but overall 18 min and i'm cool w/ it

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yea... i meant there's shaky mixing throughout the mix i posted, not just the end of it ha

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

tusk section: nice

thx!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:00 (fifteen years ago) link

my big issue w/ my mix is that from gene farris pretty much on through MAW there's a lot of hard clipping going on from levels being wayyyyyy in the red. if you look at it in audacity the second half essentially looks like a solid brick of sound. so some of the beats are getting cut in the middle and you get a "galloping" effect that sounds like we've not matched the beats up right. this is particularly bad in the soundstream / problem kids mix.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, the kicks are getting cut in two because they're hard clipping at the peaks

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

but thanks for the compliment, will listen to yours soon

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

that is being burned and going in the car, stat

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago) link

my only feedback i can possibly give is that the second side is much *LOUDER* than the first, for some reason. can you fix that in audacity?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, pretty sure i could figure that out

glad you liked it!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 March 2009 06:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i recorded a billion mixes this weekend only to throw them all away because of a shitty mix or two :(

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

haitch I listened to yours on the train this morning, I think it's a sign of a good selection that I liked the first half (where I didn't know any of the tracks ahead of time) better than the second (where I have a few of those records)

dmr, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, i wondered if i was going a bit 'obvious' at the end there.

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago) link

nah I didnt mean it that way but I knew it was gonna sound like that

I meant just from looking at the tracklist I would consider the second half more up my alley but the first half was dope

threw that terje record in the mail btw, be on the lookout

dmr, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago) link

since we're havin roundtable what do you all think of this edit. first time I've tried to make somethin like this, I tried not to go overboard on the f/x

i will def check that out when i get home

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago) link

the blurb about that record on discogs sounds pretty crazy. brings to mind that joakim edit of jj cale for me, good job! you wouldn't want to go too OTT with the effects, any more and it might start sounding a bit cluttered.

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

thx! glad you dug it

dmr, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

just got around to listening to the edit. feeling it. it's def more edit feeling than the first one you played me. the subtle effects were a nice touch. that's all in audacity?
