I kind of find the half-assedness of the band to be part of the fun. It's very much a one-off, not meant to last kind of thing. Honestly it was a project I only enjoyed for a few hours and then forgot about, and I think that's about what it deserves. I know they sold out the Black Cat and all, but I don't think this is going to have a very long life or catapult them to higher heights.

Now, would this thing even get this kind of traction if not for Macaulay Culkin's name attached (and his presumable connections etc.), almost certainly not. But I can't really be mad at him for that.

Yeah, people might be buying tickets because they think it would be fun to see a huge icon from their childhood play songs about pizza and not because he’s killing the novelty music game with his wit and sick chops. I’d pay 15 bucks to see Mac tbh.

I will say I didn't realize the Black Cat still charges only $10 or $12 for so many shows. A lot of those bands would be pricier in NYC I think.

It is basically the public that is dissapointing me

Never underestimate the capacity of people to disappoint.

My sister went to that and she said it was a good time. My dad saw the VU in '68 at the Electric Factory but he doesn't remember much about it.

I think they have to play their set twice to achieve 30 minutes, unless they worked in a lengthy "Brother Ray's" jam or something.

grandavis, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 13:56 (ten years ago) link

Feel extra weird about this cos it's in a part of town w a big homeless population and nobody does any fundraisers for the homeless, it's always stuff for the art galleries. I hope they donate some pizzas to the homeless.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 20 March 2014 01:56 (ten years ago) link

There are 5 people in the band, and equally dividing 15 minutes between them gives each person 3 minutes of effort. And these people will be getting free food, free drugs, free places to stay, free hugs, etc. Meanwhile there are people who have been freezing all winter who will be ignored, or likely, exploited for iPhone photos and authenticity stories.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 20 March 2014 01:59 (ten years ago) link

I thought all the homeless lived in Carnegie Hall with pigeons.

This Is Not An ILX Username (LaMonte), Thursday, 20 March 2014 02:42 (ten years ago) link

People are literally walking by freezing homeless people to pay Richie Rich (and his friends) $15 to sing about pizza that he is getting for free!

For the record, Personal and the Pizzas only have a couple of pizza-themed songs.

Watercooler discussion of child stars today led to Macaulay Culkin, which gave me the opportunity to tell a 60-something-yr-old partner about Macaulay Culkin's pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band. We both agree that he seemed like a guy who had spent some quality time with "the drugs." All in all, it was a good watercooler sesh.

They released the PU Demos as a single for Record Store Day:

I picked up a copy, one of only two items I picked up for myself for RSD. It's amusing, but we all know that.

By that Friday, it felt like the entire Internet had turned against me. Hundreds of people, maybe thousands, maybe millions, thought I was a jerk. Hundreds told me so on Twitter, dozens on Facebook, a few over email, including a producer of The Drew Carey Show. - See more at: http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/issue-sections/features-issue-sections/15148/macaulay-culkin-pizza-underground-disaster/?fb=dd#sthash.UKGvC7qX.dpuf

This writer seems to have very little sense of scale when it comes to the internet.
