the we belong together comparison hit me upon hearing the first 30 seconds of the song; in the best way possible. not in the bad way.

i can't believe i am about to listen to this.

"Mimi being Mimi: Mariah Carey dropped her new single a little early today (February 12)! The diva posted “You’re Mine (Eternal),” an understated ballad co-written with Darkchild that fits right alongside the effortlessness of “Beautiful.” While not as immediately catchy as that song, this one’s got a nice, lilting beat and should keep fans satisfied about the direction she’s going in for this latest era.

Mimi reins in her powers for much of the song, making listeners wait for the payoff at the end, which of course is a triumphant whistle register to close out the track."

i don't know much about idolator and they've gotten it wrong in the past, but i don't disagree

surm, Friday, 14 February 2014 05:04 (ten years ago) link

wondering what the outlook for this single is going to be. anyone with any industry insight wit any predictions?

i wrote my letter to Mariah yesterday. i printed it on pink paper in brush script, and i included a handwritten note indicating that my handwriting was too treacherous to write it by hand. i put it in a nice gray envelope sealed with binder clips with "MC" written in big, bright red letters on the front. she will get it tonight when my friends hand-deliver it to her at her private concert in NYC.

surm, Monday, 17 February 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

Dunno about this song: my least favorite of the leaked tracks.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 February 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link

they're all official singles, not leaks, right?

i like it but haven't really been in any sort of mood where it might be revelatory since last week

lex pretend, Monday, 17 February 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

surprised, Alfred!

triumphant may not make the cut, according to rumor. and she might change the album title.

surm, Monday, 17 February 2014 19:09 (ten years ago) link

the only thing gross about the art of letting go the song is her use of the word "triflin'"

not so necessary. apart from that i'm v much behind the songs so far.

surm, Monday, 17 February 2014 19:25 (ten years ago) link

so apparently the only 2 songs being considered official singles are Beautiful and You're Mine, and as of yesterday:

Rhythmic:
Taking Off (#1):
4 new stations; 85 new spins
Spincrease:
40 stations playing; +177 spins (+24)

Urban:
Spincrease:
26 stations playing; +47 spins (+9)

Urban AC:
Spincrease:
28 stations playing; +30 spins (+1)

MARIAH CAREY – You’re Mine (Eternal): 5.087 (+ 0.731)

no idea what that means but i found it somewhere

surm, Monday, 17 February 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

Well, You're Mine dropped out of the US iTunes Top 100 Singles after just four days today, indicating that it might bomb just as hard as Triumphant, Almost Home and The Art of Letting Go did. No buyers for Old School Mariah anymore, it seems. Only the #freshapproach seems to work.

breastcrawl, Monday, 17 February 2014 21:36 (ten years ago) link

was "The Art of Letting Go" ever worked to radio, or even given any kind of radio debut anywhere like "Beautiful" was? i never got the sense it got any kind of push.

Waluigi Weingarten (some dude), Monday, 17 February 2014 21:40 (ten years ago) link

"#beautiful" was pretty retro itself. mariah refusing to concern herself with scoring hits worked so well on memoirs and i wish she wouldn't think about it so much.

lex pretend, Monday, 17 February 2014 23:42 (ten years ago) link

"#Beautiful" was retroish because Miguel incorporates retro elements in his very current style, and it was something #fresh for Mariah, unlike the We Belong Together Redux of "You're Mine". I mean, I like it (and I loved "The Art of Letting Go"), but the Trademark Old Formula is not going to give her any hits anymore if that's what she's hoping for. Sorry, surm!

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 21:05 (ten years ago) link

you don't think so? :( i think you're mine sounds pretty #fresh in terms of all the other shit on the radio. and the verse is pure #Beautiful, if downtempo, if you want to be honest.

art of letting go was never pushed for radio, it was just a "preview"

well, there's this - from the March 1 Billboard:
"You're Mine (Eternal)"
Hot 100: #88 (New entry)
Hot R&B Songs: #15 (New entry)
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #24 (New entry)
R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs: #12 (New entry)

Billboard Social 50: #38 (Last week: #41)

but you're saying itunes is a big projector?

surm, Saturday, 22 February 2014 01:06 (ten years ago) link

and are we speaking about a younger audience as a determining factor in all of this? /excuse my ignorance

surm, Saturday, 22 February 2014 01:08 (ten years ago) link

It's not off to the best start on radio either.

Greer, Saturday, 22 February 2014 01:41 (ten years ago) link

iTunes is definitely the main projector. The only way you can get a smash hit in the US without significant sales is when the song goes viral on YouTube a la "Harlem Shake" (so fingers crossed for the video I guess). Radio is not gonna go overboard on a song if nobody's buying it. And I would think it's the younger audience that predominantly buys single tracks, yes.
(And sales-wise it's the same all over the world: in most countries it was in the iTunes Top 100 for just a couple of days. For instance, Russia is the only European country where it's still in there.) #yesiwatchthecharts

breastcrawl, Saturday, 22 February 2014 16:37 (ten years ago) link

if you're talking about pop hits, yeah, iTunes is king. but R&B radio (and country radio, and rock radio) still pick up on songs all the time without digital sales being a factor.

MISTERSNRUB (some dude), Saturday, 22 February 2014 17:25 (ten years ago) link

Yes, talking about the Hot 100 here, not about genre and/or airplay charts.

breastcrawl, Saturday, 22 February 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

interesting. thanks guys.

surm, Sunday, 23 February 2014 17:31 (ten years ago) link

"you're mine (eternal)" totally clicked yesterday, all it needed was a momentary break from hectic life stuff and some sun streaming in through my window <33333

it is such a delicate crystal vase of a song, which makes the gradual realisation that it's an anguished and hopeless reverie all the more affecting

these are three pretty different singles so far, no idea what to expect from the album...

lex pretend, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 16:50 (ten years ago) link

it's a curious choice of single though, given that it seems like it belongs most on the almost entirely obvious single free memoirs

lex pretend, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 16:52 (ten years ago) link

it really is so pretty, and so her

surm, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 17:00 (ten years ago) link

it is, as are "#beautiful" and "the art of letting go", but i love that a) none of them are her resting on her laurels and churning out the kind of her people will automatically lap up, b) mariah invests being herself with this tremendously affecting hard-won air

lex pretend, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 17:08 (ten years ago) link

yeah she's definitely not going for it her own way

surm, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

i mean IS going for it her own way

http://www.fuse.tv/2014/04/mariah-carey-new-album-complete-guide

i think we knew all this but

Collaborators:

The album boasts a long list of collaborators (both rumored and confirmed) that could hopefully see Mimi taking some risks:

-Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins: A previous Mariah collaborator ("So Lonely" featuring Twista) produced single "The Art of Letting Go."

-Q-Tip: The Tribe Called Quest frontman told us he was working on the album in August 2012.

-Jermaine Dupri: A producer working with Mariah since the '90s ("Always Be My Baby," "Sweetheart," "We Belong Together"). Watch their undeniably chemistry in this Fuse News interview.

-David Morales: The dancefloor maestro who's served remixes like the "My All (Morales 'My' Club Remix)," featured on Mimi's official The Remixes album.

-Bryan-Michael Cox: A producer with two singles off her comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi ("Shake It Off" and "Don't Forget About Us").

-Hit-Boy: A new Mimi collaborator, rumored to have crafted a track titled "Thirsty." He's risen to A-list producer status with tracks like Kanye West & Jay Z's "N****s in Paris," Beyonce's "XO" and Lil Wayne's "Drop the World."

-The-Dream: A recent favorite of Mariah who worked on her last No. 1, "Touch My Body," and co-produced almost every track on her Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel LP.

-Mike WiLL Made It: R&B-pop's go-to guy, (Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop," Ciara's "Body Party") is a new collaborator for Mimi, confirmed in a Billboard interview.

-R. Kelly: While Mariah teased a studio snap with Kellz saying "working on a new song!" we're wondering if it's for the Chicago crooner's Trapped in the Closet series. No official word yet.

-Loris Holland: The singer tweeted she was in the studio with Holland, who worked on her past albums such as 1995's Daydream and 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi.

-Fabolous: While posting on Instagram about a night in the studio, Mariah posted a pic that she was "doing a different record now" and tagged the Brooklyn rapper. The collaborated on the track "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" off Mimi's Glitter soundtrack.
