xp waiting for inevitable PS4/PSV super holiday bundle

i missed the ID Reparations, ah, it'll go on sale again. surprised they didn't just give the PS3 version free on + also

I have bought/PS+-ed so many games in the last month. But my PS3 time at the moment is pretty much divided 50/25/25 Skyrim (pretty sure at this point that this game never, ever ends, but I'm okay with that)/Prototype (maybe the funnest game ever)/(other). I've gotten a lot of good suggestions from various ILG threads, though. Looking forward to plunging into Deadly Premonition soon.

Found a pretty cool website (Playstation Lifestyle, although I'm sure there are a ton more just like it) to keep up with all the PS store/PS+ shenanigans. Just acquired pretty much every Tomb Raider game ever made for about $15 total thanks to their current sale. There's a similar GTA sale coming soon. I'm just gonna sit back and snatch up all of these PS1/PS2 classics whenever they fall to $5 (or $2.50, in a lot of cases).

Fez is coming to PSN later this month, FYI.

Didn't walk to talk spoilers yet as I'm not done yet, but I spent a good chunk of this weekend binging on The Last of Us. Yeah, really good, intense stuff. Off the bat the dark tone fits the constant stream of grotesque murders better than Uncharted did, though ironically this is primarily a stealth game (unless they added a lot more stealth to Uncharted 2/3 which I haven't played yet).

getting "lone survivor" for free is a lot like getting a free punch in the nuts. wow does this game fucking suck

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 17 March 2014 19:29 (ten years ago) link

I guess I'm glad I haven't downloaded it! the e-nutpunch ain't my bag, so to speak.

indie games never hit that weird b movie itch thing for me though - and hey frog fractions and icarus proudbottom and that turrell retrospective and (CONTROVERSIAL) fez are awesome! i think console indie is where my hate really lies.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 17 March 2014 22:00 (ten years ago) link

not that i disagree w/ the pick (i v much like fez) but i don't see how it isn't like the platonic ideal of console indie?

I'm dling it now, no idea if it does anything on ps3

19 streaming games, not all crap! Service works shockingly well, actually

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Friday, 4 April 2014 06:11 (ten years ago) link

Never got any notice after the invite to install anything...

How are you guys managing your HD space w/PS+? I'm trying to keep a little bit of space free just for performance sake, but I stopped being able to add new games to the HD months ago, I just queue them up via the website now. I end up clearing old PS+ games to make room for the occasional sale purchases. The crunch! It would probably help if I actually got through a game more than one per two months

Not sure I really want to bother buying a new HD for it at this point in the life cycle, probably better off putting that money towards a PS4

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 15:27 (ten years ago) link

it's hella cheap and highly recommended. also easy to do!

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 16:09 (ten years ago) link

Did you backup your stuff to an external HD and then copy it to the new drive after installation? Or just redownload everything?

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

i did this and made the mistake of transferring everything to an external HD. if download speeds are ok for you and you have unlimited broadband then delete all the big games & redownload them, transferring them back from an external HD takes far too long. just backup your saves etc.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 7 April 2014 16:32 (ten years ago) link

I can re-download, but I don't really want to re-download 225GB of games, and do all the reinstalls as well
Plus probably spending $75-100 on a 1TB laptop drive. but i'm really tempted right now

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 16:45 (ten years ago) link

backing up the HD and then retransferring it to the new HD after install, if you don't mind running it as a background thing, is not that big of a deal. It might take two or three days but it's a one time deal and reasonably easy... just time consuming. start the transfer to a spare HD before you go to work, fix whatever errors there are when you get home and install the new drive, then transfer the data back over when you go to sleep, fix whatever errors are there when you wake up and then clean up when you get home.

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 16:58 (ten years ago) link

Just to confirm: you can't actually play any games from an external HD, correct? I've seen conflicting info. Because I'm running out of room already. I've been taking full advantage of the deep weekly discounts and hoarding cheap downloaded games and would love to keep giving Sony money to this end but they seem, in many ways, to be a deeply stupid company. I don't wanna be constantly shuffling stuff around so once I've run out of playable drive space, I might have to get a lot more frugal.

Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Monday, 7 April 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link

old lunch: yeah, that's exactly my attitude, I'm not buying as much as I was because I know I can't even fit new games on the HD! unfortunately and no, you can't play off an external HD - ironically, the Wii U is the only one with a system that can use external USB HDs that way.

forks: yeah, I'm much more down with that plan. clogging up our home's wifi for days isn't the best option for me, I'd prefer to set it and forget it. I need to buy a new external for backups anyway, might as well do this all in one shot i suppose

what do you mean by errors? there are transfer errors going back and forth?

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

i don't think external HD allows for games but a 500 gig laptop drive makes a big difference in space... i've heard mixed things about terabyte drives though so caveat emptor
http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/syltguides/fullview/R3J292OYJK7HAF <- i used this guide to get it done and it's worked fine.

here's a $51 amazon prime ready 500gig internal drive that many commenters sign off on as ps3 ready.

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link

by "Errors" i mean whatever pop up issues ("do you want to transfer files with properties etc etc") that stop the process from running after it's been up for ten minutes. standard data transfer bullshit.

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link

buy a cheap external drive for the transfer and then wipe it when you're done and use if for PC backup.

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:10 (ten years ago) link

oh, gotcha. so I do have to keep tabs on the PS3 during this process, noted
I am leaning to 1TB considering how quick I filled this out (not even a year!), but in a year or two I will probably migrate to PS4, so 500GB ain't a bad option to consider. depends on what deals I can scrounge up

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:20 (ten years ago) link

its possible to set it forget it when downloading btw.
choose the option to download automatic updates during the night, start to download games via the store & switch the console off.
while you sleep the PS3 will download the games in your queue & crucially install them for you.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:23 (ten years ago) link

you don't so much have to keep tabs on the ps3 as just make sure it ain't fuckin' up.
the 1 tb option is apparently problematic both in terms of size of drive and the way the ps3 is set up so maybe read up a little online?

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:26 (ten years ago) link

will do, will do

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

So is it possible to at least drag & drop the actual game from the PS3 to an external drive even if it isn't playable from external storage? It's nice that Sony at least saw fit to give us the option of doing a full backup, but since I can just redownload everything (including saves, thanks to PS+) in the event of a major catastrophe, I'm honestly more interested in the short term in just being able to store downloaded games somewhere local. Because I'll probably just keep buying super cheap games and not downloading them until I've finished playing something else (which I will then presumably have to delete). So stupid.

Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

i've done the downloading overnight thing in the past (though it feels random on whether games will actually get installed or not after download), it's just not currently optimal in my household to do long file transfers/internet use of any kind, even overnight - someone's always online

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

xp I hadn't actually thought of that, but that's not a bad idea to use a backup external just for that purpose. Still, 250GB ain't cutting it no more

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

my backlog is like twenty to thirty games deep on my ps3 alone dude, so don't guilt yourself

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

same here, sadlol

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:48 (ten years ago) link

i mean, i have Tokyo Jungle on disc, man. ON DISC

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

make that forty to fifty deep if we're counting discs.

I made a grave mistake with my balloon at the end (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:50 (ten years ago) link

My problems are a) being new to PS3 and super excited about it, b) ready access to free PS+ games and scads of <=$5 games via the weekly sales, and c) inaugurating my PS3 ownership by playing games that I would later come to realize were among the most time-intensive on the system (e.g. Skyrim, Just Cause 2, Minecraft), thereby making the inevitable backlog all the more backloggy.

Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Monday, 7 April 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link

US PSN having a $0.99 sale this weekend that includes Tokyo Jungle. buy Tokyo Jungle!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

Link: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/flash-sale/cid=STORE-MSF77008-9_FLASHSALE2014

I'm really tempted to get almost everything here, even double-backlogging some via multiplatform (Tales of Monkey Island, Back to the Future) or just paying the $1 for digital convenience (Tokyo Jungle). Also some curiosities like Echochrome II, Super Stardust, Crash Commando... even Jurassic Park which is supposed to be bad, but $1!

I'd say Retro/Grade is worth the $0.99 if you're in the mood for a decent though mediocre rhythm game

Should've known Puppeteer would go free within six months, and before I got to play it. Oh well!
Happy about Skullgirls: Encore, I liked the PC beta I tried back in the summer.
