this is a super interesting record imo - lotsa sweet 7th chords all over which coupled with the aggression/blown-out vocals makes for a good listen - remind me of unwound kinda?

Relentless has a negative connotation. Yes I see your point. I guess I am a family man now.

upon further review, i am creeping to the "dig it" side of the fence about the first 15 minutes of this and love the last 6-8 minutes. i didn't even make it to the last part the first time i listened.
was a strange little record.

It's not bad! Though it's weird which bands seem to get randomly picked out of underground rock for acclaim... like this seems like a band I would see at a bar and be like I'm digging this but there are probably 1000 bands that are just as cool

post here the name of a young noisy rock band that could/should be just as big as Perfect Pussy and I'll explain why PP is probably better.
― Mark, Saturday, 15 March 2014 16:24 (ten years ago) link
"noisy rock" much like "experimental music" or is another dress-up box re-enactment society.don't get it. you need a whipcrack tight drummer & better tunes to pull this off. all i hear is a rushed plod with shouting.thrilled skinny.

at the risk of stepping beyond anything I know about, I heard two hardcore-sounding tracks by this band and thought they sounded like Melt Banana, but less aggressive. Then I heard an indie-rock sounding song, and didn't like it. Am I missing something, or are there a ton of bands who sound like this, 99% of which are not and never will be famous?
― Dominique, Monday, 17 March 2014 22:04 (ten years ago) link
I've tried really hard to like this record, especially in light of all the people insinuating that I'm a bad person and/or bad critic if I don't, and it still... doesn't do anything much for me. it's not awful, it just doesn't distinguish itself. it sounds like a thousand vague memories of bands I've seen at death by audio and started to check my phone ten minutes in, whose names even blur together at this point. speaking of, the band name still bugs me, the same way most cutesy-congratulatory-shocking names do.

not sold on the sound. i like that scuzzy, raw over-driven sound sometimes; just not working here, especially with the shrieking vocals. but the lyrics i've seen, mostly from the ep but a few songs from the debut, are fierce.
i want to read this album more than i want to hear it.

OK actually cos I love the songs, the noise interludes, and bc they're not called "Melt Banana". Also afaik their name isn't meant to be cutesy/shocking/anything other than affriming

You're missing the thing that twentysomething critics have and thirtysomethings willfully ignore, and that's the idea that 285 Kent was "important" not just a place for millionaires and corporations to harvest talent and enthusiasm at the lowest level under the auspices of "DIY"

but also it really does seem like only rock critics are fucking with this band, no?

be interested to know what attendance is like at their shows, which is a more important metric than YouTube/Spotify/record sales/unqualifiable buzz
― (or if you must, "data") (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:44 (ten years ago) link
How many tracks did they have on Spotify prior to the release of the new album? Looks like a grand total of one. So 500 followers (it's actually closer to 600 according to Spotify, but don't let that get in the way of whatever point is trying to be made here) sounds like a decent amount.
― Position Position, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:48 (ten years ago) link
they feel to me like a band whose 'natural' record sales would be somewhere in the three-figure mark, and I mean absolutely nothing disparaging by that

Lampy, the idea that 285 Kent was "important" and not just "another totally fine DIY space in a country filled with 100 totally fine DIY spaces located in parts of the country where people don't have inflated senses of self-worth" was a narrative invented and put forward by Pitchfork. Once they established that narrative, Pitchfork used it constantly to wag the dog on bands they liked, and got places like Topshop and Doc Martens to put up $$$$$$ for an ostensibly DIY venue. All the people writing about 285 Kent bands for Pitchfork/Stereogum/et al are under 30 and probably wildly underpaid so no one says "Hey, this is just like X-Ray Spex/Harry Pussy/Melt Banana but shittier and lazier" and instead approaches this with the same youthful enthusiasm I had for, like, Rhymesayers when I was that age.

I saw them the other day in a basement and can attest that the either the mic wasn't working or the vocals were completely buried in the mix, such as it was. I heard vocals from other bands so I am assuming it's an aesthetic choice.

I love the energy but my attitude toward the vocals varies - I think the effect works amazingly well on "Interference Fits" when the first thing you really understand is "since when do we say yes to love?"
