I'm in LA for 3 months as of Thursday. Being a Londoner, I never learned to drive, which I've been told makes the city a little difficult to navigate. I'll be staying in Mount Washington, pretty close the Gold Line, am I right in thinking if I want to explore then the best bet is Gold Line down to Union Station/Downtown and set off in whichever direction from there?

Unfortunately I'll probably spend most of my time working, but I'm sure I'll get the odd day off here and there. If anybody knows of anything I should see or anywhere I simply *have* to go while I'm over- please let me know!

If I'm free I'll def be checking out LA psyche fest, and prob Factory Floor Apr 15th at The Echo...

Oh I see you just had an earthquake, hope everybody is okay!

Crackle Box, Monday, 17 March 2014 14:15 (ten years ago) link

In brief: yeah, Gold Line to Union is a good start, but you'll need to use the bus lines from there to get out all the way to the coast (if that's part of your goal). There are a couple of Metro Rapid lines which will be very handy for you there.

As for what exactly to see...well, what are you interested in? LA's got a lot of stuff, give us some focus!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 March 2014 14:32 (ten years ago) link

- Anything that's a bit under the radar / local / interesting music + art wise, I guess. Is there much of a improv/electronics scene there? Any venues to check out to see local DIY type stuff?

- The parks /areas around LA- are there any that are easy to get to and from same day that you'd recommend?

- Beach with nice seafood and not too busy would be cool.

Crackle Box, Monday, 17 March 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

there's a p big improv/electronics scene yeah

in terms of under-the-radar music venues: there's the wulf and handbag factory downtown, church on york in highland park, pehrspace in echo park, human resources in chinatown, the tuesdays at monk space series in koreatown, pieter in lincoln heights...

USC's student radio station is doing a daylong festival with DJ Rashad, Sun Araw, and a bunch of others. It's free, you just have to rsvp on eventbrite (linked on the facebook page).

two weeks pass...

If I was in town, I'd probably go see Jerry Lewis and Maureen O'Hara:

Sorcerer is well worth seeing in a theater, and Friedkin is an entertaining yakker.

Now that I have discovered Airbnb, I am pondering which nabes to aim for on my next SoCal jaunt. (Maybe early summer, maybe Decemberish)

There's a small, but very cool looking bloom going on now at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve (FB link). It's not far from town and the weather is nice. We went over the weekend and it was worth the drive up.

I live about a mile away from that oil pipeline rupture along San Fernando Road this morning and then later on my way to work the northbound side of the 5 was on fire.

i hope the jandek show gets moved somewhere else.

nurse with attitude (get bent), Monday, 19 May 2014 04:49 (nine years ago) link

that's a shame, seemed like it could've been a nice space for certain things.

glad the posh isolation shows were moved tho, can't imagine those shows would have been as good in the church, had a great time at that last night. sexdrome + puce mary both killed it.

Crackle Box, Monday, 19 May 2014 05:01 (nine years ago) link

church on york i guess only had a few permits for shows while the owners were waiting for the process to complete, but they were holding shows all the time nonetheless and were selling alcohol w/o a permit.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 19 May 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

Ha, well, at least I can say I saw one show there.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 May 2014 23:14 (nine years ago) link

the venue had its problems beyond the management (punishingly uncomfortable pews) but it was a good space.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 00:14 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I liked it, and there weren't any pews for Loop, just open floor. Only thing I would have done if possible is more a/c but that's pretty much ANY venue except the Echoplex.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 May 2014 00:25 (nine years ago) link

anyone going to liars at the fonda tonight?

nurse with attitude (get bent), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

very preliminarily pondering an LA-SD(-SF?) trip around July 3-13 if health permits, anything shakin' then? maybe Ned can drive me to an Angels game, j/k.

also I'm willing to stay in a no-frills Hollywood dump again, but do you think i'd be bored downtown? (obv need to be near bus/train)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 17 June 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link

found a decent room abt 3 blocks from H'wood & Vine, so that's that.

X is playing at the Roxy? Will Exene get me in free if I bring a gun?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

also I guess I should get my friend in the Valley to drive me to the Getty Villa one morning? Only got to Santa Monica and Venice at dusk last time, Malibu not at all.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 June 2014 14:50 (nine years ago) link

can't say for sure, but this midnight horror at Cinefamily on the 11th might be appealing:

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/friday-night-frights/#friday-night-frights-the-changeling

What is the capacity of that place?

Also, I should go to both Getty branches, right?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

cinefamily holds a couple hundred or so i think?

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

i haven't been to the getty villa, but the getty on the 405 is lovely.

Neil Patrick Haggerty (get bent), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 19:37 (nine years ago) link

The Villa is also nice, but visit before Europe reclaims all its plundered antiquities.

nickn, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

both nice, but if you have time for only one, see the 405.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

also am i sposed to get only a martini at Musso & Franks, or a steak as well?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 5 July 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

both iirc

and Cinefamily definitely holds a few hundred - if you get there early enough, though, you can get a sofa in the front, not just a regular seat

(a couple of times last year I was non-early enough to end up on a folding stool in the aisle)

Taking the Coaster up this morning... what's with this 89 degrees shit?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 July 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

I'm only going on information received (though plan to conduct my own research in Oct), but am bemused at this prejudice against a slow-roasted lamb leg or tender kangaroo loin!

Capt. Steve Tufts oversaw a fire engine that responded to the blaze from an LAFD station on 51st Street in South LA.

"It reminded me of the '80s," Tufts said. "When you got that bare wood. It burns. It burns good."

Saw Nico Vega as an opener a couple years back... LA is good at producing these kinds of schlocky-alternative bands that are histrionic enough to hold your attention for a bit. Didn't mind them, but I couldn't remember any of the songs.
