I spent a year roaming around Europe, and Switzerland was my favorite place of all (second place: the Greek Islands). Hanging out in Gimmelwald, hiking in the alps... it was the best.

Swiss people are really great. Even the punk rockers I met in Switzerland were courteous and respectful. People seemed excited about having the opportunity to slow down to less pedestrians pass by. It was a pretty big difference from, oh, I don't know... Oakland?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I find people in the Bay Area to be far more polite than most Europeans!

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Have you ever lived near 40th and MLK, or worked in the Financial District? Yikes.

Europeans were very polite to me, in general, even in Paris and London.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I live near Ashby and MLK/work downtown/SoMa, and I'm originally from London. Maybe people are nice to me because I'm "different"!

My Switzerland trip is coming up quick. What about money? Am I supposed to take American cash money and get it changed when I get there? Or before? Or just get traveler's checks? I am totally clueless about this.

Uh, can I use my University of Wisconsin Credit Union atm card in Europe? 'Cause that would be great.

There are some deals on travel tickets you can only get outside Switzerland. There is a good ticket which includes travel from airport to and from any destination in Switzerland and 50% off all other travel (bus, train, boat etc.) once you are there. myswitzerland.com should have details.

Good Things About Switzerland:

Compared to Haiti, the zombie problem in Switzerland is very manageable.

If you have a lot of money, then it will feel very welcome in Switzerland, and the Swiss will go out of their way to try to make it feel at home.

It's a good place to buy a bumper sticker that says "I brake for fallen rocks" - in three languages, no less!

You're never far from a bank.

No unsightly litter in the streets. Littering is strictly cordoned off into special 'trash opportunity zones' and confined to a few hours in the early morning on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

You will not be asked to particiapte in the Euro-song contest.

They were in the Eurovision Song Contest just two days ago! It's Italy who don't join in.

Since my cell phone presumably won't work in Switzerland, I have to buy a watch. I hear they make watches there...I guess the logical thing to do would be to wait and buy one there?

Also, according to the information I have gathered (from my dad), Switzerland is NOT in the EU. Right?

correct, so no paying with euros.. it's swiss francs, or something.

Didn't they vote to join in the European Community?

oh you probably won't have time for any sight-seeing, but if you have, you might want to see Bellinzona. A dusty, but beautiful, old town with walls & castles and stuff like that.

Sweet! Do you have any idea how far it is from Ascona? I think most days I don't have a gig until 10:00 pm, so I'm hoping to make some day trips.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't know.. i think it's reasonably close (for an American, I've always been told yanks are used for travelling distances) anyway..

ok..
It's about 1 to 1.5 hour by train.

http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2017/12/switzerland-prepared-civilizational-collapse.html

More than any other country, Switzerland’s ethos is centered around preparing for civilizational collapse.

...

The Swiss have been tunneling the Alps for hundreds of years creating innumerable secret hideaways for people and stores.

As a further example of how ridiculously well prepared the Swiss are for any and all threats, there are things like hidden hydroelectric dams built inside of unmarked mountains so that in the event of mass bombings, they’ll still have electricity from these secret facilities. And, remember, these are the things the Swiss government has let us know about. It is thought that there are probably more fortifications and hidden goodies scattered about the country’s landscape.
