Seattle! How is it now? Are there jobs? Should I move there?

This was Gregoire's mistake.. along with a dull campaign overall.. and she barely became governor by literally a hair. (The verdict is still out for a possible reelection effort, but the chances of it happening are dying more every day it doesn't happen. Then again, look what happened in California re: Gray Davis.)

Funny that Coors is listed in that Stranger story as supporting the bill. Micros0ft less liberal than Coors shocker!

nickn (nickn), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:30 (nineteen years ago) link

The democratic party is surging here right now, largely as a result of W and the contested governor's race. I have been to some local party meetings and I think general energy and organization is improving. You'll find plenty of DKos types here (Ok, "plenty" might be an overstatement).

Donut's right, though, that for a long time there has been a sense of apathy in Seattle, a tendency taking things for granted. Traditionally, it's just not been a very "political" state. But that's changing out of neccesity, so it's an interesting time to be here.

As for the chances of the election getting overturned shrinking, well, the trial starts in May. We'll see what happens, but I'm not sure that time passing is making it any less likely; it just means I worry about it less.

Late to the thread here, but it's 74 and sunny here today, and there is NO BETTER PLACE TO BE.

Well, just because some spineless asshat manager at MS caves in to some local freaky preacher man, doesn't make Microsoft more "liberal" than Coors, necessarily. It's The Stranger's M.O. to make really shocking sensational headlines, and then have the story be far more detailed and less shocking than the headline.

I don't know how liberal or not Coors is.. but Microsoft hasn't stopped supporting same-sex/domestic partner benefits for its gay and lesbian full-time employees here. Microsoft basically did what any corporation these days would do when confronted by an angry mob of wacky fundamentalists: "OK, we'll pretend we're giving in to these wackos just to shut them up, even if it makes a few liberal wackos mad... the less trouble, the better". Capitalism has always bred this "neutral to the outside/progressive on the inside" standard in major corporations in western Washington state. It's been the M.O. for years. Had Washington Mutual been the target instead of Microsoft, they would have done the same thing, probably. Just wait a few months, now that the fundies "got their wish" and the gay civils right bill didn't pass, and all of this will be forgotten. Business as usual. :/

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

(sorry, LESS liberal.. on the very top sentence..)

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I should also add that The Stranger is hardly the only paper to pull that technique of shocking headlines/more detailed less shocking story thing. It's pretty universal, actually. Time magazine is especially guilty of it.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

But MS had nothing to lose! Bah.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Except a lot of fundies work at MS as well... they exist here too, you know. And they may have caused more trouble. :/

Oh, because programmer types are so hard to replace these days.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 22 April 2005 20:57 (nineteen years ago) link

It's not a case of programmers being expendable.. it's a matter of MS trying (and in this case failing) to deter bad PR.

Trust me.. I thought it was an especially stupid thing for Smith to do myself -- especially, now that the Stranger has narrowed in on the large carcass to exploit it and give MS shit about it... and MS deserves it.

But I still love love love Seattle and when I am done with NYC I am moving there or Georgia. Don't move to DC. You will grow depressed and hate yourself every morning.

Anyway, back to the MS/Hutcherson story, can someone get the cane for this fucker already?:

In any case, Hutcherson said it wasn't the end of his efforts. Even though the bill failed yesterday, he plans to visit two other companies that endorsed it to express his displeasure. Hutcherson would not name the businesses. Companies that endorsed the bill include Boeing, Nike, Washington Mutual, Vulcan and Hewlett-Packard.

Great.

Another mini-sideshow surrounding the bill involved rumors that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle, which has opposed such bills for years, was neutral this year.

Interesting.

Anyway, sorry for polluting Daria's thread with this gar-bahge.

i'm upset that these suburban-style churches are now popping up in the city. for example whatever congregation now occupies what was once the king cat theater (near the old UA site) and this one in ballard near my work which used to be doc freemans (before the last move and before the going out of business - it's near the bridge).

i guess what bugs me is that i feel a church should have more class... a converted retail store doesn't really set the right vibe for eternal salvation. some of these big suburban joints are hard to distinguish from targets or wal-marts, at least from a distance

eleven months pass...
I'm moving to Seattle soon (as in, this coming weekend). I'm staying at a friend's place for a week, and during that week I'm going to spend all my time looking for a place to live. So far, I've been looking at Craig's List, Seattle Weekly classifieds, Stranger classifieds, and seattlerentals.com. Can anyone recommend any other places to look for apartment rentals (I'm looking for a one-bedroom or a studio)?

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 07:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Apartments.com and the PI classifieds maybe, but they will probably just repeat what you're finding in the other sources. Looking around in the neighborhoods where you'd like to live will generally turn stuff up. What parts of town are you looking at? I found an apartment on Queen Anne and one in Belltown by driving by, and the houses we rented in Madrona through the Weekly and the PI classifieds.

Also, welcome to Seattle!

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks! I'm looking for a place in Capitol Hill. I've only been to Seattle once, and only then for a couple days, so I'll probably look a little at some other neighborhoods, too, but Capitol Hill is the main area I'm looking at right now.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Our daughter lives on Cap. Hill - I'll ask how she found her place. Walking around the neighborhood might be the best way. I think there are community bulletin boards in the Safeway on John and the QFC on Broadway, too. Also, possible resource at Seattle Central Community College, south on Broadway from the intersection at John.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i live on Cap. Hill and the best way is to walk around and figure out where you want to live. anything west of 12th is basically a nightmare of no parking and hordes of meth/heroin junkies trying to break into your car before it gets towed. i'd recommend looking in the obvious places like the Seattle Time classifieds/coffee shop bulletin boards and craigslist. The Stranger also has apartment listings. don't bother with the area west of 12th though, it really is the pit of dispair.

nicely (brother loves dub), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

If you're resilient about Capitol Hill, nicely and Jaq both OTM.

I wouldn't call anything west of 12th the pit of despair, but you are in highly-overpriced territory. Anything between 13th and 19th is probably a little nicer and cheaper actually.

Also, don't be afraid to go south of Pike St. Some friends of mine are super happy to have found a place around 17th and Union. (They moved from Austin, and apparently they bringing tons of their friends along to move here as well... which isn't surprising, given both are both smallish, centralized, tech-y cities... surely the same is happening with PDX as well.)

If you don't smoke, don't have pets, and don't mind a carpeted pad, your task will be a gazillion times easier to find a one-bedroom rental, speaking from experience.

btw, Gregoire obviously remained governor, and that bill to ban workplace, housing purchase, etc. discrimination based on sexual orientation passed this year, with full Microsoft support... weird how much has changed.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, daughter's opinion is use Craigslist as a starting point, but you'll spot lots of other available apartments on your way to look at the craigslistings. The closer you get to 15th, the more $$. The First Hill area (souther of Pike, toward the hospitals and sometimes called Pill Hill) seems to have lots of studio/1 bed apts - I've had a few friends living in that area that liked it lots, though none live there now. Agreed about the parking on Cap. Hill, but Seattle's also a town you don't really need a car in - good bus system and Flexcar.

A. Lingbert, you'd mentioned upthread that you would consider other neighborhoods once you got to town, so here are some others to check out: lower queen anne, belltown, ballard, freemont, wallingford. they range from very central to more neighborhoody and outlying, and from equally expensive to a bit cheaper.

the advice to walk and look around is the best thing mentioned on this thread. a great apartment next to my house sat open for 6 months because all the (lazy) landlords did was put a sign up on one utility pole.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

All terrific neighborhoods (good call Jergins!) - we lived on the fringe of lower Q.A. and Belltown - across from Caffe Minnie's and diag from Tiny Biggs. It would be so great to live there again (someday...) Looks like I'll be spending 2 weeks of Aug (+Bumbershoot weekend) in town though, so that will have to do for now :)

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yes! I found a yummy carnivorous place over in Madrona - Cremant. Excellent charcuterie. But I think Aug might be time for huge tiki drinks at Ohana, something like that. I saw the PNB on the Bumbershoot lineup! Is this a first?

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 23:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure what the deal is, actually. Since the ballet season ended, I moved next door to the Intiman. I'm just hoping that since I'm on the grounds working during Bumbershoot, I get in free.

As for a fap, it'd be fun to have one outside. play ping pong or croquet and drinkdrinkdrink. We must welcome A Lingbert!

Lower Queen Anne = favorite neighborhood I've ever lived in anywhere. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I was right by the Seattle Center and a block away from Tower, near a lot of terrific restaurants and coffee shops, just lovely. It's cheaper than Cap Hill and there's plenty to do, plus it has Larry's Market, the best grocery store in the city, and a 24-hour drugstore on top of it, plus a couple all-night eateries. Plus plus plus. I miss it intensely.

I'm going to be in Seattle this weekend. Doing the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride.

I used to live in a big old haunted house in Madrona, but it's been years since I've been back. It'll be nice to be back.

mikef (mfleming), Thursday, 13 July 2006 04:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, this thread took off! Sorry I haven't been more responsive, but between work and getting everything packed/trashed/donated/sold/cleaned/etc before the move, I haven't had much time to check ILE.

Lots of great suggestions. I was only in Seattle for about 2 days last month, so I obviously didn't get to see everything, and my impressions of the areas are fairly vague. I decided on Captol Hill as my first choice based on some positive things I'd heard/read about it and the little of it that I saw. What sold me (at the time, anyway), I think, was the neighborhood leading down to Washington Park (I'm pretty sure I have my geography straight here, but maybe not). It looked so pleasant and green, but maybe that's a super-expensive area that I won't be able to afford anyway.

I thought Ballard was a nice area, but maybe a little far from things and maybe a little too tranquil. I liked Fremont a lot, but it seemed like a place to visit rather than live in. Upper Queen Anne seemed generally uninteresting and overpriced (though nice views, of course), but I'll definitely have to give Lower Queen Anne a good look. I don't know if I saw much of Belltown or Wallingford at all.

I'm also thinking I might have to finally break down and get a cell phone. If I'm going to be wandering around most of the time when I get there, I don't want to miss any calls from prospective rentals. 28 years I've avoided having one, but I suppose maybe it's time. Where does someone even shop for cell phones? Malls? My friend says he likes Sprint. I guess they have Sprint stores, don't they?

But yeah, I'd totally be down to FAP should one materialize.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Thursday, 13 July 2006 06:43 (seventeen years ago) link

My sister lives in Madison Park, which seems right for her like for quiet but, er, funky (where in Seattle isn't?). I don't dislike Capitol Hill, but have never seen the big deal, and my like for the U District would probably lead me to consider Wallingford or perhaps-too-far-flung Ravenna (Laurelhurst?). But I'm an outsider, so whaddoiknow? On my last trip, I only saw a bit of the somewhat-alien-to-me Lower Queen Anne, but I guess in hindsight I see appeal in the convenience of (sleepy) commercial life, plus Bay views and Seattle Center walking paths. Morning sun (what morning sun?) vs. afternoon sun.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 July 2006 07:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, Lower QA seems more urban (almost Hollywoodish?) than your typical residential Seattle nabe, but am I right that more urban there paradoxically translates to lower density?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 July 2006 07:29 (seventeen years ago) link

mikef - we lived in the big ole house in Madrona referred to locally as "the castle" - huge stucco, grand staircase/2 story bay window, next to catholic church parking lot. I don't know if it was haunted, though that would've explained some things. Good luck on the ride.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 13 July 2006 11:34 (seventeen years ago) link

gab, not sure what you mean by Hollywood-ish... Sure, there are a lot of people who live there who are more prone to yuppiebling .. then again, if we're making crass generalizations, there are lots of people in Cap Hill that are willing to hipster-tight-pants-bedhead themselves out, too.

I mean, the Funhouse, Seattle Center, Larry's, Easy Street, Pagliacci, Racha, Roti, Blue Water Grill, Mirabeau, Ladro, post office, Bamboo Garden, McMennamins, more thai... all within easy walking distance. I don't think Hollywood allows for this many places to be this walkable from one place -- having grown up in west part of L.A.

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Thursday, 13 July 2006 13:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I love living in Fremont, but you're going to get a TERRIBLE impression of it if you revisit it now, because the Fremont Bridge is being torn up right now, and will be under construction until early next year. However, area landlords haven't quite felt the burn of the temporary lack of attractability of this quite yet.. Maybe retry by end of year if you visit there and really enjoy it and want to move there.. that's also a good time to move (crappy weather, many people move out, therefore easy to find a place anywhere anyway), but also I'm guessing rents won't be as high.. especially in the QA side of Fremont, where I live (and take advantage of slightly lower rent, without being bottlenecked by the under-construction drawbridge when trying to get to downtown)

Then again, you said you'd rather visit than live there, and that's a very fair assessment of Fremont.. especially now. (I'm just riding out the construction issues)
