Even at FAP's, I'm Jel. It's cool, I have this disembodied sense of self sometimes. "Jel? Who's that? Oh it's me"

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 8 May 2003 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

i am toying with the idea of changing my name to "Peepy" for 3 days.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 8 May 2003 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

This is why I settled on Trayce - its effectively my real name, only spelt weird. So at FAPs and the like I'm still called by my name. The amusing thing is now everyone spells my real name this way, I mean even work colleagues and my grandad in birthday cards and stuff. Maybe I should change it by deed poll.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:46 (twenty years ago) link

I always think of oops/buttch as a interjection-onomatopoeia combination. Like some dude is carrying something breakable like a baby or a drugged kitten and he trips and drops it and you just hear 'oops!' *BUTTCH*.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 8 May 2003 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

so does everyone call each other by their ILX aliases in real life?
I was amused on another thread at the thought of someone yelling "hstencil!" and waving.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:10 (twenty years ago) link

at least my name is part of my username which makes it easier to abbreviate

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

Tep was an RL nickname, except it mostly persists online now. People still use it occasionally, especially if there's another Bill around.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:25 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know if I met you if I could call you anything else.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

People do call me hstencil in real life. At least felicity does.

hstencil, Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:31 (twenty years ago) link

I would call you stench.

;)

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:32 (twenty years ago) link

does she pronounce it "aychstencil" or "huhstencil"?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:32 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know if I met you if I could call you anything else.

See, that way I always know if someone's talking to me or not. When someone shouts "Bill," I just assume they mean someone else. (My mother never believed me when I claimed this, though.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

when you come to sydney jim i'm gonna stand in the audience yelling "electric sound!"

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

i shall have my water gun ready

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:45 (twenty years ago) link

i'll be the one in the yellow raincoat.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:51 (twenty years ago) link

I think of JayMc as JAY M.C.
Buttch is still oops when I read it.
I say, keep yer name!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:51 (twenty years ago) link

she pronounces the h.

hstencil, Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:52 (twenty years ago) link

I'm thinking of losing this Chris V. persona I have and going with something new. Im tired of being someone else.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

I think of JayMc as JAY M.C.

That's probably the best way to read it, actually, since it's originally based on my initials: JMC. I couldn't be jmc325 (3/25=birthday) at yahoo.com (it was taken), so I spelled out the J. Only later did I realize it could be read as Jay McSomething.

Sarah, I've recommended that Nordicskillz take the name Auburn Dalliance.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:13 (twenty years ago) link

I gotta gooogle-proof my name.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:21 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Lyra was a real name, and proceeded to call her that for several FAPs until I was clued in.... oopsie!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:27 (twenty years ago) link

okay one more vote and it's back to Oops, motherfuckers. I don't wanna be the cause of your traumatic mental turmoil.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

I liked Oops. Buttch sounds too, well, butch.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:51 (twenty years ago) link

b-b-but it's my nickname IRL So be it.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

You can't fuck with my cognitive dissonance THAT easily. Change it to Oops and I'll just think of you as Buttch. Keep changing it back and forth and I'll end up thinking of you as Boops.

Why does my gummi pizza have gummi pickles on it?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

From the looks of it, the dissonance fucking has already begun

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 03:58 (twenty years ago) link

hm

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:33 (twenty years ago) link

Oops in trying to please Luna SHOCKAH

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:48 (twenty years ago) link

(I believe that's my first SHOCKAH.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:48 (twenty years ago) link

jaymc: nah, baby i wuz trying ta please YOU

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

I think for the next hour, I'll be 'Wonder Twin Powers, Activate'

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:25 (twenty years ago) link

Starting now

Wonder Twin Powers, Activate (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:28 (twenty years ago) link

I like using my own name; it's quite exotic (in the Anglo-Saxon world, at least - the English equivalent would be Thomas), so I probably won't bump into another Tuomas anytime soon. At another board I was called The Truth, but that name started to feel somewhat pompous, even though it was a comics reference. Of course, it didn't help things that no one else knew it was a comics reference.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:34 (twenty years ago) link

Form of a rabid tiger!
Shape of an icecube!

Wonder Twin Powers, Activate (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:36 (twenty years ago) link

Hrmmmm. I think I actually preferred Masonic Boom to Kate (I love how despite the fact that other Kates post here, I am the only one that does not need a surname or initial) but it's much harder to type out every time. I'm lazy. And I refuse to register.

I was going to say I don't remember where Masonic Boom came from, but then I remembered it was a Spacemen3-related screen name. I used to have different screen names for different boards, depending on the topic of the board - hence I was Tabitha's Socks on a Blur board and Paranoid Spice on a Radiohead board. But Masonic Boom was the only one that stuck. (Pity, I quite liked Paranoid Spice, it really bothered pompous Radiohead fans who didn't get bubblegum.)

I quite frequently refer to people as their screen names. As in "Oh, look, Doomie is stalking us, here he is in another record shop!" (To the point where I think HSA actually believes that it is his real name.) And at the FAP, I introduced HSA, saying "This is Joe" and got blank looks until I added "Handsome Sound Artist?"

kate, Friday, 9 May 2003 07:44 (twenty years ago) link

I think the hour is about up.

Wonder Twin Powers, Activate (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:35 (twenty years ago) link

Woo.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:36 (twenty years ago) link

'luna' just seems so much lamer now in comparison

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:45 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah well call it my 15 minutes of fame, and now I'm back to boring old me.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, I shall stay as this. I am convinced.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 08:47 (twenty years ago) link

you should. its a lovely name.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 9 May 2003 09:34 (twenty years ago) link

Only later did I realize it [jaymc] could be read as Jay McSomething.

Or simply as "james", weirdly spelled?

OleM (OleM), Friday, 9 May 2003 10:53 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, I just changed my name from Nick A. to NA. I got tired of being a generic Nick and decided to become something even more generic. Who knows, it might gradually transmogrify into something else. But you can keep thinking of me as Nick if you want.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

I noticed, Nick. You will always be Nick to me.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

i am now starting to feel happier about people calling me gaz

gaz (gaz), Friday, 9 May 2003 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

I was BJ. On another forum I post on I forgot my password, so I had to re-register and I couldn't use my old tag. I decided I may as well use the same tag everywhere.

'Fred Nerk' is appropriate in this case in one sense. In Oz slang FN was the name you called someone when you'd forgotten their right name.

Fred Nerk, Friday, 9 May 2003 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

I keep interpreting NA as N/A, Not Applicable.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:05 (twenty years ago) link

To me NA is "nah", as in "can't be bothered". At least it's not as poncey as N.

I can't remember why I was Mark C. I know I orginally posted under my full name, but wised up to that smartish. Maybe I felt, paradoxically, that it was awkward to have a nickname among a load of people I didn't know.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:15 (twenty years ago) link

NA = Narcotics Anonymous?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 May 2003 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

*sigh* I guess there's always the transexual mr roboto angle.

tsrobodo, Sunday, 20 April 2014 00:26 (ten years ago) link

Not really sure whether I recently changed mine to nathom. Shld go back to stevienixed cause that is the most awesome nickname EVAH (for me anyway).

nathom, Sunday, 20 April 2014 11:53 (ten years ago) link
