the nuances of the groove shift so much over the course of a track that an evaluation of whether they "do much" is entirely based on the zoom of your aural lens

i shall have to listen again because i didn't really notice that with his stuff. it still irks me a bit that a 14 minute long track can't be a 7 minute long track in this case - we're talking minimal dance music in spite of whatever number of subtle nuances lurk deep within the track.

I think with the Present Lover the vocal is extremely important obviously, I mean it may be a long song but it is not just cut up vocal for the sake of it, the way it's cut up is really vital. I must actually dig out Digital Disco and stick it on just to remind me of the order in which all the lines are arranged but it's quite subversive in its own way.

The tracks on The Present Lover are much shorter than those on Vocalcity - mostly between about five and nine minutes?

And the really long tracks on Vocalcity really *do* change quite substantially over the course of their length. Even something ultra-minimal like "The Right Wing" has all sorts of stuff going on. Now I couldn't imagine them being any shorter.

i like luomo and especially his use of vocals but his music revolves a lot around senuality, its like a really particular- to -individual thing to embrace fully and otherwise sorta slides off. it doesn't totally translate for me (body speaking foriegn language?), while i can imagine it from a distance all heavenly in another set of ears and flesh. maybe the voluptuousness isn't it for me. stuff like the new goldfrapp (which i incidentally like more ) divides a lot of people for similar reasons i think.

senuality = sensuality

God I love this song so much

How could this ever be depressing? It's uplifting in a very quiet way, that's a lot better than a quick high. I listen to the Vocalcity version and wish there was an ever longer version that was more decompressed! I just started listening to it when rereading and thinking about this thread and I'm already five minutes in (and waiting for seven!) and it seems too fast.

It's ok! We'll make it better!

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 26 June 2005 04:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess you turn me on
when you're gone.
For me, it didn't go wrong;
we just made another song
both getting it alone,
never asking it for long.
It's just that the world ain't enough,
and it never was
for the two of us.

I guess you make me warm
when you do the harm,
making everybody calm,
getting creative with your charm.
I'm trying to be all yours;
although I ain't answering your calls.
Don't say it's false;
I'm only following my thoughts.

Baby it's ok,
we'll make it better.
Baby, I, I'll survive,
without these women in my life.

I have already told mrs Adam I want this song played at my funeral! Just because! I listen to it almost every day!

I listened to The Present Lover several times and found it static, uninvolving and generally uninteresting. It didn't make me want to dance, it didn't trip any emotions, it didn't do anything; it was kind of like having your friends tell you about an amazing piece of art and, when you finally get to see it you find yourself looking at a beige square.

The Present Lover seems to do this to people, doesn't it? You either find it completely flat and hookless or...well, the best thing ever.

I like Present Lover more than Vocalcity but I was introduced to both at the same time, which might make the difference. I didn't have an attachment to the first one when I heard the second.

deej.., Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:50 (eighteen years ago) link

on both albums the nuances of the groove shift so much over the course of a track that an evaluation of whether they "do much" is entirely based on the zoom of your aural lens - from outerspace earth looks pretty non-eventful too...

Vintage Tim Finney here :)

i sing the lyrics slightly different to how Michael transcribed them there and i'm not entirely sure that he's right and i'm wrong. ha! did you just transcribe them from a close listen, Michael?

also what's the muffled movie dialogue at the beginning of the track from? i have an idea it might be from Hal Hartley's "Trust" and might possibly be the same excerpt Pilote used on his fantastic track "The Dialogue".

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll upload the pilot track soon for comparisons sake.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

pliote, rather.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 17:51 (eighteen years ago) link

here's the pilote track, the dialogue starts about 3:50 and can be heard most clearly at about the 7:30 mark. having listened to both again i'm sot sure it's exactly the same excerpt but it sounds like the same 2 voices (spliced up in the Luomo track).

anyway i'm not so sure anymore but have a listen and tell me what you think.

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 15:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I transcribed it quickly, so who knows if it is accurate. I've also heard it as "Make everybody come" instead of "calm," and I don't know if "creative with your charm" is right either.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 27 June 2005 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

ha! i just typed the following but michael you beat me to it by an instant!

i like:

"...making everybody come
getting creative with your charm..."

melancholy hedonism. or something.

speaking of which, is there anyone out there who knows the lyrics to the chorus of 'the present lover'? i believe i've asked before, but what the hell.

Ha, actually I now remember that the entire time I was playing this album I kept thinking I'd rather hear "I Want A Dog" by PSB. I still can't remember anything about this album beyond some wispy vocals.

MO MO MO MO MO

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

in miami 2004, luomo was re-editing this line:

"Baby, I, I'll survive,
without these women in my life."

to be:

"Baby, I, I'll survive,
without THIS RHYTHM in my life."

without this rhythm, rh-rh-rhythm, r-r-r-rhythm, etc.

so maybe it originally is rhythm? I can't tell for sure.

david day (winslow), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, it sounds like the original is a dub itself of a straight vocal tune we will never hear.

"Making everybody come / Getting creative with your tongue" makes the song sound so much more lustful!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i always sing "without THIS RHYTHM in my life".

jed_ (jed), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i always thought "getting creative with your tongue" was correct

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:04 (eighteen years ago) link

"getting creative with your charm" is best

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I always thought it was "this rhythm" too.

Maybe in "The Present Lover" the guy was originally talking about being the "Most Momus"???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm the present, the true lover.
Die, and ever, no, nobody does better.
Does better. Does better.
Would you be mine? In the silver?
Would you be mine in most moment, in most moment?
Mo-most moment? Mo-most moment? Mo-most moment?

Ten for you, ten for you.
A ten for you, a ten for you.
Ten for you, ten for you.

Why did you do me like this? Content for you.
Why did you do me like this? Content for you.
This, and this, ten for you.
This and for you.
This and for you.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 June 2005 23:51 (eighteen years ago) link

or how about "Honey, 10-4 you."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:02 (eighteen years ago) link

i thought 10-4.

I ain't here to disappoint you.

When I talk in danger to you,
I imagine us not talking,
And everything starts moving like that,
And then I know I could make it
I could make it in stereo, stereovision
And all I can hear is low self mate audio, in audio
Trying to fit in radio, stereo, stereovision
And all I can hear
The radio keeps silent
Silently walking
I never saw it moving like that
The clock was stuck
But it was about fires in spite of us
Could it be silent? Could silence protect us?
Could silence be silence? Could silence protect us?
Trying to protect you even more, give you better features
My native force, to be the true, to be the true creator
That's why I just stay naked and eat you but
The radio keep silent
Can you explain what will make me safe, me safe?

I ain't here to disappoint you, girl.
I ain't here to disappoint you.
I ain't here to disappoint you, girl.
You, you.

When I arrive, I expect you to come up with better features.
That's why I talk in danger to you.
That's why I talk, that's why I talk in danger to you.
That's why I talk, that's why I talk in danger to you.

ETC.....

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 00:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I really do hear "women" instead of "rhythm." I'm sure if you saw him live and kept hearing "women women women women women" over and over again, the word would start to lose it's meaning and just becomes a rhythm, while also sounding like the word rhythm.
