@SarahSpainI had a feeling #Brewers fans were idiots, but a standing ovation for Lyin' Ryan Braun is a whole new level of stupidity.
Sweet Christ it's going to be a long season

― images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Monday, 31 March 2014 19:49 (ten years ago) link
Thank you for telling us the exact right amount we should be cheering for him. I was afraid we were supposed to root against him, but now I know we can cheer, if only in polite moderation.
― Evan R, Monday, 31 March 2014 19:51 (ten years ago) link
way to get it dude
standing ovation in this case is loaded, most people probably standing up to say "we support you in your recovery from this awful strd infliction you've inflicted on yourself we got yr back" but it's not hard to read it as "hey you got boned we always had your back selig did 9/11"
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 31 March 2014 19:53 (ten years ago) link
lol not a single Brewer fan I know things Braun is innocent. we're just glad to have him back. keep in mind this team hadn't made the playoffs for TWENTY SIX YEARS at one point.
― frogbs, Monday, 31 March 2014 20:09 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, overwhelming consensus is that Braun is a lying douchebag largely responsible for the hell the team endured last season. But you can understand why fans don't like being ridiculed as backwoods hicks because they're excited to have the star player the team's entire future hinges on back in the lineup after an ugly long absence.
― Evan R, Monday, 31 March 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

a study in contrasts - listening to the cardinals announcers stupidly shittalk about joey votto taking walks, interrupted by yadi making an incredible head's up play to start a double play

i haven't heard ANY baseball announcer say anything intelligent about joey votto/walks/obp
votto would look like a mad genius if he had anyone behind him to protect him/drive him in
― Karl Malone, Monday, 31 March 2014 21:14 (ten years ago) link
I don't care about steroids that much, but Braun brought the sample collector Dino Laurenzi down with him. That puts him in a class with guys like Lance Armstrong imo. Not merely a cheater, but fucking with other people to hide your lie.

apropos of absolutely nothing, i just did a quick check to determine which player with a career negative fWAR had the most plate appearances.
Alfredo Griffin. 7331 PAs. Career fWAR: -1.0
Among active players, it seems to be Delmon Young, with 3939 PAs and a career fWAR of -1.3

― images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:23 (ten years ago) link
only 4278 PAs for poor old Yuniesky.
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:26 (ten years ago) link
but an admirable, solid -0.8 fWAR
Yuniesky Betancourt's streak of SEVEN consecutive seasons with a negative WAR is mindblowing (fWAR is a little kinder to him, but not by much). During much of that time he was a full time player!
― frogbs, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:37 (ten years ago) link

His adjusted OPS at home and on the road are identical, and his home/road OBP's are almost the same too. His doubles on the road turned into homers at Coors, but otherwise he was the same hitter no matter where he played.
