oh, gotcha. so I do have to keep tabs on the PS3 during this process, noted
I am leaning to 1TB considering how quick I filled this out (not even a year!), but in a year or two I will probably migrate to PS4, so 500GB ain't a bad option to consider. depends on what deals I can scrounge up

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:20 (ten years ago) link

its possible to set it forget it when downloading btw.
choose the option to download automatic updates during the night, start to download games via the store & switch the console off.
while you sleep the PS3 will download the games in your queue & crucially install them for you.

you don't so much have to keep tabs on the ps3 as just make sure it ain't fuckin' up.
the 1 tb option is apparently problematic both in terms of size of drive and the way the ps3 is set up so maybe read up a little online?

will do, will do

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

So is it possible to at least drag & drop the actual game from the PS3 to an external drive even if it isn't playable from external storage? It's nice that Sony at least saw fit to give us the option of doing a full backup, but since I can just redownload everything (including saves, thanks to PS+) in the event of a major catastrophe, I'm honestly more interested in the short term in just being able to store downloaded games somewhere local. Because I'll probably just keep buying super cheap games and not downloading them until I've finished playing something else (which I will then presumably have to delete). So stupid.

Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Monday, 7 April 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

i've done the downloading overnight thing in the past (though it feels random on whether games will actually get installed or not after download), it's just not currently optimal in my household to do long file transfers/internet use of any kind, even overnight - someone's always online

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

xp I hadn't actually thought of that, but that's not a bad idea to use a backup external just for that purpose. Still, 250GB ain't cutting it no more

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

my backlog is like twenty to thirty games deep on my ps3 alone dude, so don't guilt yourself

same here, sadlol

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:48 (ten years ago) link

i mean, i have Tokyo Jungle on disc, man. ON DISC

Nhex, Monday, 7 April 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

make that forty to fifty deep if we're counting discs.

My problems are a) being new to PS3 and super excited about it, b) ready access to free PS+ games and scads of <=$5 games via the weekly sales, and c) inaugurating my PS3 ownership by playing games that I would later come to realize were among the most time-intensive on the system (e.g. Skyrim, Just Cause 2, Minecraft), thereby making the inevitable backlog all the more backloggy.

US PSN having a $0.99 sale this weekend that includes Tokyo Jungle. buy Tokyo Jungle!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 18 April 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

Link: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/flash-sale/cid=STORE-MSF77008-9_FLASHSALE2014

I'm really tempted to get almost everything here, even double-backlogging some via multiplatform (Tales of Monkey Island, Back to the Future) or just paying the $1 for digital convenience (Tokyo Jungle). Also some curiosities like Echochrome II, Super Stardust, Crash Commando... even Jurassic Park which is supposed to be bad, but $1!

I'd say Retro/Grade is worth the $0.99 if you're in the mood for a decent though mediocre rhythm game

How is the Sam and max game?

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Saturday, 19 April 2014 05:28 (ten years ago) link

Pretty good! Very strange opening scenes in the first episode, but it gets better.

Should've known Puppeteer would go free within six months, and before I got to play it. Oh well!
Happy about Skullgirls: Encore, I liked the PC beta I tried back in the summer.

Nhex, Thursday, 24 April 2014 19:39 (ten years ago) link

Puppeteer is an endless tutorial :(

Sony, you'll killing me with your sales. I really gotta get that new HD soon.

Is Soulcalibur V worth five bucks?

Do not buy Chrono Trigger, it is the worst version.

and yo-yos (abanana), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 06:02 (ten years ago) link

I might dip on Chrono Cross, I never did play that one
I hear SCV has a very short single player mode, but $5? probably worth it

That was about what it ran off the disc last fall.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 15 May 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

just got my code for the playstation now beta, tested it out with platformer rocketbirds

it was ok, reminded me of playing FIFA online where you have to mentally build in a little buffer time for your inputs to register. wouldn't want to play anything too twitch reliant on it though

anonanon, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:27 (nine years ago) link

I tried Sniper Elite on it, and it sucked; I'm afraid to see how Skullgirls would've fared. For certain games I'm sure it'd be fine though.

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 19:05 (nine years ago) link

My girlfriend is out of town this weekend so I would like to treat myself to a PS3 game. I'm thinking The Last of Us or Dark Souls 1 or 2, with GTA V as an outside option since I'm slightly embarrassed about games that have cartoon drawings of big boobs in all the marketing material. I want my lady to think that, even though I spent the weekend in my bathrobe, smoking weed and playing video games, I did it in a way that was grim and deeply lonely, not titties and fast cars.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 21:56 (nine years ago) link

try ffxiii

antexit, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 23:26 (nine years ago) link

ffxiii definitely one of the grimmest gaming experiences I've ever had, that's for sure

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 23:33 (nine years ago) link

Last of Us imo

polyphonic, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 23:55 (nine years ago) link

Perfect for an obsessive weekend delve. Not sure the weed will help though!

Nhex, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:15 (nine years ago) link

As much as I love Dark Souls, Last of Us might be the best bet for a weekend jam.

circa1916, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:23 (nine years ago) link

Haha if I said "I'm gonna play FFXIII all weekend" she'd probably call an ambulance. Nobody's stupid enough to voluntarily play FFXIII.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:53 (nine years ago) link

"FFXIII? Wait a minute, you're just waiting until I leave the house to take drugs, aren't you!"

fields of salmon, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:54 (nine years ago) link

"No, I really like the story and the linear non-branching gameplay option is really refreshing after playing the acclaimed and 17-year-old Final Fantasy Tactics repeatedly."

fields of salmon, Thursday, 22 May 2014 01:55 (nine years ago) link

LOL If I had a PS3 I'd be playing Metal Gear Solid 3, cos I've only ever attempted it on emulator and it is just too slow to play at the moment.

It is funny to hear Major Tom explain things to Snake at an incredibly relaxed pace with that nice accent of his.

PS3/PS4 player looking to zone out on a new game this weekend, any recs guys? I like very violent action games with RPG elements or non-JRPG RPGs with action elements.

New Wolfenstein? Watch Dogs? something else? doesn't have to be new.

(I usually play all the tentpole games-- in terms of the last 12 mos Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, GTAV, Last of Us, Tomb Raider, GTAV, Ghosts, Mercenary Kings, Infamous Second Son, Dark Souls 2, XCOM are all accounted for).
This is crossposted to the what ru playing now thread, sorry but i simply can't take the risk

antexit, Friday, 30 May 2014 14:54 (nine years ago) link

shit you DID already play tomb raider

Neckbread (Will M.), Friday, 30 May 2014 15:00 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, fun game but I only got about 10 hours out of it even with the stupid collectables. "This appears to be some kind of ancient coin! The nailpolish on it indicates it was used in an ancient jukebox!"

antexit, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Sleeping Dogs?

btw, since I never post anymore and this is the PS3 thread, my last year of gaming can be summed up by the following, which I noticed last night:

I logged 12 more hours on Mercenary Kings than I did on GTAV! That blows my mind.

antexit, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:11 (nine years ago) link

Played Sleeping Dogs, got bored of it once I was fully levelled up and never beat it, as often happens. You're on the right track though dudes! Keep it up!

antexit, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:12 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait actually the reason I stopped playing it was I kept getting stuck coming out of the ocean on these fucking idiot rockfaces that you can't scale and are like 10 minutes on foot in either direction.

antexit, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

antexit what abt ass ass in screed

am0n, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:26 (nine years ago) link

If you're up to date with the Arkhams then it does sound like Watch Dogs is probably what you're after, unless you want to save that for next gen (which I'm leaning towards doing).

JimD, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:44 (nine years ago) link

you're long done with elder scrolls, yeah?

how about kingdoms of amalur or dungeons dogma?

or whatever the fuck those were called

Wolfenstein!
