HBO adaptation of Game of Thrones - will this be just for nerds? (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

the theory is so foreshadowed in the books it's unreal and it would make no sense for it to be any other combination. probably best to go to the book thread.

Number None, Monday, 7 April 2014 22:47 (ten years ago) link

who the fuck eats arms though, seriously?

I mean, I'm not a cannibal so I could be mistaken, but I wouldn't imagine there's a lot worth eating on a human arm.

Where are these wikis and are they spoiler free?

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 7 April 2014 22:58 (ten years ago) link

Definitely avoid the ASOIAF wiki, as it's current with the books.

polyphonic, Monday, 7 April 2014 23:08 (ten years ago) link

haha yeah I should stress i inevitably find out more than I wanted. but on be main one there a big tab for "history" or something like that. "spoiler-free" is probably very relative but it's all basically the record.

ryan, Monday, 7 April 2014 23:24 (ten years ago) link

I figure this show has maybe 1 or 2 more seasons of high ratings before people get tired of being endlessly strung along and things become uncontrollably convoluted and pointless

well good thing they're only planning for three more seasons

Clay, Monday, 7 April 2014 23:35 (ten years ago) link

GRRM said there were only going to be three books once

Number None, Monday, 7 April 2014 23:38 (ten years ago) link

feel like this is set up such that no conclusion will be satisfying. feels like it's kinda meant to go on forever, what with the whole starting in the middle tactic and the disposability of the characters

those cannibal guys could use some cooking lessons

Audience expectations for cannibals to be culinary artisans could be a result of watching Hannibal, some of these fuckers just want to chomp on yer bits!

xelab, Monday, 7 April 2014 23:41 (ten years ago) link

tbh I didn't pick up on the theory until I started trawling ASOIAF wikis AKA while waiting for MOAR BOOKS/EPISODES.

Ned Zeppelin (Leee), Monday, 7 April 2014 23:41 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I certainly wouldn't have clocked on my own. So much backstory being flung at you in the books it's hard to know exactly what is significant.

Dunno if this has all been over above already but one of my favourite things about the show is that two of my favourite characters are actors I used to be familiar with but didn't recognise them until someone else told me. Jerome Flynn from Robson and Jerome Rory Mcann, who was in an old Scottish porridge advert and a wheelchair user in the sitcom Book Group.
Hope this wasn't posted already.

It was posted already. Off to the Wall with you.

Ned Zeppelin (Leee), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Shit, sorry. Couldn't check all posts today and YouTube doesn't work very well on my kindle, so I took a risk.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 17:43 (ten years ago) link

When you post in the Game of Thrones thread, you post something new or you die.

(No worries for not checking every other 5000+ messages in here.)

Ned Zeppelin (Leee), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 17:45 (ten years ago) link

Okay, something new:

http://www.theverge.com/entertainment/2014/4/8/5594448/hbo-orders-two-more-seasons-of-game-of-thrones

(In, granted, the least surprising news ever category. Still, is this the first time they've ordered two rather than one?)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 19:12 (ten years ago) link

I wonder how many of the characters will be either dead or played by different actors that far down the line.

Evan, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 19:51 (ten years ago) link

Mountain #8 by that point, surely.

anyone else think jaime looks hella older and gaunter this season

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:02 (ten years ago) link

also there was a lot of non-book stuff in this ep, right, like the brothel scene? in the books he actually does meet tyrion and they have a nice chat i think?

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:03 (ten years ago) link

and a bit of respect for each other?

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:03 (ten years ago) link

jaime's danish accent seems way less obvious this season.

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:27 (ten years ago) link

He has a Danish accent? I thought he was a yank making a decent hack at RP.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:49 (ten years ago) link

yeah dude has put a lot of work in on his accent, probably especially now that he's getting US film roles

anonanon, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 14:49 (ten years ago) link

Yeah Jaime def looks more gaunt and thin and weathered than before, by design I think

Feel like making Oberyn bi is a little bit too on the nose, was that hinted at too in the books?? NB I totally missed out on Renly in the books but it seems pretty obvious now after rereading the relevant passages

, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 15:50 (ten years ago) link

Haven't seen the new ep, haven't read the thread in a while, but I did see this:

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 15:53 (ten years ago) link

i have no problem with making oberyn bi but it was definitely played like a "...did i SHOCK you" moment which is a bit lame in this day and age

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

Oberyn a bit less of a cunt in the books no?

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 16:13 (ten years ago) link

Been a long time but I think he comes across as more cunning and sophisticated in the books

They're really trying to play up the "this guy ain't from around here and he's not gonna play by the rules of WESTEROS" or w/e (NB before some nerd points out that Dorne actually is in Westeros 1) you know what I mean 2) those maps in the paperbacks are shit)

, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 16:16 (ten years ago) link

Oberyn's sexuality isn't hinted at in the books -- it's fairly well spelled out (or at least with characters repeating rumors). I'm more miffed that he's more White Viper than Red Viper.

Ned Zeppelin (Leee), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

I'd like Benjen Stark to come back at some point. I can't tell if we're supposed to care about his whereabouts at all or not.

nashwan, Thursday, 10 April 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

well he hasn't been mentioned in like 26 episodes or so so he's probably not supposed to be at the forefront of your mind

Clay, Thursday, 10 April 2014 20:48 (ten years ago) link

if benjen ever reappears they'll probably give you a handy flashback to remind you of who he is like with ser dontos

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 10 April 2014 20:54 (ten years ago) link

Well, in the books, Dontos turns out to be Benjen, oops, spoilers.

littlefinger better be back next ep too, rly missing him

There are at least fifteen characters in this that I would happily kill off immediately if it meant freeing up space for trash talking and machinations courtesy of Vary and Littlefinger.

Looking forward to LF's impending fatherhood issues with the creepy breastfeeding child as well.

Varys, ahem.
