man i'm pretty sure 'so what'cha want' doesn't sample it, it doesn't sound like it and i remember reading some article about how they recorded drums for it (building a long tunnel around the kick drum and mic'ing the other end).

I found stuff online that says they did, but couldn't confirm 100% (and "E-Pro" is a sample of that sample, whatever it is).

Widely viewed as the most-sampled drum beat in rock.

That's a sample of Schooly D's "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?" (also sampled in the Chapterhouse song).

yet another poll this month where my choice is enigma - 'return to innocence'

Yeah the Billy Squier record has definitely been plundered way more times than Zep's (actually, that would also make a good poll, though it would be hard to narrow down the highlights). Mountain's "Long Red" also probably surpasses it, though more people sample that record for the "Louder! Yeah!" vocals than for the drum beat.

As for this poll, tough call but going for Enigma in the end (will always take the opportunity to rep for that track). From the rest of the poll options, Coldcut second and Massive Attack third. "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" (not included here) is the best use of this break by the Beasties, where it's mixed quite nicely with a sample of the Isleys' "That Lady".

I went with Sophie B. Hawkins. I think I heard that for the first time in a Melrose Place episode.

Are you sure you meant "So What'cha Want"? Because I think you meant "Rhymin' & Stealin'".
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 April 2014 18:04 (ten years ago) link
oh nm, just noticed Rhymin' & Stealin' is the first option.
Where the hell is it in So What'cha Want?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 April 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link
it's not in So Whatcha Want

No, it's Mike Diamond playing a drum set in a recording studio.

The Southside Movement track is sampled in So Whatcha Want but they took the bass, not the drums. The drums definitely weren't sampled, though Mike D was probably going for a WTLB-type beat given their history of sampling it.
Don't think E-Pro really belongs in the poll options either, since he actually nicked the Beasties' drums rather than sampling them from Zep.

E-Pro makes me sad cos I was so psyched for new Beck when I heard it and it turned out to be like listening to a hollowed out shell of 90s Beck.
