wow. i saw him at fwd in london a few years back when he played for the first time here and it was one of the best nights ive had in a club. this just seems so weird. he was always like a footwork representative too, not just cos he was reaching out to other scenes but im guessing cos he was such a cool relaxed kind of guy, so i wonder who will fill that role now. was a bit unsure about double cup when i first got it but i ended up really appreciating it (i liked teklife vol 1 more). seems like thats the most appropriate (in mood) record to play of his now. i cant believe it actually, footworks one of the things ive been most excited about in the last few years, and though he wasnt my favourite producer, most of that was down to the part rashad played in taking it outside chicago. i was really interested to see what he did after double cup too as it seemed such a change from what he was doing before. what a shame.

Oh man. I was listening to him just last night and had no idea. RIP. Just read that he had a 9yo kid. what a tragedy.

One of the most (selfishly) frustrating things for me as a fan is knowing I'll never get to hear him play out and also worrying that, without Rashad, footwork risks withdrawing back into its own insular space. I know there are enough footwork artists working globally right now to keep things afloat but IMO it was Rashad who was leading the charge, pushing things into new territories, physically and figuratively, in his own mannered way. From speaking to him and watching other interviews it seemed his colleague Spinn was the one most verbose in explaining the essential ideas and visions behind their work, but I get the impression Rashad was keener to get on and let his music do the talking.

Agree with the above.

There was a moment last year listening to Double Cup where things snapped into focus and I realized how hands down amazing that record is. Really up there with golden era 90s dance albums for consistently presenting surprising experimental sonic twists and turns, but nevertheless remains absolutely funktional and aimed at the dance floor. Something increasingly rare and even unexpected these days.

what the fuck, no!

I used my intro-playlist-generating software at work to make a memorial ENtro to DJ Rashad and his rough stylistic vicinity.

man, one of the things i appreciated about Rashad besides his amazing music was that he was a few years older than me, didn't start getting widespread success until his 30s, and seemed really grounded and together in his outlook & life. very sad.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 28 April 2014 14:40 (nine years ago) link

sorry to speculate but i wonder if this could have been related to that car accident he was involved in last year (painkillers etc).

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 28 April 2014 14:41 (nine years ago) link

xxp that playlist is pretty interesting (& massive), does it work off a particular rashad track or a broader selection?

Bok Bok & P.O.L Style - Rinse 27.04.14 - tribute to DJ Rashad https://soundcloud.com/nightslugs/bok-bok-pol-style-rinse-270414-dj-rashad-tribute

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Monday, 28 April 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

No, it doesn't use a particular track, it attempts to model Rashad and what we (the Echo Nest) think are similar artists as a set.

jesus shitting fuck, how the hell did this happen?

Last night I passed a bar that was playing DJ Rashad with the windows open. I yelled "RIP DJ Rashad! Teklife for life!" through the window and a few people cheered. :)

cant make my mind up about the next life comp. but i do like the last traxman album. and dj clent's roots of footwork mix goes stupidly hard.

StillAdvance, Sunday, 16 November 2014 23:32 (nine years ago) link

come now, what's not to like about "next life"

the late great, Sunday, 16 November 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

i didnt dislike it, and i may need to sit with it more, it just seemed to concentrate on a style of footwork that makes me a bit sleepy.
