HBO adaptation of Game of Thrones - will this be just for nerds? (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

whoever commented on the lack of epic scenes upthread was otm -- I lamented the skipping-over of the meereen slave uprising almost immediately after the scene changed... we only saw one master get shanked! wtf

yeah but then we saw a shit-ton of them get nailed to signposts, which was pretty gnarly

it did feel like another set up ep to me, but you need those too, and there was some cool stuff in it

whats up w baelish revealing his ways to sansa, that was some straight bond villain shit

learn to enjoy the setup the same way you enjoy the rollercoaster creeping up to the top of the hill

No reason to have an entire episode of setup for every story, followed by a peak for every story, then setups, on and on. It's plagued the series since the beginning; give a payoff to one or two of the many story lines each week while setting up the others. It's really not hard.

This may be extremely petty, but:

- Did this white walker feed the baby and keep it warm during their trek to the white walker lair? OR...
- is the white walker lair extremely close for them to be able to slowly stroll there without the baby starving or sooner freezing to death? ALSO
- Wasn't that the EXACT white walker that Sam murdered? I assume they aren't all clones.
- Which is also the EXACT(?) white walker that we saw for the first time when Sam was hiding behind the rock
- That being said, by the end of THAT scene he was totally surrounded by the undead army/white walkers. How the hell did he slip away again?

I can't think of anything worse than being trapped on a ship with creepy Long John Littlefinger

yeah, writing one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows on tv that also happens to be an adaptation of a massively involved fantasy series is definitely not that hard

I am really being worn down by this show's insistence on shorthanding evil via sexual violence. Also I may never be able to watch season two of Torchwood again.

yeah, given all the attention for the cersei/jaime scene last week, it's surprising that few people on the interview seem to have taken issue with last night's episode, especially the part where women are being raped and the really creepy guy is talking about them being raped until they die.

Well, that is largely because the dude doing the raping is supposed to be a mustache-twirling unambiguous Bad Guy and therefore rape is to be expected from him.

Yes but the rapists were not characters the audience wanted to like so its all good

Jaime, OTOH, was going through a redemption of sorts due to the revelation of extra information about the circumstances behind his murder of Aerys and his journey with Brienne; anti-heroes and reformed scoundrels aren't supposed to rape their sisters, that's a fundamental violation of American storytelling rules.

Most of that outcry was a "how dare you make me like this rapist" reaction IMO as opposed to people actually objecting to the seeming escalation of the depiction of rape on this show.

I super-disagree with that, maybe it's just the (tumblr) circles I travel in but the reaction I saw were "this is the worst of an increasingly disturbing number of decisions to depict gratuitous violence against women."

I am talking more about my perception of the mainstream reaction to that scene than anything else.

i was pretty taken aback by the white walker ritual stuff i guess from the books i never would have assumed they had a culture/society/religion or anything, basically i read them as high functioning zombies basically

It's fairly well-established in the books that while the wights are the (high-functioning) zombies, the actual Others/WWs themselves are culturally distinct (think of the circle of innards they make in the prologue -- don't remember if that happened in the books or the show only).

I guess maybe the idea is that we were expecting the white walkers to be motivated by kind of ghostly evil compulsions, rather than just some sort of evil race with a culture/home.
