Jaime, OTOH, was going through a redemption of sorts due to the revelation of extra information about the circumstances behind his murder of Aerys and his journey with Brienne; anti-heroes and reformed scoundrels aren't supposed to rape their sisters, that's a fundamental violation of American storytelling rules.

Most of that outcry was a "how dare you make me like this rapist" reaction IMO as opposed to people actually objecting to the seeming escalation of the depiction of rape on this show.

chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Monday, 28 April 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

I super-disagree with that, maybe it's just the (tumblr) circles I travel in but the reaction I saw were "this is the worst of an increasingly disturbing number of decisions to depict gratuitous violence against women."

reddening, Monday, 28 April 2014 17:07 (ten years ago) link

I am talking more about my perception of the mainstream reaction to that scene than anything else.

i was pretty taken aback by the white walker ritual stuff i guess from the books i never would have assumed they had a culture/society/religion or anything, basically i read them as high functioning zombies basically

dollar rave club (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 28 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link

It's fairly well-established in the books that while the wights are the (high-functioning) zombies, the actual Others/WWs themselves are culturally distinct (think of the circle of innards they make in the prologue -- don't remember if that happened in the books or the show only).

felt like whole baby sequence was trolling

especially at the very end when the babys eyse went blue and it turned toward the camera like LOL OWNED

lag∞n, Monday, 28 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

I guess maybe the idea is that we were expecting the white walkers to be motivated by kind of ghostly evil compulsions, rather than just some sort of evil race with a culture/home.

Evan, Monday, 28 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

Wasn't that the EXACT white walker

Presumably all the younger ones are Craster's sons. There might be a family resemblance.

Congratulations! And my condolences. (Sanpaku), Monday, 28 April 2014 19:02 (ten years ago) link

motivated by kind of ghostly evil compulsions

no other motivation really makes sense imo

can we get some kind of arnold-as-mr. freeze/white walker mash up somehow?

ian, Monday, 28 April 2014 19:19 (ten years ago) link

the white walkers turn out to be actually the good guys?

lag∞n, Monday, 28 April 2014 19:19 (ten years ago) link

They understand the threat that climate change poses to the planet.

+1 for getting sick of all the gratuitous rapeyness. We get it. Move it to off-camera.

think the trailer for Damon Lindelof's new show before the episode was key to the direction GoT wants to go with this mythology shit

So is the baby gonna stay a baby or is it gonna grow

If white walkers can grow then why don't the horses just grow a new face

the horses choose not to?

lag∞n, Monday, 28 April 2014 23:39 (ten years ago) link

The horses are wights. They died and the white walkers are able to bring them back. I think.

I think I totally missed this part in the books

, Monday, 28 April 2014 23:45 (ten years ago) link

It's entirely possible I'm mixing up the show and the books, tbh.

No reason to have an entire episode of setup for every story, followed by a peak for every story, then setups, on and on. It's plagued the series since the beginning; give a payoff to one or two of the many story lines each week while setting up the others. It's really not hard.

ugh, it's like an accepted thing now esp in Critically Acclaimed Hour-long Dramas that an episode is either allowed to be setup or payoff. like 80% of the episode reviews on the avclub include the line "this was a transitional episode, but..."

part of it is lazy viewership most of it is these shows/media/promotional material training us to only give a shit about different-colored weddings

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 01:56 (ten years ago) link

i think there was an entire season worth of breaking bad episodes that were described as "transitional"

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 01:57 (ten years ago) link

are there gonna be more different colored weddings tho

Man, the Tyrrells are good. When it comes to scheming and machinations everyone else in this is an amateur by comparison, no one even suspects them of anything. Maybe the Spider does, but he's slipping.

I don't understand/can't remember the motivations of anyone who mutinied beyond the wall or what they're intending to gain from this. Doesn't help that I glaze over the snow scenes when there aren't White Walkers around, because the only main characters are involved are John Snow and Sam and they are both terrible and boring.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 11:22 (ten years ago) link

I don't understand/can't remember the motivations of anyone who mutinied beyond the wall or what they're intending to gain from this.

They are all just stupid ruffians who were sick of being in the Night's Watch and wanted to do some drinking and raping for a bit.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 11:29 (ten years ago) link

I totally called the necklace thing last week! but then it looked like a red herring.

kinder, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:07 (ten years ago) link

Those north of the wall ruffians are new, not in the books

dollar rave club (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:29 (ten years ago) link

it would be cool if the show started diverging wildly from the books and turned into a totally different story

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:36 (ten years ago) link

like if you were martin wouldnt you want a second shot, everyone says the fourth and fifth books blow anyway

also itd be cool to freak out and confuse everyone who read the books

Is Tommen supposed to old enough to get someone knocked up yet?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:45 (ten years ago) link

Tommen is supposed to be eight (and he was in s2 iirc). In the book he gets married to Margaery (who is 16) but it's supposed to be years before he's considered old enough to consumate his marriage.

Thankfully the show ignored all that and gave us the straight up paedo vibes!

gyac, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:49 (ten years ago) link

i guess it is spoilery to talk about any story thread not being in the books because you know nothing of actual consequence can happen. and as a viewer that realization kind of balances out the fun of the novelty and leaves a net 'meh'. i will say that they did need to do something, the show has to care about regular screen time for all the major characters in a way that the books didn't. and the mutineers at crasters are not really new, they are just forgotten about as the story progresses elsewhere. i think repurposing an existing element is pretty smart, and by doing so they are clearly trying to keep a rein on the introduction of wholly new things.

*viewer who has read the books

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:53 (ten years ago) link

highlighting the paedo vibes of mediaeval-style political royal marriages is not necessarily inappropriate. i thought it was a well done scene.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:57 (ten years ago) link

except for the part the show itself and many of the viewers seem unaware of the creepiness of that scene.

gyac, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 12:59 (ten years ago) link

he seems to be 12 or 13 in the show

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 13:00 (ten years ago) link

lagoon this isn't art this is nerd shit

But yeah I'm kind of hopeful that the show ppl can maybe correct some of the flaws of the last 2. I'd love to see the sequence recut to be chronological
