I'm not sure it's ever made entirely clear how they mark the passing of years in Westeros (and I've read the books!).

o man i am so upset abt the depiction of braavos in the opening credits i wait patiently all season for a new castle then this, all the other castles are so dope and look like real little machines gearing up then this braavos shit is just some horrible sloppy cgi bs wtf happened did their original castles guy die or something they ruined everything

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 13:54 (nine years ago) link

Man GoT is the one show I never skip the opening credits of. So stirring.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:10 (nine years ago) link

dude who plays the hound was amazin gin this episode. the way he said "i didn't steal the toy, i was just playing with it" just broke my heart.

i agree that new-gregor is not nearly as sinister as the first version. new one just looks like a big brute. old one seemed truly evil.

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:11 (nine years ago) link

Somebody told me they change the opening credits based on who shows up in that ep so I started watching the opening credits but they ran the same shit for like 6 eps straight so I stopped

new gregor is the strongest man in iceland apparently??

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:13 (nine years ago) link

its like instantly he was a child again. so good

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

GoT has the best opening credits ever, except for dr. quinn medicine woman. for those of us who haven't read the books it's like a nice reminder of the GoT's geography

but yeah, they totaly fucked up braavos. maybe the person who created it got all cocky after the first few seasons, and when they came back to him to do braavos she was like "yeah i'll do it...for 8 million bucks. ~snicker snicker~ you NEED me now" and the producers decided to go with someone else

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:16 (nine years ago) link

yeah that is a large dude. i am curious how he will handle the long stirring monologue gregor gets this season.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:18 (nine years ago) link

Gregor Clegane: You stupid fucking cunt. You, Williamson, I'm talking to you, shithead. You just cost me $6,000. Six thousand dollars, and one Cadillac. That's right. What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do about it, asshole? You're fucking shit. Where did you learn your trade, you stupid fucking cunt, you idiot? Who ever told you that you could work with men? Oh, I'm gonna have your job, shithead.

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:19 (nine years ago) link

omg they should remake GGR with arnie, stallone, jcvd, etc. billion dollar idea.

expendables 3: always be closing

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:22 (nine years ago) link

I don't think they change the opening credits per episode, they haven't had the Eyrie yet this season and the Dreadfort's been in all the episodes. And Winterfell's still there!

gyac, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:33 (nine years ago) link

yeah its not comprehensive but it does have some relationship to the episode like the slavers bay cities were all up to date and then when bravoos was introduced and so on

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:35 (nine years ago) link

Yeah they aren't different every single episode but they do definitely bring locations in mid-season.

Game of Thrones and True Detective have been the only US series where I have never once skipped the credits.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 14:37 (nine years ago) link

Braavos looked good in the actual show.

worst credits = Boardwalk Empire, the theme song is so long and awful

Close, but the actual answer is Homeland.

xpost otm re boardwalk

it's so incongruous! like, jarringly so. I would love to hear an explanation for why that music was picked to be THE music

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:04 (nine years ago) link

I like Brian Jonestown Massacre but I don't get it as theme music for that show (just looked it up on youtube since I haven't watched the show)

Evan, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:07 (nine years ago) link

or that song specifically I mean

Evan, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

yeah, why not some old timey music that matches with the setting?

nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:08 (nine years ago) link

or dubstep

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link

lol that shitty themesong is BJM?! yeah they should have gone with something more period appropriate

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

They should have picked a better BJM song at least.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:24 (nine years ago) link

maybe some big rousing powerful orchestral cgi thing showing all the locations. the boardwalk, zoom in on the hotel, that weird shop with the babies, over to nyc to rothstein's pad, gyp rosetti's apartment, etc.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

and all the locations shd be these animated lil machines that pop up when the camera flies over them

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

I'm powerfully ambivalent about the GoT main theme. It's a great tune/hook but Djawadi does absolutely NOTHING with it, it's just so dead as music. That incessant accompanying figure is so stupid on fake (or fake-sounding) strings, he shoudl have just owned it and used chunka chunka guitars. By about 40 seconds in I feel trapped. He is p good when he does eerie sound designy cues though.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:35 (nine years ago) link

i always sing the theme with the words game of thrones game of thrones game of thrones over and over like that one youtube

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

That's kind of cool because three syllable "game of thrones" is out of phase with four syllable "NERR ner ner-ner" so you have to be on your game.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:39 (nine years ago) link

Braavos looked good in the actual show.

Agreed, but we saw Braavos once, something like two episodes before it appeared in the opening credits, IIRC.

goddammit

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:41 (nine years ago) link

I think the incidental music is mostly pretty blah (remember a nice cue in s1 when arya was training with syrio) but the main theme is undeniably huge.

for some reason it's the last "HO-dor ho" (minus the last 'ho') that cracks me up every time

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

It does need to be mentioned that Blue Oyster Cult have been using the GoT main title as their walk-on music for at least 2 years (E Bloom is a big SFF nerd)
