holding down L1 can give you better close control, but TBH the best way to get sharp at this game is to go through the pain of the master league with the crappy players they give you to start with.
you really get the hang of making space, picking passes and not giving the ball away cheaply. everything pretty much goes from there, especially when you manage to get a few decent players in the squad.

is there any way to get replays on the net easily? i need to show off some goals, and this thread could be the opening i need.
― darraghmac, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:07 (sixteen years ago) link
thanks for all the advice guyz! yeah my main tactic seems to be long crosses and headers, which is pretty iffy
L1 when passing sounds like exactly the kind of thing i'd like to be doing, get a little motion going on, a little teamwork

i play 2 player, so that kind of move isn't normally an option for me- you lose control of the player you had.
i'd love to be able to consistently get long crosses/headers to work, mind you.

I think the new PES on the Wii looks potentially amazing.

yeh, the controls (apart from shake nunchuck to shoot WTF) look like they have actually been thought through for once

hmm... I wasn't even thinking about the wii version, but that does look interesting (in a new, confusing but challenging way). I wish the wii had demos! I just may pick this is. It kind of looks like they stuck a little rts into a sports game (looks like it would play even better with mouse and keyboard?).
Is there online play (that actually works)? Is it in 480p widescreen?

I picked up the wii version - didn't have time to play a lot, but I really REALLY liked the controls. The game looks okay when you're on the pitch, but the cut scenes and celebrations really look like ass. Why hasn't microsoft or sony released a copy of the wii controls for their machines? Then for games like this you could have the option of whatever control scheme you want to try out, plus nice HD graphics & a decent online service...

Played this some more over the weekend. Passing is a joy with the wii controls - really works beautifully. Still haven't tried online

If you're sick of crossing, try cutting inside onto your other foot. Ie if you were shooting left to right, running down the left wing parallel to the penalty area and a defender was keeping up with you, you'd press down. A lot of the time this confuses the defender and you end up with space further into the area to make a short pass or shoot.
i.e. "the Robben"

ie 'why the fuck has nobody shown aaron lennon this', actually.

ps sorry still playing this on PS2 for another couple weeks at least, so no help to you on the patches
Tracer - which version of PES do you have? It's easy on PS3/PC, not so easy on 360... this thread has instructions...http://www.pesgaming.com/showthread.php?t=73534

make sure the option file is updated to work with the latest Konami updates.

ok nice, thank you!
btw i tried the whole "run toward the center at a right angle to the touchline" with my winger and it's fucking magic
another huge, huge tip on defense: when you really need to close somebody down, HIT SQUARE. this will double or triple-team the guy with the ball. it's almost like cheating when done right. if done wrong you expose yourself hugely, of course.
i am a bit upset that most of my goals appear, with the benefit of replay, to be due less to me unbridled genius and more to do with woeful defensive lapses by the computer. i really hate to but i might have to switch up to "pro" even though i know i will get housed and everything will stop being enjoyable and i'll go back to regular and just whip crosses in again and again.

Okay I haven't really played, or been interested in, footy computer games for years. But I read this line from the new PES 2017 game:
Adaptive AI – For the first time in a football game, the AI will learn how you play and adapt accordingly
Have footy games really never bothered to even evolve to this level until now ?!
