Crazy loud mastering job.

I enjoyed them live yeeears ago (2001). Was kinda fun. But records and current live shows are just so...average.
― Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:11 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, but they've now perfectly ressurected the spirit of 1985.
― sexyDancer, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

― W4LTER, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link
Awesome fucking album, great band.
That said, I'm not fond of the album's mix. The drums deserve better, and the vocals are a tad too loud in many places (very distracting). You can tell they wanted to be all like "Elisa IS a great writer, see? We told you so"! Also, she seems a little too concerned with rhyming...I enjoy her free-form rants more. They need to mix in a fucking 20-30 minute jam on their next outing instead of limiting themselves to such traditional song lengths.
I sound like a hater, but trust me, I love this album. They never cease to surprise me, and I think we are still far from seeing all this band has to offer. They're one of the few bands that excite me nowadays. I just think they still need some polishing for the official releases. At the least, they need better engineers in the studio.

you're right about the rhyming.
bedroom door aJAR gonna make you a sTAR.

They never start to surprise me. New kids, old noise.

Lee Ranaldo has turned Thee Magik Markers into a 3rd rate Cat Power. Those drums sound like cardboard boxes.
― Homework Undone, Friday, 19 October 2007 20:16 (sixteen years ago) link
This sounds intriguing. How is it like 1985?
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 19 October 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link
This band is so raging

I love the current Markers action, they are just a great band.
Pretty good interview with Elisa in Rookie Mag of all things (no slight, just don't read it much and this is the first time I have been pointed their way for a weirdo music thing): http://rookiemag.com/2013/11/magik-markers-mirrorless/

This album feels....really pro forma how
I want an Elisa solo album ala Jim Morrison's An American Prayer, where it's mostly just voice
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 14 November 2013 17:27 (ten years ago) link
Haven't even heard the record yet, just relating to the last few shows I have seen, which I loved. Gotta go listen to the record I guess.

new album is killer

raymond, have you heard the 200 Years records..? Elisa & Ben Chasney, mostly vocals & acoustic guitar. really nice. they were great live, too.
― ian, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 02:34 (ten years ago) link
really like 200 years thanks for mentioning that i didnt know it existed. still need to hear the new 1
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 02:40 (ten years ago) link
Man, Elisa's new record is great. Not sure what I was expecting, but kind of hits on everything I would hope she would get up to on a solo record. Catchy as hell but some really cool moves to dig into as well.

Yep, loving this. Of course, Elisa can do no wrong in this house.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Thursday, 23 October 2014 13:54 (nine years ago) link
Hah yeah Elisa is the greatest. I mean, watching her play guitar live is one of my favorite show experiences in the world, as she is an alchemist and magician and I have no idea how she does it but it is astounding every time. So cool to see the songwriting side manifest itself so well too though.
― grandavis, Thursday, 23 October 2014 14:01 (nine years ago) link
This album is so, so, so good.

2020 is such a perfect rock record for these times, all weird and insular and shut-in and downbeat
