Teen dies in ATV accident
MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — A teenager is dead after a Sunday night accident involving his all-terrain vehicle.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley has identified the teen as 16-year-old Clay Lee Thompson of Smithville.

According to the coroner, Thompson was riding his four-wheeler around 9 p.m. on Pearce Chapel Road when he lost control one mile west of the Alabama line.

The ATV went into the woods and down an embankment.

A teen riding with Thompson ran to a nearby home for help, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department was called. Deputies found the wreckage and Thompson's body.

Gurley says Thompson died from a head injury.

No, that wasn't my point at all. Both deaths were on ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), which are probably pretty uncommon in the UK but are ubiquitous neck-snappers that don't require licenses to operate around here. Often, kids of single-digit age zoom around on these things, and they're considered expensive toys, closer to go-karts than the dangerous vehicles they are.

WilliamC, Sunday, 1 June 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

oh wait, are they quad bikes? yeah they're pretty risky to hoon around in

Yeah, quad bikes is another name for them apparently.

WilliamC, Sunday, 1 June 2014 21:04 (nine years ago) link

Oh man. Don't me started on ATVs. I used to work at a hospital specifically for people with brain and/or spinal cord injuries. Do you know how many patients we had who had tumbled off an ATV? Like, all of them.

I have a nephew whose drunken ATVing resulted in his girlfriend's death; he's really, really lucky he just got five years of house arrest (still ongoing) instead of prison time. I really hate those things, and seeing stories about two ATV deaths on one day last weekend hit me kinda sideways.

"In addition, authorities in Jefferson County said they searched an area where neighbors said they heard someone bang on a house, causing dogs to bark, but his scent was not picked up. Deputies did not specify where this area was.

Buffington reportedly escaped the Arkansas Department of Corrections Pine Bluff Unit Saturday night. While he escaping, he is said to have taken a hostage for a brief time. Authorities believe he is armed with a shotgun and a bag ammo."

So they still haven't caught the escaped murderer in Arkansas yet. Prison officials are trying to help the public keep a lookout though.

You see, when dude escaped, he looked like this:

This is a weird fuckin' state.

TUESDAY:

Last night, Paul MacLeod, owner of Graceland Too, which roadsideamerica.com calls "a manic floor-to-ceiling (including the ceiling) tribute to The King", shot and killed a man, 28 year old Dwight David Taylor.

MacLeod, famous for claiming to drink at least 24 cans of Coca Cola a day and seldom sleeping, answered the door to his 24-7, 365 days-a-year house-turned-Elvis museum (which you can tour for a mere $5) to find Taylor. Evening visitors are nothing new for MacLeod. Graceland Too is locally famous as a late night destination for local college students looking for kicks or an injection of kitsch to help drive a buzz.

Taylor asked for money. MacLeod say no. Then Taylor wedged his foot into the door jam of the front door of the shrine as MacLeod tried to close it. When Taylor began to force the door open, MacLeod shot him once in the chest with his .45 caliber handgun.

Taylor was pronounced dead at 10:41 PM, shortly after police responded to a 911 call, his body just inside the doorway to MacLeod's home.

MacLeod was questioned by police and released. No charges are expected.

THURSDAY:

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (WTVA) — The owner of Graceland Too is dead.

Marshall County Coroner James Anderson confirmed the death of 71-year-old Paul McLeod.

His death comes two days after Dwight David Taylor Jr., 28, was shot and killed at the attraction.

Arkansas courthouse shut down by fleas reopens

ASHDOWN, Ark. (AP) - A Southwest Arkansas courthouse has reopened after it was closed for flea fumigation.

Little River County officials closed the historic county courthouse on Friday and employees got a half day off with pay.

County Judge Clayton Castleman tells the Texarkana Gazette (http://bit.ly/1t213wu ) that the courthouse was besieged by fleas for weeks. He worries that squirrels roaming the courthouse lawn and trees have been transporting the pests.

Castleman says employees have been going home with welts and that six previous attempts to spray the building were unsuccessful.

He says the fumigation was needed to break the cycle of fleas hatching in the courthouse.

The more than 100-year-old building reopened Monday and employees have reported being flea-free.

The website now redirects to galt.io, a “members-only network of makers inspired by ‘Galt’s Gulch’ from Ayn Rand’s classic novel ‘Atlas Shrugged,’” according to the site. (You can see his old radio show site by clicking here.)

The details for non-members are a bit vague, but earlier this year the Business Journal did a small write-up on the “Libertarian tech start-up,” which raised more than $590,000 through a crowdfunding campaign.

“Galt.io is developing an online network that lets members create a ’cause,’ such as fighting alcohol regulation or public funding for the Minnesota Vikings stadium, and gain backing for that cause in the form of virtual currency called Galtcoins,” the Business Journal says.
