they should have just had a scene every other show of him decapitating a horse; would have broken up some of the sexposition

After the first ten minutes of last night's ep, I think I'd rather just have the pointless nudity. In some ways less painful than the pseudo-porn build-up we were getting with Grey Worm and his lady. When they were alone in the temple, I was just waiting for the porn-funk to start up.

that they kept recasting the mountain hurts his ability to be a consistent and memorable malevolence

max, Monday, 2 June 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

anyway i felt as excited and gripped by the fight scene on the show as i did by the scene in the books--still the highlight of the entire series for me--though i think the excessively gory watermelon explosion at the end kinda undercuts it and like balls says the "big pizza!" reaction from tyrion is kinda

max, Monday, 2 June 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

they should've cut to black on the head explode and the scream, and then after the credits flash up tyrion saying "oh boy" and then next week is an episode of quantum leap

lol why are people calling this a bait and switch
Guy literally dancing around a hulk of a dude arrogantly proclaiming blah blah blah and not paying attention
Who thought he'd come out of that OK?

that beetle-crushing speech was awful. Like I get Dinklage has minimum screentime requirements and needed something to do, but I read people saying it was long, fast-forwarded about five minutes and he was still shiting on?

Actually I'm pretty interested in Tommen. Also, after a week of wondering what would happen to Robin, it's cool that Littlefinger sees him as a protege and potential king.

Littlefingers plans for robin involve getting him killed when he's learning to be a man or expand the vale in his name and then kill him when it's useful. My opinion at least.

It's fucking GREAT!

For someone playing as long of a game as Littlefinger has he seemed pretty unprepared for the aftermath following him pushing Lysa out the moon door. Sansa save was pure luck on his part.

Maybe so! But at least he recognizes the opportunity there whereas most people would just see a little weird creep.

idk, whole point of Littlefinger's character seems to be that you make your own luck, he's manoeuvred her into a position where she'd be bound to support him. You can see how after everything she's been through Sansa has become psychologically dependent on him, purely by virtue of the fact that he's the first person she's been around since the start of the show that wasn't actively trying to hurt her.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 June 2014 21:47 (nine years ago) link

well tyrion definitely had her best interests at heart but had already lost his power by that point and you can see why a teenager wouldn't really see the positives in being married to a midget

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 June 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

ah shit yeah i actually forgot about the whole Tyrion thing. think the distinction between hated-Lannister-enemy and old-friend-of-the-family is important for explaining why Sansa might trust LF more though.

I'm actually really interested to see where Sansa/LF goes, in as much as there might be the possibility for him to do something disinterested and maybe even decent for her at some point at the expense of his plans, depending on how genuine his decidedly creepy affection for her runs. Otoh she might just continue to be a vehicle for his machinations.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 June 2014 21:57 (nine years ago) link

yeah it's because he's a Lannister.

maester pycell was cracking me up w his intro

same, though I wish Tywin cueing up the band to interrupt could happen in more scenes (like the one just before it).

gyac, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:04 (nine years ago) link

I'm down with most things the show does but based on my memory of the first two books they do miss on the mountain a bit. his name is evoked all over the place and he's the real manifestation of the evil wing of the lannisters almost more than anything else, this monster they give carte blanche to do whatever he desires in their name and he feels in the novels like a leader. In this show he's effective but he also comes off more like a gimp they keep in a cage and let loose for duels. His scene a couple weeks back where he's just hacking prisoners to pieces was almost called back to w/tyrion's beetle story.

otm

i kinda wish they had showed as little of him onscreen until this battle (which I have not watched yet), just to give them time to build his rep and get the casting/look right.

gbx, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

That's putting the situation... delicately.

the moon door is such a ridiculous element, feels like very lazy writing to have this giant death trap looming in every scene taking place at the vale. as if it weren't clear enough that any character could die at any time, let's just throw this portal to oblivion in the middle of the room and all it takes is a little push for anyone to go for a fly

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:14 (nine years ago) link

TMFD from the Viper there, he deserved that. Dude was basically doing stepovers in his own penalty area from the start.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it's crazy, its like the moon door might have actually come directly from the source material.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:18 (nine years ago) link

iirc in the source material it is an actual door not a big gaping hole in the floor you might accidentally step into while reading email on your iPhone

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:20 (nine years ago) link

Depiction of the Moon Door is no problem for me, quite a fan of bad guys in general having Jabba's-Palace-style trap-doors in the floor through which underlings can be thrown at a moment's notice.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:24 (nine years ago) link

Easy way of telling if someone is trustworthy or not is if they have a moon door in their crib.

oh ok it's from the books so it can't be bad writing

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

Sure it can be bad writing by GRRM, your post just made it sound like it was a conscious decision for the TV show for visual reinforcement of the implied threat. I was just responding to that aspect.

it's ridiculous but kinda awesome and campy too. definitely on the sillier end of things for a show so enamored with nihilistic violence

xp - did not mean to imply that with my post, i am not a book-bro so didn't realize the depiction was different in the first place

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

Tommen isn't an interesting character at all but as the kid who would be king it wouldn't have hurt for the show to have reminded us that he existed every now and again.

I'm pissed they decided to age up Tommen because (not really a spoiler) my favorite part of the li'l kiddo's rule was how childishly excited he was to sign his name on whatever royal documents were set in front of him.

"grrm's world is like medieval europe except no one ever dies of sickness or through mundane yet"

Except Khal Drogo?

Loved Tyrion asking for books about morons.

Still not getting how the moon door is bad writing. Why wouldn't you have one? I wouldn't be surprised if some real castles did have something similar.

I was under the impression The Mountain died.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Cersei getting a satisfying death but I doubt it will be as good as Joffrey or Lysa's.

I was very fond of Oberyn (I'd like to see that actor in other stuff) and that was difficult to swallow but it's a welcome change after endless streams of unconvincing survival in so many stories. Peter Jackson's King Kong and Hobbit are terrible for that and even for a kid's film Pixar's Up really takes the piss (as a child it would have upset me because I'd think it was a lie and that the "real" characters all fallen to their deaths. I hated The Labyrinth because I knew the "real" good guys all drowned in shit or lived an unspeakably horrible life of smelling so terrible that they couldn't stop vomiting. I don't know if most children are like that but I could never brush off any morbid implication, all heroes really fell off the cliff edge and died), it's a real pet hate of mine.

My brother assures me that there is a string of amazing things just about to happen. I'm excited.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 02:39 (nine years ago) link

Cersei needs to outlive pretty much everyone including all her kids as max punishment

So did LF and Sansa bang or what? He reached a creepy peak last night with "the first time I saw you you were just a child" but that shot of her as silhouette with the sun flashing behind her was superb.

Jesus Christ, the punch followed by the teeth scattering across the floor. Just the sound effect alone!

I can handle almost anything gore-wise, but teeth are always a real sore spot.

That gummy scream - fucked me up good.

"grrm's world is like medieval europe except no one ever dies of sickness or through mundane yet"

Didn't Robert Baratheon die from being gored by a wild boar while hunting, though it took him several days to die, so presumably it got infected?
(Might be remembering this wrong...)

This show is boring now isn't it.

Severed heads not really cutting it for me any more especially when they happen at 'totally unexpected' moments. They should rename it Yawn of Yawns.

Only joking, it's still good. I guess what I found strange about the whole Oberyn thing is that I didn't really get that he was necessarily supposed to be a sympathetic character. At least when he was introduced, he came off as a bit of a sleazeball so I was surprised when immediately people started rooting for him.

And yeah, that was totally a Princess Bride tribute, wasn't it?

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 11:18 (nine years ago) link

Maybe they feel like me that all those feel wish fulfilling happy stories need to be corrected? Maybe we'll get to see a Jennifer Connelly lookalike drown in shit; talking dogs, an old man and little boy fall off mountains and several other bleaker versions.

I doubt it will happen but there is still time for Oberyn's wife to run screaming to his side and revive him with the Lord Of Light.
Thinking about it more, with White Walkers, the whole Ice/Fire thing, maybe rebirth on either side will eventually become a bigger thing? Reborn Ned Stark fighting white walkers? Doubt it, but I'm sure the Lord Of Light stuff will become central because it has been proven real even if it isn't what the worshippers think it is.

I still predict that some of the Lannisters will eventually be killed by the Stark children. I think this story has wish fulfilment too. Imagine Tywin seeing Arya again.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:17 (nine years ago) link

Meant to say "feel good" in first line.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:18 (nine years ago) link

Well I guess he'd have a few more holes in himself to play with.

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:35 (nine years ago) link

Lord of Light would have to be an expert taxidermist to help Oberyn out...
