no i mean if you think the plot is needlessly plodding around and wasting time NOW...well....this is what I consider the peppy parts still

I don't understand how Stannis got his armies onto the other side of the wall.

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:38 (nine years ago) link

They got on the 4:40 to Brighton

so Wildlings and zombies can't build boats?

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:44 (nine years ago) link

I mean why doesn't everyone just go around the wall?

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:44 (nine years ago) link

Well they can kill a ship and then make it into a white walker or wight ship

, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:46 (nine years ago) link

Its not really a white walker anymore tho, more of a white 'floater'

, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

why don't the wildlings build a huge catapault for themselves and parachutes that they can yank the cord on when they pass over the wall

christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 16 June 2014 15:50 (nine years ago) link

If you want it spelled out tho, the Wildlings were fine with living above the wall until the white walkers came now they just wanna flee from the white walkers

Nobody goes from south of the Wall to above the wall because why would you

, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

I just... why build a wall you can just sail around

this episode was p good but I gotta say the show's two most sympathetic protagonists essentially running away from the action to parts unknown doesn't really bode well narratively...

Remember when Ygritte thought the little windmill was a castle? I don't think the wildlings have advanced enough boat technology...

I'm not worried about it lessening their roles or involvement in the conflicts myself.

Evan, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:12 (nine years ago) link

i alwyas figured it was implicit that the responsibility/purpose of the nights watch folks at eastwatch-by-the-sea and at the shadow tower was to keep wildlings from going around the ends of the wall

the shadow tower isn't even at the ocean, theres just like a river and some hard-to-pass mountains or something on the west side of the wall. its dumb

ciderpress, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:13 (nine years ago) link

sailing to attack somewhere is much much harder than advancing via land the wall makes sense ffs people

lag∞n, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

not to be picky but they wouldn't necessarily be attacking, just sailing.

Evan, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

i mean shit just sail around the great wall the oceans right there u idiots

lag∞n, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

the wall is more of a deterrent than a solution to the wildlings & its heavily implied that its original purpose wasn't to keep wildlings out, it was to keep worse stuff out. its a magical wall.

ciderpress, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

white walkers dont sail thats why theyre called walkers

lag∞n, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:20 (nine years ago) link

am I wrong but I thought the wall might have initially been built to keep out the white walkers?

As far as I can tell, there is a watchtower to the east keeping an eye out for ships, and a lack of trees to the west, meaning getting a fleet would be really tough.

Yeah and after the white walkers went dormant for thousands of years it became repurposed and used to fight wildlings

Think a big reason for the show's success so far has been its po-faced realpolitik grimness

For me, this time 1E6.

so, tywin and the hound were both in the bathroom, doing number twos, when we dropped in on them last night. note to other GoT characters: do not under any circumstances go to the bathroom! hold it in!

Anticipation of the finale, hyperventilating, etc. xp

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Monday, 16 June 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

I'm not that into the realpolitik so much as the Arthurian legend filtered through the realpolitik. Feels kinda fresh and mythical at the same time.

ryan, Monday, 16 June 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

idk this finale, and maybe the whole season have just made me realize that it's just going to drag on for soooooooooo long

like all I want is for arya to see jon snow or bran (and vice versa) and none of that is ever going to happen

and now I'm kinda like, I don't know if I'm even looking forward to more of this?

not that any of it was bad I think i'm just realizing how boring it all is when you step back. idk idk maybe I just need to lay down

In this respect they're being very faithful to the show, now you know how the readers feel.

So what's the deal w Shae? In the books is it clear what her true feelings for Tyrion are?

Mordy, Monday, 16 June 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

She's a much shallower and more nakedly opportunistic person in the books, but that's being filtered through Tyrion's POV. That said, I don't think that GRRM really does a lot of interesting stuff with unreliable narrators (with one exception that the show hasn't explored at all).

For Ygritte

Big wet tears filled her eyes. “I never meant those things I said, the queen made me. Please. Your father frightens me so.” She sat up, letting the blanket slide down to her lap. Beneath it she was naked, but for the chain about her throat. A chain of linked golden hands, each holding the next.
Tyrion asks Shae if she ever enjoyed their time together — if she ever cared for his embrace, if she ever truly loved him. The answer she gives doubles as her own death sentence.
“More than anything,” she said, “my giant of Lannister.”
That was the worst thing you could have said, sweetling.
Tyrion slid a hand under his father’s chain, and twisted. The links tightened, digging into her neck. “For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm,” he said. He gave cold hands another twist as the warm ones beat away his tears.

yeah, i definitely am never gonna read any more of these books

For once, his father did what Tyrion asked him. The proof was the sudden stench, as his bowels loosed in the moment of death. Well, he was in the right place for it, Tyrion thought. But the stink that filled the privy gave ample evidence that the oft-repeated jape about his father was just another lie.

That was an element missing from the show
