A thread for the Cure reissues

Have I ever explained why I never liked this song?

I read the lyrics before I actually heard it, so I had a mental image in my mind of a minor key creepfest with harder-edged guitars and more snarling than yelping. Hearing the gossamer popfest, all-out chirpathon that is the actual song was the biggest Cure-related disappointment of my life; I was expecting "The Snakepit Pt 0".

Also the delivery of the lyrics is really, really embarrassing.

I knew Mzui would come through. ;-)

(Let me interrupt this thread to say that Unto Ashes' reworking of "The Drowning Man" on their new album Grave Blessings is absolutely brilliant and that Dan has to hear this thing ASAP.)

Patience. Also, e-mail might be better if I knew the best one to send it to, hint hint.

Whilst clearing out the other day I found a Pornography era rip off that I wrote/recorded to break in my new fangled digital recorder, It doesn't have vocals sadly, maybe Dan would be up to the job? This mail is fine btw Ned *hint*

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 19:43 (eighteen years ago) link

but the vocal delivery is great! another high school waking-up favorite was "under the milky way" but i only had the 7" of that so i actually had to get out of bed to put it on.

I believe I've had this debate before with Mr. deX! on Usenet, but the one song that has to go on HOTD is def. "Screw".

I'm pretty sure there will be tons of outtakes and live versions of "Push" on the re-issue, seeing how RS seems to enjoy that song. Hah...

The Head on the Door Bonus Disc -- The 'Push' Sessions

"Well we thought about putting in the demos for "The Baby Screams" and "Sinking" but nobody seems to like those songs much."

*noise of explosion from the Boston area*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Getting rid of "Screw" would make the Baby Jesus cry.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

In more ways than one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Just yesterday I received the three reissues (I substituted Bowie - Diamond Dogs double deluxe for the first album, as I can't believe they omitted songs from it) from BMG in a buy one, get three free deal. Total cost with shipping/handling, $46.86. I got $14 trade-in value for selling the old versions, so it cost me $8.21 per double set, not bad.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't believe it either!

which one are you counting as the first of "three", Three Imaginary Boys or Seventeen Seconds? Nothing's been omitted from any of the albums, but the failure to stick Killing An Arab on the bonus dsc for TIB is more than a little baffling.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:24 (eighteen years ago) link

TIB != BDC, FNB.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:32 (eighteen years ago) link

The Remastered Pornography has blown my mind. Didn’t get any of these until June/July of this year at Amoeba for cheep.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 1 September 2005 06:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I gotta say those remasters really bring those albums to life. Pornography was always an album I respected but didn't play often. I'm on the fifth spin of that, and the others aren't far behind. I mentioned on the Siouxsie thread that I sometimes worry I'm wasting my money on remasters if the sound isn't significantly improved. I feel like a sucker, drawn like a moth to a flame -- extra liner notes and a louder mix. But The Cure remasters were totally justified.

I wonder if upcoming Comsat Angels reissues on Renascent will be improved too?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 November 2005 00:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Just patiently waiting for said "THOTD" and "KMKMKM" reissues, for vastly improved pop sound.

And waiting for summer 2006 to come around when they drop the current drummer (Jason?) and lure back Boris.

By the way, as far as acronymns go, "THOTD" and "KMKMKM" read like Aphex Twin/Autechre song titles. Or Voivod/Magma albums.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:17 (eighteen years ago) link

don't like demos or live tracks but unreleased or bsides are amazing quality.
should i buy "every cd" or "join the dots" or both.
i mean i'll buy every cd but is it worth it to buy "join the dots'too.

retroboy, Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:04 (eighteen years ago) link

should re-issues have all bsides from all singles ?

retroboy, Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:06 (eighteen years ago) link

so chaps, i need your advice. i have yet to dip a toe into these redux releases, but i'd like to. bearing in mind that seventeen seconds is officially my favourite album of all time ever, i'm a little wary of sullying my opinion with digital remasters, alternative versions etc. looking at the tracklistings, the pornography redux looks more appealing in terms of extras.

your thoughts, then? surely the top outtakes will be righteously fucking insane? and thotd and kmkmkm might just out-pop the poppiest poppies, if done "properly"? eeeeep!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I say start with 'Faith', where the rematered sound makes the biggest difference IMO. The extras are not really essential but probably more interesting than those on 'Pornography'. Also, "Carnage Visors"

Yes. The tracks on Join the Dots won't be on the reissues.

Okay, I got an urge out of nowhere to hear All Cats Are Grey, so I pulled out (dusted off) my copy of "Faith" and listened on my discman as I walked at length around the neighborhood. And I really do not believe how good Faith still sounds, even today. I expected to be really sick of it to be honest...I'd played it 60 billion times already, but to my surprise, it still holds up very nicely.

But I mean no harm to 17 Seconds, either. I will never imagine a world where Faith exists without 17 Seconds.

Okay so no I have not bought the damn reissues, but money and time can change a lot of things, it's really remarkable.

Any news on the next batch? Will "Japanese Whispers" by a stand alone album, or "The Top" bonus tracks?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 26 December 2005 13:57 (eighteen years ago) link

If you scroll up just 2 pages on this very thread, Robert says that Blue Sunshine, The Top, Head On The Door and Kiss Me are scheduled for (a northern hemisphere, one presumes) Spring 2006, and three posts above yours is someone reiterating that nothing from Join The Dots will be on the reissues.

(I'd suspect the A-sides of The Walk, Love Cats and LGTB are going to be orphaned like Killing An Arab, but who knows.)

Nothing new per se to report but I just heard about this -- it's an iTunes UK package called 4-Play which is half various selections from the initial reissues and half new interviews and rerecordings from the Mike Hedges sessions last year of the trio version of the group before Porl rejoined. They do the title tracks of each of the four albums. Allegedly this is only available for purchase for UK folks but I was able to switch stores easily enough when prompted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 January 2006 05:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I think you can switch stores for viewing purposes, but they check the billing address of your credit card to keep you from buying stuff from another country's iTMS

i have both the greatest hits and both are brillaint ( apart from the last four songs on galore).
should i buy every cd reissue or join the dots .i'm not going to buy both.
and thanks for the dvd easter egg list.

retroman, Monday, 16 January 2006 06:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Join The Dots, for def, though it trails off heavily by disc 4 - the bonus discs so far have been a mix of great and very much fans-only. Known demos suggest the quality might get less patchy as the 80s go on, but the first couple of discs of JTD are some of the best Cure ever, and should be well-matched to your singles-collection preference (note that there are two chronological singles comps - what I assume you have - and the Greatest Hits is a different package).

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 16 January 2006 07:09 (eighteen years ago) link

(I'd suspect the A-sides of The Walk, Love Cats and LGTB are going to be orphaned like Killing An Arab, but who knows.)

I find that hard to believe, as "Lovecats" and "The Walk" are both among their biggest hits (and "Let's Go To Bed" - my all time favourite Cure track - was also a commercial breakthrough of sorts, although it was just a small hit). I guess they will be put on some second disc, which is fine enough.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Well since they included the "Charlotte Sometimes" A-side on the Faith reissue, I doubt they will orphan those songs. I fear that "Killing An Arab" was orphaned for other reasons.

jonviachicago, Monday, 16 January 2006 14:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Well since they appeared on the Greatest Hits (unlike Charlotte), maybe they won't bother.
