Matthew Kory:

MLB's headline was "Price proves too much for Yanks" which was the first time in human history those words were written in that order.

Brian Roberts is the first Yankees player with four extra-base hits in a game since Alex Rodriguez on April 18, 2005.

@BenLindbergh
Before Stephen Drew's debut at 2B, let's pause to appreciate Derek Jeter's 20-season streak of posting negative FRAAs

feel like jeter's being treated like a pitcher in the NL, every time he gets an important hit the news articles treat it like an amazing once-a-season event

I mentioned on another thread that I started watching a DVD of Fidrych's Monday night start against the Yankees in 1976. Before the game, all the Yankees introduce themselves (probably still new then). Billy Martin goes last: "Billy Martin, manager, born in Berkeley, California, died in New York City." And that was in '76, before the real fun started.

I'm down for hating on Jeter as much as anyone - but how much of that can be blamed on Jeter? Ultimately it's Girardi's decision - and I wouldn't be surprised if the front office pressured him to make sure Jeter was front and centre as often as possible.

If the Yankees want to tank their playoff chances so that Jeter can be front and centre, it's fine with me.

Lots of HOF-level players batted lower in the lineup, shifted to an easier defensive position, or accepted less than full time roles late in their careers. I think it's generally agreed that Jeter has refused to do at least two of the three. If he was really the selfless team leader who would do anything to win (according to his reputation) then he wouldn't be hitting second every day.

I remember Mays playing first for the Mets

(and how painful it was to watch him play CF with no legs left)

(xpost) At least in the first game, the Mets had Mays hitting third. Nice ovation: they sometimes had farewell tours then, too.

May hit .211 with 6 HR in the '73 regular season. Hitting him third is a testament to Yogi's managerial eccentricity and the Mets' woeful offense that year.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 7 September 2014 05:17 (nine years ago) link

Mays hit leadoff in '72 for the Mets fairly often, he managed a .402 OBP at age 41. Fell off considerably the next year.

also if the yankees are eliminated it'll be the first year since the strike (and the year before) that neither they nor the red sox qualify for the postseason.

after a year of retirement, sure

from BP podcast FB wall:

Jeter is on the brink of doing it! His SLG is now just .001 higher than his OBP (.304 and .303). With a few more bad games, he can finish with a sub .250 BA. sub .600 OPS, and a OBP higher than his SLG. You can do it, Derek.
