Was Rude big in the US or UK? I've never heard it before. It's awful alright.

Two Princes is better by all means. I don't think it's one of the best songs of the 90's (not close) but I do believe it defines the decade pretty well. It kind of captures the blend of pop that dominated the decade. It could fit in every montage scene from every 90's family film or sitcom.

dude it's about to go No. 1 here (here being the US)

This could do for the word "rude" what Alanis did for "ironic" 20 years ago. But while irony as a concept might not get introduced until 10th grade lit class, most people learn what being rude is when they're quite young and why does this guy not seem to understand it?

"Rude" was originally based on a real-life situation. The lead singer of Magic!, Nasri, had been in an unhealthy relationship with a previous girlfriend. One day, after his girlfriend was mad at him and started to become harsh, Nasri began singing the lines "Why you gotta be so rude/ don't you know I'm human too" in what he describes a "dark vibe." However, the concept did not work with the band well so it was revised and eventually made into a man talking to the disapproving father of his lover.[1]

Genre: reggae fusion

I hope this means the girlfriend was still there, becoming harsh.

I was half-expecting the next sentence to be how they found the girlfriend's body in a closet, all deformed like she'd watched the video from The Ring

Good company here:

No 'reg'-ular No. 1: "Rude" (the 1,037th Hot 100 No. 1 all-time) brings reggae stylings back to the chart's summit, marking a rarity. Other reggae rulers in the Hot 100's nearly 56-year history: Sean Paul's "Get Busy" (2003); Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel" (both in 2001); Ini Kamoze's "Here Comes the Hotstepper" (1994); fellow Canadian Snow's "Informer" (1993); Maxi Priest's "Close to You" (1990); Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff," written by reggae king Bob Marley (1974); and Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" (1972).

(Reader, and Canada's own, Blair Buchta, recently pointed out in an email that "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker & the Aces was one of the first reggae hits to reach the top 10, rising to No. 9 in 1969.)

The guitar solo in "Rude" has some pretty cool texture for a top 40 song in 2014.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 17:17 (nine years ago) link

Important info, listen up

"Magic" becomes the first word to serve as the title of a No. 1 Hot 100 song and an act with a Hot 100 leader (excluding the exclamation point at the end of the band's name …)

oh my gosh what is this cocked-wah monstrosity

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

it's like the guitarist spent hours in the studio trying to achieve a tone that could rival the band's frontman's voice for sheer obnoxiousness

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

... although honestly, it's the groovelessness that grates, far more than the tone

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link

the only single good thing about that solo is the singer isn't singing but that's only good in a twilight zone world where you're forced to listen to the song and not able to shut it off.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link

hahaha....it's a bizarre solo, for sure.

i just can't figure out why i don't hate everything about this. even the solo i find a bit endearing.

the worst part of the whole package is *watching* the singer guy. as long as i don't closely watch the video, i'm ok.

I don't even hate "rude" and find the "this is so unquestionably creepy!" angle really, really overstated -- it went No. 1, because a lot of listeners probably find it charming

katherine, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

(i.e. it's aimed at the crowd who hears "can I have your daughter for the rest of my life" and thinks "what a romantic proposal, and asking her father's permission, like an old-fashioned gentleman," not "WOW POSSESSIVE #RUDE")

katherine, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

That creeps me out more! Like it's a deadening reminder that a huge part of the population totally digs all those like #BeARealMan #RomanticMenDoThis #It'sRomanticToBeOwnedByYourMan type hashtag advice blogs etc.

and let's not forget: the lead singer has a horrible haircut. She'd be spending the rest of her life with Chris Cornell in '99.

In a Grantland article, Stephen Hyden compared the guitar solo in "Rude" to Michael Winslow making guitar noises into a microphone. That's all I picture now.

Xp yeah I'm sure it's just coincidence, but it made me laff

Also, re: the charge of Breezy collaboration: it's obviously a little different if you're a young hired-gun trying to make a name in the industry (&/or make rent) than if you're Busta Rhymes... I don't think I would write them off entirely on those grounds, if I didn't already previously detest their music.
