didn't even realize season 2 had started. must be watching less TV or something, or has the media totally ignored it this season?

akm, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

well aside from the salacious angle and a bit abt the leads' performances, i don't think it got a lot of press before. probably a bad time, mid-summer, not a lot of attention on tv anyway.

it got the cover of Entertainment Weekly recent, whatever that's worth. i do wish it had a higher profile, but even the biggest Showtime series seem to take a while to catch on, so as long as it stays on the air and gets a little Emmy love i think it's doing well enough.

finally caught up with this. bit of a jarring jump a few years into the future but they were going to have to advance at some point.

Already been renewed for S3 for anyone who was concerned.

Last few episodes were really good

Can I start with season two?

calstars, Saturday, 30 August 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

The end of the most recent episode was really intriguing.

Was thinking that the lesbian subplot was a weak point but I'll deserve judgement for now.

The young maid is so beautiful.

lesbian subplot with bettie or with with virginia and dr. lepaul?

akm, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

you can't start with season 2, you need to watch season 1

akm, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:22 (nine years ago) link

We started this a while ago and are a few eps in. It's OK and the cast is good, but at least early on it's struggling to make the characters more than surface interesting, though I understand it improves.

The lesbian thing with Sarah Silverman.

three weeks pass...

started in on Season 1 - not bad, although the speechifying got to be a bit much. sex scenes are suitably lolzy

I don't think we made it through the first season yet. Just seemed a little too ... TV-y. Like, it was focus group designed to fit several boxes. Retro fashion factor? Check. Titillation factor? Check. Oh my God, look at the way people used to act factor? Check. And so on. Surely it must get better than this, but I suspect I need to see all of season one before, characters/themes established, it can move on and develop.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 17:18 (nine years ago) link

based on one episode (lol), agreed on all that

love Lizzy Caplan but damn she got super-skinny/scrawny. bah Hollywood.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 17:21 (nine years ago) link

I never noticed any weight difference. Never realised that was her in Hot Tub Time Machine.

I don't think I saw the earliest episodes but I don't think the retro thing is important in this at all (I probably said that above). I think it's mainly worthwhile for the two lead actors.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

three episodes in this is pretty good. The most objectionable thing I reacted to was the totally fake and unconvincing 50s comic in episode 2 (surely they could have used an ACTUAL period-specific comic is that really that hard).

All the male characters are totally loathsome w pretty much zero redeeming qualities, which is kind of depressing.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 2 October 2014 15:17 (nine years ago) link

The second season turned out to be a bit of a mess.

Simon H., Thursday, 2 October 2014 15:17 (nine years ago) link

some more episodes in and feel like this is never going to rise above simply okay. the will they/won't they dynamic in place between Masters and Johnson is p stupid (and we already know they will anyway) and not a particular plot trope I can invest any interest in. wish Dr. Stalky McSlapsalot would get run over by a train. Actually wish all the male characters would die horribly for the most part. The nuts and bolts of the sex research is probably the most interesting, which doesn't speak well of how all the main characters are written.

I can't even really make myself watch the last episode of season 2, kind of don't care?

akm, Monday, 6 October 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

I feel like they should do a short season 3 and just wrap this up.

akm, Monday, 6 October 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

i thought this season was pretty good, ended up with a good number of interesting subplots that sometimes were better than the main story. the way they kinda shoehorned Betty into the main cast felt contrived but she's a great character, glad they did it. only thing i disliked about the finale was the JFK dream sequence, which is the exact historical TV drama bullshit this show is usually good at avoiding.

some dude, Monday, 6 October 2014 21:44 (nine years ago) link

two more eps in my queue and i really don't much care anymore.
this was a trainwreck of a season imo
