In this day and age, we are more likely to buy or download songs from iTunes or Amazon or any other site for our phones or tablets or laptops. It makes me wonder if CDs will become obsolete.

My questions are simple: do you still buy CDs? And will they become obsolete? How do you get your music?

I haven't bought a CD in nearly 6 years. I use the Pandora app or I listen to my mp3 player, where I transferred songs from the CD to it or download songs.

CDs are beautiful objects, imo, i don't get the argument that they're aesthetically ugly.
I buy CDs for my car but I should really get around to getting a new head unit with usb/audio ins.

brimstead, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:05 (nine years ago) link

One thing about CDs is, sometimes the jewel cases that contain them crack or become otherwise damaged. Soft cover CD cases of various kinds also suffer from wear and tear. The CDs themselves can be easily scratched if improperly cared for. Digital files may also suffer from degradation. File formats may become obsolete. The files themselves may become unreadable due to "bit rot". A whole store of files may vanish in an instant due to hardware failure. Today's digital content is often stored in "the cloud," a name collectively given to various online content management systems operated by tech firms and other organizations. Loss of control over and responsibility for the "object" or "album" is seen by many as a small price to pay for the convenience of accessing music through these services, or indeed, as an overall benefit.

Despite the furious reaction in some quarters, the union between Apple and U2 is set to strengthen. The partners are now embarking on a “secret project” to create a new digital music format which will compensate musicians for their efforts, and aims to revive the dying art of listening to a complete album.

haha that's a terrible lyric. i actually love MCPB tho. the price paul produced 'it's very stimulating' ep is all-time for me. if you can get over the immaturity of the lyrical themes (i'm immature so it's not an issue for me) his rhymes are pretty insane

the covers of the last lot of albums i have downloaded are quite coincidentally entirely monochrome (gabor lazar & mark fell, byetone, sd laika, alva noto, voigt) although perhaps not so surprising giving the regnant aesthetics of that sort of music

I downloaded all three of those Xerrox albums last week. I'm mildly impressed that he planned out the artwork for his 5-album series more than a decade before the final volume is likely to come out (although it's still possible that he'll throw us a curveball and spell out XERRISCAPE or someshit)

I also downloaded a bunch of messy Scandinavian psych/electronic/freefolk albums (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset Ystävät, Tsembla) with appropriately garish tie-dyed color schemes. salvia is the most embarrassing muse.

I've downloaded so many albums on slsk where track 1 is mistagged with track 6's title, track 3 is mistagged with track 1's title, and track 6 is tagged with track 3's title, etc. is this a Gracenote error, or did someone attempt to tag their music manually (and get it completely wrong)? not to be racist but Spanish/Portuguese-speaking slsk users seem to be the worst offenders w/r/t inaccurate metadata, and I tend to avoid anyone whose music folder is called 'Música'.

Deceptionista combines the relentless unknowability of the real-time internet with ADR's distinct compositional approach, seeking to accelerate detailed, high-definition visions of public intimacies into a form of 21st century psychedelia; which embraces the cognitive derangement of the senses that defines the habits of today's internet browsing constituency.

Far too many people are cynical and exhibit kneejerk, jaded opinions about the current state of music and believe that the music of their youth is the best music there could be. And I think that is indeed utter bullshit.

On the other hand, this attitude is understandable (if unfortunate). I think passion for new music is generally, for most people, concentrated in their early years, maybe up to 20-22 years old. I think my friend and I (he’s in his late 40s and I’m in my mid 50s) are in the minority. We actively seek out and listen to new music in many genres. Using the internet it’s not really that hard to find great new stuff. But I don’t think most people are passionate enough about expanding what they listen to. I think for most adults, music is functional, background, mood-setting stuff. You go with what you know.

Exploring new music takes an investment of time and energy. When you’re young, you have a lot of both. Later on, we have jobs and responsibilities and lots of other distractions from what once was super important—the latest cool music! And there’s the fossilization factor. Getting older can easily be simultaneous with getting set in your ways, no longer interested in new things to get excited about. Again, I can understand that.

But some of us can’t stop the urge to expand and explore and find new gems and classics, and bands that will blow us away all over again. Are we permanent adolescents? I don’t know, but I do know that the “problem” isn’t that there isn’t enough good new music, it’s that there is totally too much!! There is literally not even a small fraction of enough time available to listen to all the new/recent music worthy of attention. That’s the gist of my beef! ;)

PS – I love the Beatles and a lot of that old boomer stuff from my childhood and teen years. I’m a boomer. But can’t I have that AND everything else? This isn’t an either/or situation! I would mourn for Paul McCartney!
