no idea what mineral would be like now but if you like their records enough, sure?

doing awesome in this thread right now
Just discovered this Joyce Manor album and enjoying it a ton. It's notably succinct, 10 bursts of hi quality emoish pop punk in about 19 minutes.

Here's the great opening track, "Christmas Card":

yeah basically i've been playing nothing but Joyce Manor and The Hotelier for several days
― alpine static, Friday, 5 September 2014 03:12 (nine years ago) link
love the JM album, almost as good as their self-titled
― Simon H., Friday, 5 September 2014 03:14 (nine years ago) link
that joyce manor record ROCKS
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 5 September 2014 03:16 (nine years ago) link
they do more with 19 minutes than the vast majority of bands do with 40, it's awesome
― alpine static, Friday, 5 September 2014 03:24 (nine years ago) link
esp love "Victoria" and "Cataline Fight Song," more bands need to be doing great things in 100 seconds or less
― Simon H., Friday, 5 September 2014 03:25 (nine years ago) link
haha since the Joyce Manor was news to no one but me, is everyone also enjoying the new RVIVR track as much as I am? been playing it on a loop, from a new EP coming in about two weeks:

so the new RVIVR ep is here and goddamn is it good

I like how the first track seems to end in a natural place and you're thinking ok that was a really good song but then it's like syke we're not done here and whacks you in the side of the head with a massive group singalong coda

this doesn't quite fit this thread (it's more power-pop than pop-punk) but i think it's totally brilliant

I last saw them play at Bowery Ballroom with Ted Leo and Cave In. Must have been 1999? Totally all over the place bill that worked really well.

as a person who'll always have a place in my music heart for brand new, MCR, thursday, jimmy eat world, some fall out boy back in the day & also got into the genre roots stuff like jawbox, rites of spring, texas is the reason, etc. etc...i find it odd that i can't really latch onto much of the "emo revival" stuff. just doesn't do it for me - like i dont like TWIABP or balance & composure or the hotelier or into it. over it. that much. also the frontperson of TWIABP threw shade at MCR in an interview, so i obvs have a vendetta against him for LIFE
exceptions have been dads & joyce manor - those are all good. recommendations for stuff in that vein worth checking out?
― search datpiff, you'll find it (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link
sounds like you were not necessarily into the midwestern brand of emo that a lot of this revival "twinkle" stuff traces back to
― anonanon, Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link
have you tried Dikembe? I liked some stuff from their new album this year
maybe also Crash of Rhinos
― anonanon, Thursday, 20 November 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link
have not heard of either, will try.
i mean i've tried braid and mineral and promise ring & liked bits and pieces from either but i guess it didn't stick, although jimmy eat world comes from that scene to some extent and i like them. and for all the "mainstream/breakthrough" emo bands i listed, i also was either bored by or truly disliked saves the day, senses fail, most taking back sunday, dashboard confessional and whatnot.

man that hotelier record is still prob my top "emo revival" release of the year, idk the melodies just grow so naturally out of each other and are so powerful. joyce manor is also the best
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link
if you have a lot of love for jimmy eat world you might like the driver friendly record that came out this year or all of their records really
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDgG6T4IpI
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link
i'm also a big fan of the jazz june record that came out this year but it's them doing really straightforward pop-rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_lufZKvJtM
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:04 (nine years ago) link
imo a bunch of the emo revival bands just aren't that interesting, including TWIABP, Into It, Modern Baseball, etc. You Blew It's OK.
But The Hotelier and Joyce Manor are both *awesome* ... or at least their 2014 records are.
xpost i dig that Driver Friendly record, too
― alpine static, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link
between last year's rolling emo thread and this one i've developed a real loathing for the world is
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link
i think the hotelier have great instrumentation, his voice is jussssttttttttt beyond the threshold of reediness/whininess for me though, idk. i know, i know, its not a thing to complain about in this genre/subgenre/movement/thing, but i find it hard to take sometimes. i will give it another go-round.
will check out this driver friendly band, appreciate all the tips. (also this is one of the better thread names i've encountered)
― search datpiff, you'll find it (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:09 (nine years ago) link
yeah i dont get the TWIABP hype at all it's half-assed explosions in the sky with choruses and inscrutable-ass lyrics, does sound pretty tho
modern baseball i thought was aight
― search datpiff, you'll find it (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link
TWIABP released an album or EP or something this year that appeared to be largely spoken word and it was pretty cringeworthy based on the couple of minutes I could stand to listen to it
― anonanon, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link
What band rn is doing the closest thing to Coheed and Cambria
― 龜, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link
Is there really a band called modern baseball & are they just copying American Football
coheed sucks and yes there is and no they are not because american football is fucking boring.
― search datpiff, you'll find it (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link
in keeping secrets + second stage turbine do not suck
― Mordy, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link
coheed does NOT suck but i can't think of a band like them out there right now
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link
also imo the afterman records were a real return to form for coheed
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link
also, it's kind of all over this thread already, but RVIVR is amazing
― anonanon, Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link
sucks is a strong word. my bad. just not my thing, mostly because of prob the most unlistenable voice aside from that simple plan dude. but yea, to their credit what they did was pretty original at the time, sonically.
― search datpiff, you'll find it (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 20 November 2014 21:25 (nine years ago) link
Hotelier guy's voice is certainly on the line of too reedy/whiny, but I dunno ... it works for me. I guess he stays just on the right side of the line.
But the real draw on HOME LIKE NOPLACE IS THERE, for me, are the guitars. they just feel so ... i dunno, for lack of a better word: epic. i should explain that better, but am swamped right now ... but as just one example, the way the main guitar riff comes to life at :43 of "Among the Wildflowers" (and just the beautiful melodic arc of that little riff in general) is some life-affirming shit, man.
― alpine static, Friday, 21 November 2014 00:22 (nine years ago) link
kinda got into the recent coheed album, not all of it but some of it worked well.
― no but seriously im not a dick like that (Spottie), Friday, 21 November 2014 06:04 (nine years ago) link
Joyce Manor's s/t debut is a bit of a modern classic imo, their 2nd one is good too but it's absurdly skimpy even by their standards
― Simon H., Friday, 21 November 2014 06:13 (nine years ago) link
closer to thrice than coheed but i guess one of my answers to the question upthread is "circa survive," whose new record is excellent and streaming on youtube http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH22-xSMERQqUX3ogTqRNTqgzOZbdoxeW
